If you have a DVD-R drive and a non-copyrighted DVD , the best way is to rip the title that you want (eg using smartripper) and then burn it back using a DVD authoring software that came with your DVD-R.

So would DVD authoring software create exact copies of the disks - all of the menus, extra footage, subtitles, etc.? Would the copy "behave" the same as the original? I've played around with all of the various encoders, and it really seems to be more trouble than it's worth. I'm at the point where I am ready to buy a DVD burner and save myself the time/effort. If the copies perform identically, then my only question really is what format (DVD-R, DVD+R) is supported on most DVD players, specifically my PS2?

I am by no means a newbie with PC's (even if I say it myself) however, I got into this DVD "ripping" thing with the intention of making a few SVCD's to play on my laptop when on the move etc.

The amount of time I have wasted attempting to get a VCD or SVCD burned has far outweighed the "convenience" of actually purchasing a duplicate copy of the movie.

I am disappointed with this - because everything else I've ever done on a PC was so easy - building, troubleshooting, overclocking etc etc.

I can always "rip" the movie but it all goes horribly wrong when it comes to transferring the "rip" to a CDR.

So far I have made a grand total of ZERO VCD's or SVCD's

I'll check out some of the other links listed here - I have no idea why I keep getting errors etc and failures - it is all supposed to be very easy with all these programs

No, not likely. Chances are the whole DVD would be too big to fit on a DVD-R.

You will be able to fit just the movie onto one DVD-R without re-encoding, though. For most DVD's that is.

It's actually cheaper to rip the movie and store it on the laptop's HD. With the hard drive prices as they are, that'll be $3 per movie. Cheaper than the cost of DVD-R blanks. And the ripping process is pretty straightforward.

I agree the "ripping" part is very easy indeed - no complaints there for sure

Daemon Tools is very good for viewing the image too

I'm doing all the ripping at home on my desktop though - my laptop (company one) only has a 10GB HD - so transferring to CD's is the ideal scenario.

I just cannot get a disk to burn yet

How many GB would that $3 translate to? Are you thinking the movie only or an entire DVD's worth of material including trailers, interviews, special features, etc.? If you rip to HD, will you have the same features as you do with a DVD, in a "seamless" way?

I was thinking "movie only", with the English 2.0 stream only. In my experience, that's 3GB at 1$/GB

And yes, there is a way to make a complete copy of the DVD with most rippers. In smartripper it's called "make a complete backup" I believe

I assume a "complete backup" would be ~twice as big?

It varies, but 2x would be a reasonable estimate, I guess. I have never tried it.

If I were to rip movies, I would get the bare minimum. I would even cut the last chapter if it's just the credits. If I were to ever rip movies. Not that I ever do, of course

So you guys who have converted a DVD image/rip to CD-R (VCD/SVCD) what do u suggest for somebody who seems to fail all the time at doing this then?

DVD2SVCD

Seriously, can't get any easier. Install it, then install CC 2.5, use default settings, and voila!

Takes about 3x the time on my XP1600+. Pretty much overnight.

CC = CinemaCraft, the preferred encoder for DVD2SVCD.

There is a link to v 2.50 right where you download DVD2SVCD here

I've had Smartripper at least since May but just ripped my first DVD. What do I do with the files? When I double click any of the files I get the Windows 2000 Open With... dialog. The extensions are:

.VOB
.IFO
.BUP

Do I run these from Smartripper itself? I'm using version 2.41, which appears to be the latest (?). I've been using PowerDVD. I don't see a way in the PDVD interface to use other than my CD-RW burner or DVD playing drives. I have MSI-DVD that came with my MSI motherboard (different system), but haven't used it.

You can watch the vob's with a dvd player. I have done it with PowerDVD.

If you want to convert the content to VCD, there's a whole slew of steps: frameserving, audio extraction, normalization, encoding, video encoding, deinterlacing, pulldown, subtitle processing, splitting, etc.

I get lost immediately, so I just plug the ifo file into DVD2SVCD and walk away for 6 hours. When I come back, I see the 2 or 3 CD images that I burn with Nero and that's it.

