Apparently they're also experimenting with blocking ad blockers. If they are successful that will pretty much destroy them. Youtube and most of the internet is unusable without an ad blocker. Running a site like Youtube is not cheap though because of the amount of processing power and bandwidth needed so maybe shedding users is actually what they're going for.

LOL, "it's costing too much to run our service, let's make ads unblockable to see if we can get some users to leave and make it cheaper!"
Same guy who figured you could run Twitter out of a single server room.

Youtube premium is one of the great things about modern technology. Some of the best money I spend, as I watch more youtube than any other media by far.

I mean, you're not wrong. It's my main source of entertainment too. I guess if they get rid of ad blockers I'll likely pay for premium.

Doesn't do a whole lot IME .... I've played with these settings extensively. (much like the "door-close" button on passenger elevators it's there to keep you busy)

I regularly see videos I've marked "not interested" and channels I've marked "don't recommend" show up on my feed. (and then stubbornly hang around!)

Wouldn't mind adding a similar "feature" to P&N though!

The Algorithm knows you didn't mean it.

I always forget that's an option. I might grudgingly pay it if they do in fact stop ad blockers. At least it's reasonable, looks like it's $119/year so about $135 total with taxes, which is only a tad more than what cable is per month. Considering I don't have cable TV or any streaming services, it would not be that big of a waste. Honestly I think the ad model is something that is going to die out because it's either you let people use ad blockers and nobody sees the ads, or you piss off people and they leave. Internet ads are basically malware now days. So sites need to start thinking about ways to support their services and just charging for it directly is not really that far fetched. I'm not really against paying for certain internet based services as long as they don't price gouge or keep upping the price every few years.

I also have YT premimum and I like it. Mostly for the ad free viewing on my smartphone. I use an ad block on my laptop.

Why don't you block ads on your phone? Aside from billboards and snailmail spam, my life is pretty much ad free.

Blocking ads on your phone when using YouTube can be a pain. Can it even be done? I use the app btw.

I think you could do it through DNS such as setting up a pie hole. I'd like to play with that at some point but I don't really go on Youtube or much sites on my phone, 99.5% is on PC so it's kind of low on my priority list.

Maybe not with the app. I disable all the stock apps, and pretty much anything that duplicates the function of a web browser, with the exception of redreader for reddit for the next month anyway. Firefox + ublock origin will block ads, and/or you can use a program that creates a local vpn to blackhole ad requests. I use dns66. AFAIK, you can only have one vpn running, so that may not be a good option if you use a real vpn.

I pay for it because my wife and I use it on the tv apps. Plus I don't mind paying for something I use that much.

I very, very rarely watch videos on my phone, I'd just as soon wait until I have a better viewing experience available versus watching it on such a small screen.

Yeah, there are a number of ways to do it, based on what I've seen people talk about.

Works a lot better on Windows then Android IME especially if you use Chrome as the "default" browser on your phone.

Firefox in particular allows much more "granular" control of browser "plugins" although video playback quality may suffer somewhat.

Nah it's just shit like clicking on a daily wire video or a shapiro link or something like that and then the crazy shit starts to appear in suggestions....
I guess I see shit in my suggestions but I don't hit it and it eventually goes away. I don't have a sense that the suggestion draw is going to hell. Well, it's sometimes better than others. But I don't make a habit of going down Youtube rabbit holes. It's an occasional indulgence. Real easy to fall through the cracks at Youtube. Lots of times I click on nothing... For a while I subscribed to very little. Subscribing is presumably a way to refine your youtube experience. How well it actually works, I'm not sure all in all. They obviously offer you stuff you haven't subscribed to. Some of that I HAVE really liked.

I was like that but with age, I'm finding it harder and harder to stay upright in front of a screen at the end of the day, leading me to pick up my mobile and watch a few nice vids before I doze off.

I'm older than you are (but probably in better shape, and I place an emphasis on staying well-rested )
I close out my evenings with reading before I go to bed.

This happened to me. I clicked on a single jordan peterson link not knowing what it was and all of a sudden a ton of crazy shit showed up. took me a long time for all those suggestions to stop showing up and even then they still pop up once in a while

Yeah, if something seems off, don't go for it. I'm sure I get bunches of weird suggestions I wouldn't like, some that I'd hate even. I don't hang out at YT. I just go sometimes. I like it in these forums a lot more (very interactive), but the functionality here is very limited, of course. One of the best features here is that you can link most anything. I also love that the moderators really like it here and many if not most are fellow posters, they aren't standoffish.
