I either have a bad motherboard or a bad CPU (I got them both off Newegg) I'm RMAing the motherboard, but if that doesnt work, then im stuck with a bad CPU. How do I go about RMAing a intel CPU, and is it easy?

the motherboard is a Gigabyte DS3, CPU is an intel e6400, memory is Patriot pc25300.

The reason I know its either the board or the memory, is because Gygabyte's tech support said it was after a lenghty trial and error process. I dont get a post or any beep code, even when its just the board PSU and CPU hooked up.

due to memory incompatabilities, I had similar problems. After swapping ram out for a different kind, and upping the vdimm, I was able to work fine. I doubt your motherboard was bad, no matter what the tech said. I did also have some Patriot memory that would not post using any vdimm, and exchanged it for some Crucial Ballistix, (the ones that required +.4 vdimm to even post).

I would using some OCZ memory and try again.

Edit. I have 2 S3 boards, and the DS3 is almost identical in many ways. Duvie knows. Gskill may also be a good choice.

...If you don't get a post beep, and everything spins up, it's either your CPU, mobo or PS.

I can say from personal experience, that is not quite right. With the Patriot memory in, no post beep, and everything spun up. I changed the memory, and the same PS, motherboard and cpu are now running at 3409 mhz, so they obviously aren;t bad.

Um, you aren't supposed to get a no memory beep, with memory installed. They do it that way on purpose. But, if you get no beeps with only cpu, psu, and video card, one of those three things that he listed is your culprit.

No one has answered the original question.
It is very easy to RMA intel. Call support, their number is in your setup folder. They will email you shipping information and you just send the cpu to them and they will ship a new one immediately. It took about 4 business days for me toget a new E6400.

OK, sorry, but we were trying to tell him that most likely its a setup problem, NOT the CPU. Memory incompatability most likely.

The culprit turned out to be the heatsink, oddly enough. when attached to the motherboard (its a Thermalright Ultra 120) it was apparently casing a short of some kind - so thermalright is sending me a new backplate, which will hopefully prevent this from happening.

Thank you for all the help!
