I enjoyed getting to know Russ on the forums, and when I moved to Washington in 2003 I stopped by his shop several times. I don't think I've ever been in a room more wreathed in cigarette smoke, and it always mixed with the smell of stale coffee. I think Russ was bemused that a gal in her late teens was intruiged enough by his online shenanigans to just show up to visit; he was pretty tolerant of me dropping by.

I've missed his personality on the forums ever since he stopped posting, and I'm sad to hear of his departure. To me he was the original online curmudgeon, acerbic and quick-witted, ready with a smartass or kind remark depending on which you had earned.

They don't make 'em like Russ anymore. And that's a damn shame.

So it still exists eh?! hahaha

But I don't want to sidetrack this thread. Russ sounds like an incredible human being and I wish I had had the chance to really know him. I'm sure there may have been some brief back and forth with him on the forums but of an impersonal nature. I joined relatively late, in 2005, so I was on the edge of the beginning of the decline of what was the ATF of old, and it was a great time but clearly I missed the best years and some great personalities. They always come and go, but that should only be in visitation and membership status, not in this way.

He wrote the extremely popular Celery Report, documenting his experience with different Intel Celeron 300A CPUs (back in the day where you could overclock to 450MHz). So while he never went out of his way to call attention to himself, his impact on AnandTech was quite great even in the earliest days.
