If I had a nickel for every time Youtube died....

It died when they took away home page customization back in 2011. You could truly make it your own. It was a lot of fun. Instead they made it TV and mobile device centric and the only thing you could customize was a thin strip which in itself was limited to 1/3 of the actual image.

It died when they took away wild card searches in 2011. You could find ALL newly uploaded videos w/o a topic just by searching for "*", now its not allowed. Plus results are filtered, its not raw like it used to be back in the good old days. Its watered down to the point of being just water, not the wild open west in its glory days.

It died when they starting filtering comments starting about 2015. You could say whatever you liked before then.

It died when that filtering turned to censoring if you said anything the algorithms would not allow you to say staring in 2019.

It died when you could comment on virtually any YT video at all, now you cannot on about 40% of them. Not sure when that started but it was probably around 2018.

It died when YT was forced to bow to anyone who claimed to own content over the billions of YT videos starting around 2012 when algorithms automatically placed copyright claims on your videos not based on actual use of a movie or song in your video, but when some element accidentally triggered it because it was similar to protected content.

And worst of all, It continues to die when video content itself is censored. Political ideas. Violent words or imagery, including descriptions or depictions of historical events such as WWII, human bodily functions for medical videos, anything that could be deemed "shocking" or "offensive" to anyone or anything. I love watching history videos and it extremely annoying to have to hear basic, non vulgar words censored because the algorithms automatically flag it for violations or demonetize it so the content creator cannot upload the damn thing or make money. Oh, and if you disagree with the left, your video pretty much cannot be uploaded because of political censorship.

An honorable mention death .... only people who upload videos for a living (professionals) have their content as suggested on the right hand side. A long time ago, ALL videos that were related where suggested. So an average nobody could become somebody...and quickly..by making good videos. Now you have to have thousands or millions of subscribers to be suggested.

And guess what, it will die again and again.

I dont "hang" out at YT either, but i'm often listening to stuff in my vehicle, from car reviews to DIY for miscellaneous stuff. Much easier to listen than to read forums while driving, lol.
My car doesn't support that. I assume it's part of your car's functionality. I don't know how I could do that. I do have means to send output from portable devices to my car stereo (i.e. not be illegal, I assume earbuds in both ears is not legal), but rarely set that up. I never do audiobooks either. Almost never listen to podcasts. I listen to tons of music.

Uh, I don't drive much. <1000 miles/year. During the pandemic, 400 m/yr tops. That could change... drastically, if I start checking out state and national parks, and etc.

If your precious little ego can't handle it, by all means, censor away.

I am impressed that you managed to do a screenshot (lol). Can you do that again? I will give you double plus fairy points if you can! Stupid troll fail. Try harder next time, or better yet, get a life?

I used to like chrome when it first came out, but now I am all firefox. And I get annoyed when sites want me to open them on the app on the phone. That is dumb. I just want to browse, not install a bunch of apps for every site.

As for youtube, I don't like how they are always trying to suggest videos and do auto play, but then I don't watch youtube that often. I do have my own channel though, with a few game play videos. Yes there is Doom.
The YouTube Unhook extension is good for wiping away suggestions, and if you're signed in, it should remember your autoplay setting.

This is 100% verifiable bullshit
If you watch one single video from one of the right-wing bobbleheads, you'll get tons of suggestions for other videos "the left" disagrees with.

Totally missed the point. If you watch a video from an uploader chances are very high the suggested videos on the right will all be from people with thousands or millions of subs.

It is very unlikely If you create a new channel and upload content it will be suggested until you start getting likes, subs and views. Nobody will find you unless they search for you. It did not used to like that. You would get a fair mix of new comers and big channels.

You could not pay me to watch a Mr Beast video or what ever else nonsense. If you have a Moran whose every video has a thumnail of them with a mouth open, eyes wide and look of surprise to get your attention...that's a crap video.

Also the algos pre censor your vids for vulgarity, offensive images, strong opposition to something using strong language, etc, and either automatically flag it now and issue an account strike or keep the video from being monetized.

I know, I tried recently after not uploading for years because of the wasteland of big names only YT has become.

