Roadkill...How does it happen?

I know this seems like a strange question, but in the past two weeks I have seen three dead dogs in the middle of the expressway. Do the dogs wonder down there? Do people throw them there after they die? Or do they fall out of the back of a truck bed or something?
Also I wondered if people actually aim to hit animals that wander into the street. It makes me sick--even if it is something as little as a bird.

Someone hit my cat. Fortunatly it only ran over its leg and the leg was broken and dislocated, but he's healed almost perfectly since (his tail flops over to one side )

If I ever found out who did it, I would beat the person to death with a very blunt object and make sure he/she suffered extreme amounts of pain before they die!

Anyone who intentionally hits an animal with a car deserves to be killed.

Because something crosses the road and doesn't get the F*ck out of the way quick enough..........how did you think, Einstein?

I think Jenifer Flowers expressed that Slick Willy had this..uh..problem...

As a Truck Driver, Company Policy is..Hit the Animal!

Too many drivers lose control and make an unfortunate situation very expensive if they try and avoid.....Bambi....

I got 2 at one time a couple years ago. Three more and I'm an Ace!

Birds? All the time. Got an Owl in upper state New York once...he slid up the faring and stayed airbourne..couple flaps and went on his way...he was huge! Scared the crap out of me!

Never hit a dog or cat...yet...

I think they are just depressed animals who want to give up, so they walk out into the traffic.

I think a lot of the xway animals are lost/abandoned, some might just be loose & running though. Some people get rid of unwanted animals by just putting them out along side the road or whatever, though I can't think that would be too easy on the freeway. Same for the dearly departed, there's got to be easier ways than chucking them out of a window in moving traffic.

I wouldn't doubt that some animals are hit on purpose, but mostly I'd guess they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Tom...

The fact that you are a truck driver, means you are going down major routes at fast speeds. It can be expected that some animals will get on the road. If you tried to avoid the animal you could risk the lives of many humans.

I live on a quiet, low traffic street. The chance you will have to hit an animal to avoid risking a human is close to .1%. This alone says to me that whoever hit my cat did it intentionally.

BTW... When I say my cats tail flops to one side, its kinda like Willy's tail from the movie free willy. When it sticks up, its straight to a certain hight, but about halfway up the tail, he doesnt have feeling or control of it so it just hangs down.

I had a friend flip her car because she tried to swerve around a fawn. Everyone thanked Jesus, Allah, Buddah, and every deity that she was not hurt. My policy since then has been save my life first. To date I've only hit a skunk and I'm glad I did it. It was a two lane road that was heavily trafficed. Swerve left and I would've hit an oncoming car, swerve right and I would've went into the woods, slam on the brakes and I would have caused a pile up. Of course I would stop should I strike a domestic animal and make every attempt to find the owner. I would be wondering why the animal was wandering free.

Stefan, "I feel your pain". My cat was killed by a car, but I don't think it was truly on purpose, but more likely just thoughtless and ignorant speeding and/or not paying attention to the road. She (cat) was pretty careful staying out of road, generally a cautious animal, but I guess it just takes a single lapse... anyways, I have to wonder if one of the neighbors were responsible.

BTW, you are very fortunate your cat was only wounded, when you think about the difference in size of cat to car. How do you know it was caused by a car impact?

At first I thought someone had tried to hurt it by hitting it with a weapon at first, but after the vet looked at him, she said it was a car cause she could see the tire marks on the inside of his leg.

You didn't happen to be riding on Amtrak last week, did you?

A few of us on the train cross country happened to remark about how many dead cows there are along the tracks. Then some genius chimes in with "This could be the case like some other animals. Those cows decided to kill themselves." This guy was completely serious! I was LMAO.

I killed my own kitty. It snuck out the door while I was leaving for work and I didn't see it until I pulled out of the driveway and saw my poor kitty flying through the air.Evidentally it had tried to attack the tire to stop it from taking me away.My poor kitten died trying to save me. I had one other cat of mine attack a huge dog that my kitty thought was "gonna get me" .The cat actually chased the big dog away without getting hurt ,thankfully!

Did you read the quotes from Ms. Flowers? That sounds exactly like what she said. Different 'noun.'

Stefan
I sincerely hope no one did it intentionally. I never would, but given the inattention of most drivers, the motorists [we'll refrain from using the term murderer...for now] might never have seen the cat.
A panicked feline isn't much more than a blur...

We lost 'KC' [Kitty Cat] recently. Just disappeared. That cat hated me and I hated it, but would never wish it harm.....dream maybe...but never wish...

A lot of times, animals (especially cats) just panic and run out into the road.. I hit a cat last weekend out in the country on my way home, and felt like sh!t for doing it, but I couldn't stop. The worst case I have ever seen/imagined/heard of was two years ago, when I was living in Seattle, the whole family's favorite cat got run over by a hay mower and my brother had to shoot her. It just devastated the entire neighborhood. It was really horrible. Still bothers me. - BUT - I dunno how roadkill happens other than that...girn

My friend was driving on the freeway late one night when the car in front of him suddenly started screeching to slow down. A few moments later fur was flying everywhere and he noticed an entire severed deer leg lying on the road. The driver in front of him was probably pretty shook up but luckily nothing worse happened to him. I feel sorry for the deer though.
