The accuracy people speak of is accuracy at range, because the AR has much better accuracy after 300 yards.

That last part of the article is awesome.

He said he was proud of his bronze bust installed in his native village of Kurya in the Siberian region of Altai. He said newlyweds bring flowers to the bust. "They whisper 'Uncle Misha, wish us happiness and healthy kids,'" he said. "What other gun designer can boast of that?"

About how many pounds of heroin would I need to trade to get 1000 of these from an Afghan warlord?

Which is why we have these wonderful things called "accessories". A stock AR isn't anything to write home about either.

AK mechanical accuracy is on par with an AR assuming you buy a quality one.

I've spoken at length about the AKs with a very experienced user (Spetsnaz Commando who killed many many people with the AK in Чече́нская Респу́блик&#1072.

The AKs vary by a massive degree depending on who made them, when they were made, and who they were made for. The best of the AKs are as good as the best of the contemporary US ARs. The worst ones, well .. they're even worse than the worst Colt-made M16s.

he created weapons to help people keep murderers away from taking away their lands.

Kept the lands out of the hands of imperial powers and in the hands of oppressive domestic regimes. The only people who really got hurt by the AK-47 are ordinary civilians.

I wonder what it would feel like to be "credited' with designing the weapon responsible for more deaths than just about any other weapon including the atom bomb?

And one that continues to be used to take lives every day, and will continue on for decades after his death. Not to insult the man or the weapon, but thats a heavy burden to take to the grave.

A weapon is an inanimate object. It can't be responsible for death.

Or maybe we should credit the first caveman who sharpened a stick into a fine point?

Must be terrible knowing all those folks that liberated themselves with your tool, or kept themselves free of oppressors with it.

Regardless of the right or wrong of guns and how they're used, this was a man that changed the world.

As he repeatably stated, he didn't design the weapon for that purpose and slept fine at night. It wasn't his fault if people misused his weapon and he knew it. I expect he died rather peacefully in this regard, as any adult that isn't full of him/herself should. People are only human.

Besides, it's not like the people in question wouldn't be killing each other had he not invented the AK-47. The Soviet government were the ones that sponsored national liberation movements and licensed the AK to other countries, just like they did with the SKS before the AK-47.

Do you think Henry Ford went to the grave burdened by the thought of drunk drivers? In Somalia in the 1990s the Somali militias would seize food aid and keep it for themselves, leaving others to starve. You think the farmers were burdened about growing grain when they heard it was stolen by bad guys?

Pretty much. It's not like those people don't just use machetes, rocks, whatever is available to kill if they don't have rifles or pistols to work with.
