Ok, thought that the 80 bucks u spent for the 68SNU wasnt worth it and u shuda gotten the radeon 9800? well we have a NEW at rivatuner forums at guru3d a 60% success rate of softmodding with the new rivatuner to 16 pipes and 6 vertex units. I HAVE A WORKING NU @ 16/6!!! 3dmark score increase from
03: 9.6 to 10.1 K
05: 3.3 to 3.8K

maxfilrate: ~5800

do u want the link?
do u want it?
u sure?
ok, make sure u do this first. set ur coolbits to, NO Overclock, and uninstall the reg key. RT has some conflicts with that. u can OC with RT itself, so ur not missing out on anything. then go grab the 66.81 drivers from somewhere on this forum. (search ya lazy ass!) Make sure to follow good driver cleaning procedures. Finally, uninstall ur old version of RT and then download this:

http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=163

happy moding! BTW: Anyone with a 6800LE will be able to mod to a NU and if very very lucky, to a GT core.

here is the forum link for you to stay up to date:
http://forums.guru3d.com/showt...fe&threadid=108905

Plz put results in poll and tell of your increase.

And yes Rollo, I'm a little pro nVidia now.

People that replied in the poll, plz state ur system, and ur increase of scores. I think it would be interesting to see who has the biggest increase. Update: There seems to be little to none increase in Doom3 so my last rivatuner thread where i said someone got 30+ frames extra from unlocking was probably full of BS. My apologies for believing him. and parading it around here.

Athlon XP 2500+ @ 3200+ (2.2GHz)
512 PC3200 RAM
eVGA 6800 (A1,16x1,6vp)

Soft-modded super easily with no artifacts. I'm up a full 6k points in AquaMark... I'll get up my 3dmark03 benchies later tonight.

Now I just gotta think if I want to bump the speeds up. I'm a very happy panda.

Unfortunately the ram on the 6800 isn't quite up to par with that of the 6800GT...otherwise I, too, would have to get one of these...

It's not, but after a modest overclock, it will come relatively close to the point where you wouldnt notice the difference in games. I guess that also means that a softmodded 6800 that is overclocked will rarely be able to outperform a stock 6800GT, but hey...i'll take the 5% performance hit to save $125. I know softmodding is based on luck, but I'm 3 for 4 right now, so I may go for it

BTW OP, I was curious as to what brand 6800 you softmodded. I didn't see you specify.

Is it really only 5%? To be honest I've been wanting to get a 6800NU and softmod it, but I can't find real benchmarks or anything anywhere to give me solid proof. *shrugs* I'll probably end up getting one anyway.

The 5% was an educated guess on my part. That's after a modest memory overclock. Actually, I was basing my guess on Rollo's benchmarks of his 6800GT with underclocked memory. Let me find that and see if I was close. I'll get you a link in a sec.

Text

These are his Doom 3 benchies.

..................6800NU .................6800GT....GT @ NU 325/700

12X10 0X8X 60.7FPS.................70.4..........62.8 = 89% of a true GT's performance

12X10 2X8X 50.6FPS.................61.5..........52.0 = 84%

12X10 4X8X 36.6FPS.................47.1..........37.6 = 79%

16x12 0X8X 46.9FPS..................57.6..........49.5 = 85%

16x12 2X8X 38.4FPS................. 48.1..........40.0 = 83%

16x12 4X8X 4.9FPS ..................35.7..........28.0 = 78%

I'm seeing an average of roughly 83% of the performance of a real 6800GT. This is if you keep the softmodded NU at stock speeds. When I speak of a modest overclock, I expect something clocked around 350/800. I guess that would net you around 90% of the performance, but I'm merely making a guess here. Some of the more heavy overclockers will do 400/850, and I suspect that will come within 5% of the GT. I know, I know, this is only Doom 3, but it just serves as an example to speculate on. Also note that these are high resolution, AF/AA examples. If you ran at a lower res (10x7) and/or didn't use AA/AF much, I suspect that even if you were only modestly overclocked, you'd be within that 5%.

Well, maybe someone here who has a true GT and gets a 6800NU to softmod will post results, so we'll know for sure.

I really do think the GT is worth the extra price if avalon can prove he found it for 250 somehwere. 400 is a bit too much. Im very unlucky, my memory doesnt go a hair over 750mhz. Maybe this will change with an NV silencer. the NU also has only 128 megs of slower ram, memory wise its a very crippled card. I can't play doom3 at high without some hiccups and farcry wont run with texture detail above medium without lagging. Its due to slow 128 megs ram. Lucky people have gotten ram up to 900mhz at which point, there will probably be much less of a difference. Its really a crime to put such a great core on a sub-standard memory setup, which is why nVidia will likely discontinue the 6800NUs. There is also a 6200 comming up, which i think we all anticipated. (read guru3d). i want to stress something: Unlocking Hard Wired Masked Pipes will NOT Damage Your Card!!! It will artifact if they are damaged, in which case, just mask them again.

