Then again you might be making fun of the fact that the aiel were stolen from Dune...lol.
He did borrow a number of ideas.

Huh, I confused the Aiel with the Fremen? How is that possible? They're completely different! I mean, the Fremen...um, uh, they uh, live on a totally different planet! Sorry, won't happen again. Let me try again.

And we Aes Sedai are holier than thou manipulative witches with superpowers who fear that a male will arise with the same powers as ours and that we won't be able to control him, we advise queens and kings, we call our leader "Mother", and one day the Kwisatz Haderach will see into that place which only he can look....damnit I did it again!

But, like everyone else in this bass ackwards world of ours, when he does return we'll ignore him and call him a fraud and let ourselves be duped into following some big-boobed chick (which one, they're everywhere) with lots of rings into war with the wetlanders. No proof will be enough, because unlike everyone else, WE know what we're doing.

edit: jonk, I figured that was it, but why has this NEVER been addressed? And if the taint is gone shouldn't LTT be sane again and be able to have a decent albiet weird dialog with Rand? Maybe they could actually work together and Rand could do something competent on purpose for once rather than flailing around with inestimable power that somehow magically does the right thing despite his impressive ignorance.

My guess is that since LTT and the 100 Companions were driven insane by the DO's backlash, but in the prologue to the first book, Ishy heals LTT so that he can see what he did (who he killed, i.e. everyone) while he was insane, and then he called power till he self-immolated. LTT is now reborn in Rand's head and isn't insane b/c of the taint/backlash, but because he's guilt ridden re: the murders of everyone he knew and loved.

Or I don't know. Both are acceptable answers.

Some favorites are:

- a backwoods young man takes on the enormous responsibility of saving the world from insidious evil and fulfills his destiny thousands of years after the first prophet/sorcerer/whatever knew he would come

- a sisterhood of magic-practicing women with a penchant for trying to control men, especially men that can also do magic

- a stark lack of male magic-users

- a history rich with magic powers beyond imagination that ultimately led to world-wide destruction and a need to rebuild

- an imprisoned evil being pulling some strings in the land of the living in an attempt to break free of the chains placed upon it by the "good" ultimate being before the dawn of time/

(I did actually enjoy the SoT series, at least stuff happened)

Dont forget: a string of prophecies that must be fulfilled, yet every effort to interpret/prevent/bring about only results in the prophecies meaning something other than what was originally thought!

I hope you sensed the sarcasm.
At least he brought some perverts into his book.
Nass, Denna, Rahl etc..etc..
And more rape than you can swing a stick at.
Rand still doesn't understand girls and I doubt he knows what a vagina looks like lol.

No worries, my sarcasm meter is finely-tuned. I didn't figure you would have a reason to bring it up otherwise. Other than Dumai Wells, Goodkind was better at describing horrendous gore.

Yes.
I'm talking more about Jordan's writing that Rand.
But I guess it's not really a smutty romance novel...lol.

In short, books 1-3 are great.
There are some huge things that happen in a few of the books afterwards, but you have to brave the rest of the books to get to them.
When the next book comes out, I am going to re-read 1-4 probably, then go to Wikipedia and read the summaries, to refresh myself.

Good idea... Read 1-4 then wiki-read the rest up to the last one he wrote... It picked back up there. Lots of things were tied up.

Even better: Chapter Summaries!

Those were very useful when I was re-reading the series. I've read every word of every book thus far, but only once. the 2nd time through I just couldn't stomach some of the later ones and instead read the summaries. Even those are painfully long and dull sometimes!

Who?

yeah, i read all the way down to your post and have idea who it is or what a "WOT" is

He's a semi-famous author. WoT is Wheel of Time, the name of his most famous series. Had it lived up to the expectations set in the first 2-3 books it probably would have become the single finest fantasy series in history. Many/most are disappointed with the later works in the series, but it remains an icon of the genre.

IF it would have ended at book 5-7 it would be one of the best series around. Instead he chose to milk it and drag it out.

the last 6 books could be condensed into 2 good books.
Fixed, or even 1 book if it was around 1200 pages.

Finish yet?

I'm finishing Goodkind bk 11. It's as bad as the last 5 of course. At least it's almost over.

Actually yes, I did finish. I read it very casually. It was his first book, and actually I enjoyed it quite a bit. His style is very different from Jordan, so it will be interesting to see how he does with the rest of the WoT series. I will be reading Sanderson's own series Mistborn (or whatever it's called) soon I think. Stuff actually happened in "Elantris", it was nice.

Update: Memory of Light will be split into 3 books.

Press release: http://www.dragonmount.com/News/?p=483

Brandon Sanderson's Blog posting: http://www.brandonsanderson.co...icle/56/Splitting-AMOL

I feel very little antipathy toward Mr. Sanderson, unlike the ill will I harbor George Martin. Martin screws around and does anything but work on the series, which has been entirely under his own control. Sanderson basically was handed a shit sandwich, 11 completed novels, and told to write a final volume, and oh, here's some notes. He's been working nonstop and the problem he has isn't that he can't write, it's that he's written so much they don't know what to do. Now that's a problem worth having.

I haven't read anything by BS so I have no idea if it's going to suck or not, but I appreciate the effort he's put into this and I suspect many will feel the same. If RJ had lived I find it unlikely he'd have been able to finish it up in one volume either, he'd have mea culpa'd and just released as many as he needed. His one final volume promise aside, you just can't mass-publish a 1500 page book these days.

I went to B&N to pick up the Malazan series by Erickson (which is completely awesome), and they actually had a tag under the books that basically said "if you're pissed off at Martin, read this!"
