Hello everyone!
I recently got a RMA accepted for my "old" GTX 295, and now i could get a card between the Sapphire 6970 or EVGA GTX 570 HD.

I play @ 2560x1600, and my mobo (Asus Rampage Formula x48) supports Crossfire only, so i was thinking to jump to ATI, and in the near future get another ATI to run Crossfire (while we wait for the new LGA 2011 to make the "big" jump)

What whould you do?

Thanks everyone!

You missed out on a good deal last week or so which put the 570 at $285

Just read that i can use SLI on my x48 board thanks to a "patch"...

In that case i might go with the GTX 570.
Any idea of the performance with SLI on x48? (non SLI cappable before the patch i mean...)

Same price w/o rebate, only $10 (msi) more expensive AR than pny 570.

Go with the 6970.

edit: 25x16? Yeah, 1280 vram are going to be a bit of a bottleneck, definitely go with the hd 6970.

If I understand correctly, you are receiving a replacement card and can choose either a 6970 or 570. @ 2560*1600 you are better off with the 6970. It scales better at high resolutions and has more RAM. I don't know why anyone, with the info you've supplied, would recommend a 570?

Nvida would. I'm seeing this in your posts , more than here, that you pointing to the memory buffer size as the ONLY factor in your decision making. The gtx 570 has 1280 memory and is designed for those resolutions and higher if run in SLI for surround . There are maybe going to be limitations possibly above 2560X1600 where some games/settings having more memory might help.
But if the OP plays any physX games, or heavy tessellation games, the gtx 570 has a edge. The poster having had Nvidia, might want to try AMD ? That would be as valid a reason, as any, but not pointing to memory size and deeming he has no choice.

at 2560x1600 4xAA the 6970 is closer to a gtx 580 than it is to a gtx 570. go up to 8xAA and it gets even closer. 1280mb of memory on the 570 is just a significant limiting factor in current games, and that is likely to only get worse over the next couple of years, not better. Generally speaking at 25x16 a 6970 is better, at 19x12 they are equal, and below that the 570 is better. Plus, if OP ends up going dual card the AMD scales better.

While GTX 570 might be better at high tessellation settings, when you raise the eye candy, anti aliasing and resolution, that advantage flops. Look at HardOCP's review of the HD 6970, you can see that even Metro 2033, a game that favors terribly nVidia, is performing better on AMD hardware.

6950 2gb, the 6970 for allmost 80$ more is not worth it. Just overclock the 6950 and grab another one later.

Thank you everyone for the comments!

Finally decided that i will go for HD6970, i like the chance to get another for Crossfire and the fact that i play at high res (2560x1600) in which i see the 6970 performs really well

Will update post once i have the card at home!

Yes they use the same pcb , the 570 has 2 6 pin and not all vrm 'phases' ? are soldered on the board. There is no proof there is a vrm problem, if your going to point me to that thread where 7 people had problems don't bother. What did that prove ?

Good choice!! You will appreciate the smoother and consistent performance of the HD 6970 over the almighty GTX 295.

I honestly don't care to debate anything with you as i stand by my opinion. I wouldn't waste money on a 570 unless it was the Asus DirectCU II 570. Reference 570's are crap.

Given the OP's situation, the choice is clear: 6970.

If you do add that second card later, look forward to fantastic CF scaling.

Its because you don't have any facts to back up your 'opinion'.

Thread was already kinda slightly derailed by yours and Castiel's side-discussion on 570 vs 580, but Castiel amicably withdrew from escalating the situation whereas you elected to pursue it as well as intentionally raised the level of rhetoric in the process.

Thread-derail and inflammatory rhetoric are not helpful, they are not productive.