Errr, he didn't actually find a GT for $250...

Anyway, doesn't the Gigabyte 6800 have 2.2ns ram at least or something? How's the success of that?

Yeah, not a GT for $250...you're lucky to find a GT for less than $375. I was talking about the BFG OC vanillia for $250 on outpost.com, it's in stock. I'm not sure what sort of memory the Gigabyte has, but that would be interesting to see how it did if it had 2.2ns memory. What do the normal 6800s come with?

This high mod success rate will probably make the ASUS V9999GE 6800nu a lot more popular, since it is essentially a GT/Ultra with 12-pipes but 1000 MHz GDDR3 and dual power inputs (and an Ultra PCB).

I believe the ASUS v9999GE is a card, said by Alexsey, that doesn't mod very well. In fact, he said, he ended up screwing up the card and making it permanently unstable by enabling the hardware masks.

With that said, is there a trend of which cards are best moddable and which aren't? I've been searching around all the tech forums and it's been fairly even with all of the different brands. Not too many eVGA, I see, but *shrugs*. Mine modded perfectly, so I'm happy.

I ran a few timedemo tests and on my rig I jumped a whole 13.2 FPS at 12x10 High Quality. I'm a very happy panda.

Here is my theory regarding whether or not it will work: this mod has most likeliness of succeeding if your disabled pipes are at the beginning or end of the list in the window. Rivatuner said pipes 5-8/pixel unit 2/bit 02 were disabled, leading me to believe that they would cause artifacts since it would make sense to disable pipelines in the middle of the set just because it was a chip that had to meet NU quote and didnt have failed pipes.

Results of my own testing, 3dmark03 lastest build w/ 61.76 whql forceware, scores rounded down

16x6 (Artifacts) @ 358/770 = 11150

12x6 (No Artifacts) @ 411/885 = 10900

12x5 (Stock) @ 411/885 = 10200

Just kinda shows pipes if you have to sacrifice speed for them isnt a big deal if you just oc a little more, though if you have the pipes and can oc, it could make a big diff. I know I shoulda tested overclocked at 16 pipes, but I wussed out overclocking as it was already artifacting so bad.

And yes Rollo, I'm a little pro nVidia now.

They are your lord and master- seriously.

Glad you like the mod, going to try it myself now. Congrats on the free performance.

Just the vertex unit - horrible artifacts with 16 pipes... got over 10000 on 03 though, with the 65.73 drivers and AXP 3000+ @400/875 Still a happy camper... could've been happier though ;-)

you also miss out on half the ram of a true 6800gt, leaving you at medium quality textures for Doom3 and a lot worse off for high res and/or lots of AA.

Avalon:
Marry me.

Sorry, that would anger my wife!

<hopes Avalon is not Denise Richards-Sheen>

Anyway, this worked for me. (mostly)

UT2003:
12X9, Holy Sh*t settings, 4X8X
6800NU STD:126Flyby (tests fillrate)/68fps
6800NU Modified: 166/80fps

But
16X12 would re-boot my computer during 4th benchmark

Doom3
12X10 2X8X
6800NU STD:50.6fps
6800NU Mod:57.2fps
6800GT: 61.5fps

12X10 4X8X
6800NU STD:36.6fps
6800NU Mod:40.3fps
6800GT:47.1fps

All benchmarks run at default 6800NU speeds, 325/700.

I have to say I'm impressed so far. I'm leaving this modified 6800NU in a while for further testing, very interesting development.

You would be wrong about that, see my post above. No, it's still not a GT, but a very compelling card for the money. So far I would say a modified 6800NU owns the <$300 market.

I'd call ~15% a lot worse off, and while high quality textures don't hurt the benchmark scores much on 128mb cards they do lead to some texture swaping durning gameplay.

Of course, for $100 less initial cost, some people may well put up with it. Out of curiosity, what card do you use Snowman?

Ah. You obviously aren't a customer for modified 6800NUs, why are you posting in this thread about why it's not a good deal?

For $250-$300. a modified NU offers a ton of performance? I just ran the research demo 12X9 4X4X at 50fps, that is not bad for a sub $300 card. (and the Doom3 performance is probably pretty close to your PE)
