Get a couple of geckos and let them loose inside.
Not only will they eat the bugs, but they will save you a ton on car insurance.

I'd never heard of such a thing as a cockroach until I went to college.

Move if you can.

If you can't move, I've heard this works:
sprinkle a little boric acid powder around the floor.

They walk through it, lick it off their feet, & die.

In one hellhole apt I had in college, a hamster got loose & disappeared. At night I'd hear crispy crunching sometimes, & catch brief glimpses of him eating cockroaches. (Never captured him again though.)

Boric acid does work pretty well, but it's messy. Try Combat gel, good stuff. Apply around plumbing and other places those little SOBs show up.

I might try this. Or just buy a can of raid.

FINALLY Boric acid is mentioned, it is THE BEST. It's cheap and the powder gets in the little bastards lungs and they die. We did a test in school and the roaches can tolerate raid and that gel crap, but Boric Acid works 100% of the time. Put it all of the nooks and crannies, cracks, everywhere and they will leave faster than a 8 year old at Neverland.

The most effective stuff is boric acid, available cheap on ebay as "roach prufe". You can put it under carpets, under drawers, behind the fridge, etc. I put some under my floorboards when I redid my floor.

To quote GingerSynaps: "1. Powdered boric acid (very cheap, and not highly toxic to humans, but don't leave it where pets or children can get it.)

2. Geckos. These little guys chase down cockroaches like you wouldn't believe. They love to chow down on roaches. Of course, not everyone wants little reptiles running around their apartment, but if you're cool with that, a few geckos make great pets and you'll never see a live roach again if you let your lizards run around loose at night!"

Get a few Iguanas as pets. Heh, I remember a lab getting an Iguana as a lab mascot to keep the insect population in check. Never get stuck with the lab in the basement.

The very best solution for getting rid of roaches: got to a local pet store and buy 2-3 house geckos. they will eat any insect they can find, and they only come out at night. I have lived in some nasty houses, and this has ALWAYS worked. the lizards are cheap, and they continue to work for months (years). You dont have to worry about having your apartment sprayed, or what the neighbors housekeeping is like. I am not making this up. It really works.

Do they eat flies and moths too?

They will move with you - you are screwed probably. . .I lived in an apt that came down with roaches - I moved and they came with me. I sold all my crap at a yard sale and moved again. This was when I was like 18/19 . ..

Stop fighting an uphill battle. This is a legitimate reason for breaking a lease.

Move... that sh!t is gross and you shouldn't have to live with it.

Try this for a roach trap:

Get a jar, coat the inside with vaseline or something slippery. roaches wont be able to climb out. Put a beer soaked piece of bread in the jar. (American roaches are apparently very attracted to alcohol.) Leave it out overnight, see how many roaches you catch.

Do they leave a lot of waste? Are they noticable? Will they go after human food?

Are cats likely to attack them if both are allowed to run free through the house?

Walmart for the boric acid.
But wherever you buy it, get the cheapest brand--boric acid is boric acid.

Oh yeah, and don't leave out food or water overnight. That applies to everywhere, not just the kitchen (including dirty dishes left in the sink w/ water in them). That popcorn, chips, water, etc that gets left out in your bedroom, attracts all kinds of insects, including ants and spiders.

Move...This happened to me once when I rented an apt. When we first move in it was clean but the roaches came a month later and got really bad. The problem is even if you nuke your apt, they'll come from the other apts. Had to be careful to disinfect all of our belongings before we moved to make sure we didn't move the roaches with us. That was nasty. They get into everything in the kitchen.
