Jeez, 12 hours? wtf are you using?
DVD2SVCD takes a little longer, because it defaults to very high quality. 4-pass VBR on MPEG2, auto gain adjust on audio, etc. End result is 480x480 MPEG-2, undistinguishable from DVD. Which I cannot say for DivX.

I have a question for you pros out there. I am having problems getting my Divx backups of DVD's to fit on 2 CD's. Some want to fit on more than two CDs. I have used a bit rate calculator but it is inaccurate. How do I know what video bit rate to encode at to get a Divx to be under 1400 MBs so it will fit on 2 CD's most?

Do a search for DVDx... it is by far the best ripper I have ever seen or used. One program that will rip to VCD, SVCD or DIVX. On my home system, I can rip a 2hour DVD to 720x480 in about 1hr 45minutes... this is on a p4 3ghz with 1gb pc2700 ddr. A couple of clicks and you'll be ripping in no time.

Just an FYI... on my 1.3ghz Duron with 512mb, I can rip a 2hr movie in a little over 3hrs.

Here is a download Link.

Interesting - When I used it, I found the output quality to be fairly mediocre - No offense. I get much better results with Gordian Knot.

I couldn't figure out how to download it from the link. You are given the choice eventually to download at high speed or slow speed but you are then asked to login. It's all in German, too.

You only have to log in if you want the fast download. Pick the slow, it's about 30kbps.

I've personally ripped quite a few movies with DVD2SVCD, and I love it. I can, however, tell a very small difference between the two when used at max resolution on my monitor. When you make it in windowed mode, it's much harder to tell the difference. I still prefer SVCD over DivX anyday, though.

.. Watching my Black Hawk Down DVD Rip right now.. looks almost as good as the DVD and sound is incredible

Do you use CC or TMPGEnc?

I've tried both. For this rip it was CC - but I have tested TMPGEnc and it looked about the same. It's compressed, so you can't expect the exact same quality..

4-pass VBR and everything?

Well, I guess my TV is much more forgiveable than the monitors. I can't notice a single artifact. In fact, more actual DVD's have odd artifacts like noticeable gray level discretization, or blockiness than SVCD's that come out of DVD2SVCD.

I set it to whatever the doom9.org guide said to use. There's some blocks (pixelation) usually located around the edge of objects, especially humans, farther away. They're visible about 25-50% of the time (more so when the window is maxed).

I just bought a bunch of DVDs and will be getting into ripping from rentals. I figured I should buy a dedicated DVD player so I could watch on my TV/Monitor (S-Video), but now I figure it's not worth it. If I watch wide screen on my 20" TV it won't look anywhere near as good as on my 17" computer monitor, if for no other reason than that the subtented angle (is that the term?) is MUCH greater for my computer monitor. Aside from that, the monitor is phenomenally sharper than my NTSC TV! Until I get an HDTV (and progressive scan DVD player), I'll forgo watching movies except with my computer. Sorry if this seems OT, but I had to interject this.

If you have a DVD-R drive and a non-copyrighted DVD , the best way is to rip the title that you want (eg using smartripper) and then burn it back using a DVD authoring software that came with your DVD-R.

I'm downloading it now. I'm a little concerned about this though. It doesn't include my OS (Windows 2000 Pro):

Win 98
Win Me
Win 95
Win XP

4.7 MB

Does it work on Win2000 OK? The filename is DVDx_2_0.zip

I don't know much about DVDx. I use DVD2SVCD, I find it does everything I need. And then some.

It didn't on m W2K machine. Kept errorring out and stuff.. :|
Bummer. I guess that nixes THAT one. Guess I'll be checking out Gordian Knot or DVD2SVCD. DVD2SVCD looks well documented, in any case. DVDx kind of scares me, with the site being in German and all. I had 4 years of German in college, but a long time ago! Mein Deutsch ist nicht sehr gut, Heutzutage.

I didn't write the program No offense taken. What are you using SVCD/VCD or Divx? I exclusively rip to Divx and quality is largely dependant on resolution/bitrate.
