If you have a DVD-R drive and a non-copyrighted DVD , the best way is to rip the title that you want (eg using smartripper) and then burn it back using a DVD authoring software that came with your DVD-R.

Umm dont you need to compress it as well, if the size is more than 4.3 gigs, then you have to compress and then recompile and then burn. Quite a lengthy process. Doing the encoding right now.

how many movies did you find that are larger than 4.3GB with all the extras stripped?

I just ripped french connection, that was 6.7 gigs without the extras. Of course I am just a newbie to all this but I am sure I will encounter more of these as I go along specially with long movies like Star warrs, LOTR etc. OTOH, I just saw the size of a fish called wanda and it was just 4 gigs

Damn, that's no good. I really hate re-encoding. I lost two harddrives and one RAM stick to re-encoding last month.

Is there a way to split a movie onto two DVD-R's?

soundforbjt,

i was just going to ask if anyone had experience with dvdxcopy. i was thinking about going with that program. if it does in fact work as advertised it seems a whole lot easier than the other available methods for making dvd backups. would you recommend it?

Yes there is and it can be found here. You will have to look around for the program though. Also this assumes that you have already ripped the dvd to the hard drive. If you dont mind sparing an extra DVD disc, then this is the way to go.

So which codec do you have to process it with to produce video that will play on a standalone DVD player? Output has to be MPEG2, correct?

I think it wouldn't work. DVDs are encrypted and when you first run Smartripper it will "unlock" the files.

I have tried DVDx and DVD2VCD. DVDx is much faster but the quality is mediocre. DVD2VCD is better but is still not as good as SVCD. Are you guys using default settings? The images are kind of "blocky" sometimes. All my conversions have been to SVCD.

I withnessed a copy of 2 DVD's using DVDxCopy program. Works great!
But it was at work At home I use DVD2SVCD, since I don't have a DVD burner.
DVD2SVCD gives me perfect quality. I think, I'll stay with that, since my second PC is
dedicated to this program

I wish there was either a really, REALLY good tutorial - or a simple program that you press one button and a DVD comes out as 2 CD-ROM's. [sigh] I've been computing since before the XT days but I just can't seem to figure out these $%^ DVD-rip programs. :frown:

Just thought I'd toss this "could be in the Hot Deals forum too."...............Divx Pro 5.0.3 for $14.99.
This seems like a good deal for a codec that a lot of people use and they should appreciate financial help. With iUVCR, Virtual Dub and Divx Pro 5.0.3 I got a 42gb capture of a VCR tape down to around 670mb that has audio and video in synch and the quality on TV seems as good as the original tape.

To rip to my dad's comp I use a normal dvd/vhs player and send them through a video capture box to his computer.
Most people wouldn't want to pay for one, but he does a lot of video editing and its just lieing around to be used.

Ati's all in wonder card's will do this also, but he uses a mac.
