Hi....

I have an i815E based motherboard, and I have a spare Riva128 based Viper V330 lying about. I was wondering if the Riva128 would be better than the onboard video or should I not bother?

Thanks

The i815e should perform better. However, you might still want to put the Riva128 in, because the it will free up some resources if the i815e video is disabled. At least that's what I heard. As for overall system performance with either, I have no clue.

The i810 features an i752 too right?
If thats true, then the Riva anyday IMO.

Im sitting on a comp with an i810 right now, and this chip is so utterly pathetically slow in 3d, not even Quake1 can run in 640x480 at a decent framerate.

I think the i810 might have used the i740 for video? Or maybe not...

I remember that the Riva128 was actually fairly decent. Quake 2 ran at up to 800x600 perfectly (OGL mode) and Half-Life ran perfect at 640x480 (OGL again). Can't remember how anything else performed on it.

i still have a Riva 128 card, not being used right now, but it is better than the i740 crap that is in i815 chipsets. I don't know about benchmarks, but the 128 will play a lot of semi-older games,(Q2, hl, Counterstrike) where as the i810 takes a big dump on 'em.

Yeah, don't forget the riva128 was one of the first NVIDIA products, which means it kicked ass in OpenGL.

the riva 128 frankly sucked, had horrible image quality. I'd stick with the i752.

I agree that the i752 has alot better image quality, but what good is that gonna do if you cant play anything on it cause its too slow?

th 128 most certainly did not suck, the image quality was horrible, but i'll take 30 torn frams per sec, over 2.5 nicely rendered ones

The Riva128 has drivers off the Win2k CD. You don't need Nvidia reference drivers (nor do they have any for download). It will run fine.

Frankly I don't think ChaSuiBao would be using either of these graphics chips/cards to play any 3D games. They're simply too slow, or ugly, or both, to handle today's, or even yesterday's games. However, from a 2D point of view, the RIVA128 might have a slight advantage(faster graphics performance as well as freeing up resources otherwise taken up by the i815E integrated graphics.

i get 22-23 fps playing quake 3 @ 640x480 with my riva 128. i'm not in any hurry to buy one of these next-gen cards when i'm having fun right now. just passed up a v3 3000 agp at bb for $63.99--so i'm not just saying something. i want to meditate over the k6-2 article posted on this site earlier some more bfore i make a decision costing over $50

unclebud, given the fact that he has an i815E motherboard, I'd think he'd at least have a P3E or P3EB, which can't really be compared to K6-X based machines.

Thanks everyone for the input.....the system is mainly for 2D use.....WP, IE, that sort of thing....with some very light gaming.

I have P3-600E on a CUSL2....not oc'ing yet. I think I will stick with the Riva128. No money at the moment to afford something better. Thanks anyway.

If you don't have too much money to spend on a vider card, I would check out the For Sale section of this forum. You can pick up older TNT cards (or something similar) for under $30 shipped.

Riva128 had pretty crappy picture quality and i752 is too slow to use as 3D-card (3D-deaccelator?). They both pretty much suck...