That sounds really cool. I have the latest version of Nero, too. I downloaded DVD2SVCD the other day and I guess I'll start messing with it. Meantime, I just ripped a DVD I borrowed today from the library, and what I see in the directory I ripped to looks like what's on the DVD. It's 4 GB, and I did Backup with Smartripper, not Movie, so I guess it's the full DVD content. How do I get PowerDVD to play it? In the configuration it just points to L: (my Liteon burner drive) or P: (my Pioneer DVD player). I have a utility I've never used that lets you assign a drive letter to a directory, and I suppose I could use that. I doubt that's necessary though. Right?

Edit: Oops. I think the problem is that I have PowerDVD 3.0 here.... Maybe it's plan B: Assign that directory its own drive letter.

You have to change to "file mode" in PowerDVD. I have 3.0 and it works fine. The buttons are a little small, so you have to hunt around for the "file mode" button.

Yep. I finally found it. I passed the cursor over a "button" and it said Disk Mode. Click --> File Mode. I'm on my way. Thanks.

Well I went round in circles again last nite trying to make an SVCD

Ripping is easy - no problem at all on that part - viewing the rip is easy too if you use Daemon Tools which creates a virtual DVD drive of your ripped image. Then choose PowerDVD etc to play.

I have DVD2SVCD, DVDx, DVD Decryptor, Daemon Tools, VCD Easy, and a couple of others too which I can't remember.

I watched my first rip last night with PowerDVD 3.0 and didn't have to make a virtual drive. Just to the left (at about 8:30) of the wheel is a round button and when you pass the cursor over it, it will say "Disk Mode". Click and you change to file mode and you can point PDVD to your rip directory. I highly recommend that everybody stay away from the 1955 version of Night of the Hunter! I will NEVER EVER watch it again (DELETED!).

Question: The rip, although I made a complete rip with Smartripper 2.41 (the Backup button), didn't act exactly like the disk itself. I didn't see the Menu screen and the movie just fired up. The video was beautiful, though. Is there a trick to get your complete rip to give you all the features on a disk?

Is there any difference between ripping a movie DVD (say with Smartripper) and simply copying the contents to your HD, assuming you do a total rip (not just the movie)? I did a total rip ("Backup") of a DVD, but it didn't run like the disk.

The good thing about Daemon is that when you browse to "My Computer" your ripped movies are displayed as "Drives"

It just makes it very easy to find the movie and play it - not that it is difficult to locate the source anyway

On my home system, I can rip a 2hour DVD to 720x480 in about 1hr 45minutes... this is on a p4 3ghz with 1gb pc2700 ddr. A couple of clicks and you'll be ripping in no time.

Interesting - When I used it, I found the output quality to be fairly mediocre - No offense. I get much better results with Gordian Knot.

- G

I didn't write the program No offense taken. What are you using SVCD/VCD or Divx? I exclusively rip to Divx and quality is largely dependant on resolution/bitrate.

CH2

Sorry for the delay, just re-discovered this thread.. *grin* - I rip to DivX 5. Creating a 700MB file produces pretty good quality, but it depends a lot on the movie. I rip a lot of animiated movies for my son onto my computer, those tend to compuress far better than live action. If it's not animated or I want better quality, I usually go two CD's, 1400MB. I can tell the difference between the two if I pay attention, but after a few minutes of viewing, you tend to pay attention to the story and forget the quality, unless it's horrid.

Here is a good quality free program for making VCD's that is very easy to use. It's called VCDEasy There's also a program for those with DVD burners that allows you to make exact copies of dvd's called DVDXCopy. Though, if you a copy of a movie with lots of trailers, special features, etc., it will take 2 dvdr's to burn. This is because dvd burners can only burn 4.7gb blanks and the most current dvd movies are burned on dual layer or 9.4gb discs. I've burned over 60 dvd "backup" movies and more than 200 VCD's and SVCD's. There are alot of movies that will burn on 1 blank dvdr with full menus, etc. Here's a list of most of them:

When you rip a movie with Smartripper, is there a way to get the special features to work? So far, I'm not having any luck. I see the menu screen but when I click on a feature with my mouse, nothing happens. AFAIK, there's two ways to rip (although I see a lot of options, which I haven't played with): Movie and Backup. When I do backup, I see the menu of special features but it doesn't work. I'm using PowerDVD, and clicking the mouse just brings up the DVD GUI or makes it disappear.

Another question: A lot of the DVD's I've used try to install PCFriendly. So far, I haven't had much luck with it and it's been a pain and I've uninstalled it every time. Is it worth it to go with this or is it possible to get what you want without it? Thanks.