Try uploading and innocuous video but push the envelope with the title. Say you hate something like "Fuck Republicans". Automatically flagged and account strike issued. Or upload a video with that content but innocuous title. Auto take down.

You said something that was entirely untrue, so I didn't miss the point I was refuting.

The only way youtube will die is if a viable alternative can take its place. I suspect the major issues with youtube will be present in any serious alternative.

So it’s not so much disagreeing with the left, as it is being violent and vulgar that seems to be the problem

Clearly a video is not worth watching unless they have their mouths and eyes widen open in surprise.

Some guy made a left hand turn without signaling on an empty two lane road? Surprise face!

Some woman forget to mark Yes on "Tax Basis Not Reported by Broker" on Form 8949, Page 2 on her tax return? Surprise face!

Hardly used youtube at all pre-pandemic/lockdown, but then discovered that there's actually a lot of good quality videos on there. Previously I only associated it with music videos and people pushing political agendas I had no interest in.

e.g. I think I started with Mark Felton's short docs on military history, and then the Bovington tank museum channel which, during the lockdown, taught me more than I realised I ever wanted to know about tanks, Pilot Mentour likewise with aviation disasters, then several equally-good channels on maritime disasters (though I learned to stay away from anything to do with the Titanic - it's weird how there seems to be a whole community of Titanic obsessives who dispute each other's probably highly contentious theories, sometimes with a surprising degree of vitriol - I can't say I really care that much about the details of that event)

There are some really _bad_ videos on there, though, not just the political conspiracy nuts (which are easy to spot) but supposedly-factual ones where people just drone on in the most verbose and boring fashion imaginable, stretching less than a minute's worth of content into 15 minutes (presumably because of how the monetisation works?)

Noticed something different yesterday, a video I was watching had the standard resolution options, but in addition to 1080P, there was an option for "1080P Premium" that you have to be a subscriber for. The 4K videos I watched were still in 4K, but this may not bode well for the future.

It's there for me and I have Premium but I haven't played much with it yet. (I was paying for "music" anyway so it made sense)

A close to 30 year old woman who does guitar videos keeps having her videos restricted (comments turned off, recommendations limited) because youtube feels her videos are about a small child.

No human at youtube can convince the AI she is not a minor

I have very passionate opinions about the state of Youtube today. I loved old YT back when, because it was a fun alternative to TV, with people essentially just shitposting memes and the incredible flame wars that were happening when you had a "click button to create video reply" option. That was fun. That was really worth watching, in a trainwreck-y kinda way.

As far as modern youtube having a ton of educational content, such as quality film reviewers, history and science channels, etc all that is great, but it doesn't really need to be on youtube. If anything, those Nebula websites should have been ad-revenue based and used that as a YT-alternative platform.

What is absolutely hate, is "content creators" that came to youtube specifically for the money. Because .. that's TV. The very moment someone starts to say "oh but we have to consider our staffing budget", or "the monetization is making us do this one way instead of the other" then to me they can all get fucked.

I had my first falling out with Totalbiscuit AKA The Cynical Brit. Aside from the fact that he decided he was entitled to TWO nicknames, what really irked me was that the guy constantly referred to himself as "a professional videogame reviewer". Never mind that his videos were shit, if you haven't got a boss, an organization you answer to, someone to actually CHECK that what you are saying is not bullshit, you have zero credibility. He's as much a professional reviewer as i am a lawyer.

At least TV has *some* sort of regulatory body, although maybe in the US they aren't really that effective, so you might not notice. Look at Cinema Sins, their videos are shit, literally filled to the brim with nonsense and lies, but there's nobody to say "you can't put this shit on the air (and get paid for it) because it's not true".
The VAST majority of youtube creators are entertaines, there for money and money alone, and when they come cry to their audience because bad wolf youtube took they moneys away i say who the fuck cares, your problem funnyman, you want to make millions on a high-risk investment, we don't and shouldn't care because you are a brand, not a human being.

A few creators are still in it for the passion, but it's few and far in between.

TLDR Youtube was good when people made videos "for art". Now they make videos for cash and for that they could die in front of me and i wouldn't care.
