Read it. Apparently they had a window of opportunity but did not get there in time with the adequate resources. The are sending robots now to see what it's like down there. Although its a sentence or two, nobody wants to take blame for this.

I know it's an accident, and I feel terrible for their friends and family, but I don't feel like these companies properly set up survivable working conditions in case something happened. When these companies fail to devise a plan to save its employees almost immediately, the government should step in to save its citizens. Especially ones that work for a living and have families to provide for.

Instead of a SINGLE ventilation hole, and a SINGLE entrance, double or triple up on everything. Make multiple routes to escape and get out in case a collapse or an explosion happens. This doesn't make sense to not do this at all. I'm no engineer, but workplace safety and mining at its current state have nothing in common. As far as I can tell, mining has been doing everything almost identical to what was done 100 years prior, sans breathing apparatuses.

No trolling here. Things like this COULD be prevented.

WTF are you talking about? There was never an opportunity to go in - at no point during the whole operation were methane levels at a safe level - demonstrated saliently by the second explosion.

As for building your mine that has multiple entrances, ducting etc - that's obviously going to be completely uneconomical. Workplace safety is taken extremely seriously in this country, but there's only so much you can economically and realistically do in an inherently unsafe environment. There's a reason miners make a lot of money - they're undertaking an unsafe job.

Your idiotic, ridiculous and unwarranted criticism is tantamount to me criticising the US government for not doing enough to keep US soldiers overseas safe - it's a dangerous environment by nature, and there things unfortunately do happen. There will be a commission of enquiry, and undoubtedly we will learn that there were non-best practice operations and procedures in place, but how you can pin this accident on the NZ government is beyond comprehension.

Climb back into your hole you fucking troll - this is a thread started for the purpose of expressing condolences, not your soap box.

To the first part, like hell they can't do those things. If they cant keep their workers safe and make profit, they shouldn't be in that business. In every unsafe situation there is a feasible and possible way to make something much safer. Maybe drill 2 foot wide mine holes every 1/2 mile of tunnel. I've seen these machines do testing of 12 inch wide holes going incredibly deep in the ground to test soil, the same (or quite similar) equipment can be used in mining. Each hole only took 1 hour to make btw.

Sure a 300k (US $) machine like that (the one I saw was only 75K) cuts into expenses, but it costs over 190K just to hire 40 people to work in a month for 55K a year. I'm sure liability insurance and what not is through the roof in this field. And losing an entire crew costs a hell of a lot more than 300K.

It's not only on the companies job to keep things safe, but on the countries as well. I do not condone the unsafe working environment of miners. The reason I would place some blame on NZ is by not taking better precautions to prevent such disasters like this. Just look at Chile, they got everyone from every country possible to help with their efforts of trapped miners. In this case? None?

I know Americans like their government and judiciary to baby them and treat them like children, but in the rest of the world we act like adults - we accept that in some vocations there's an inherent risk which can only be realistically mitigated to a certain extent. Some people are willing, with appropriate compensation, to engage in these risky activities. Remember that NZ is a rich country, not in the third world. There's no exploitation here - these miners are well paid for what they do.

Anyway, fuck off and post your bullshit in P&N you acrimonious piece of shit.
