Here's how I consider this a hot deal. I've got a cable modem at my apt with roadrunner...but my parents are at home on dialup which they pay for each month. I just switch them to RR dialup and since they use less than 10 hrs a month, its all good!

Road Runner in my area (NYC) raised the price from 39.99 to 44.99 when they introduced the 10 hours of dialup so I guess in my area, the 10 hours wasn't really free. Maybe in other regions the price was unchanged. I guess it's a good idea since it will enable you to access your account remotely on a laptop or something instead of POP-ing my friend's computers to read email.

Is it a toll free dial-up number?

Yeah they raised it $5 for me in NYC too plus I think unlimited ran out at the end of Feb for me...

Never used it anyway plus I can't get it to work on my palm/cell for wireless internet because THEY USE A PROPRIETARY DIALER THAT SCRAMBLES THE USER/PASS!

This is simply not true. I looked at the dialer script that they install on your system, and having written a few of these myself, they are doing nothing special. The problem you may be having on your palm/cell is that it doesn't transmit the username or password "RAW" which preserves special text, like the @, the most important being you@city.rr.com. Without that being transmitted raw, the system cannot authenticate you.

If anyone doesn't believe me, just take a look at RRDialup.scp that the installer places on your system and read their documentation on how to set up dial-up.

OK, looks like I have to eat my words a little bit. Logging in is quite easy, anyone with a modem can see, just call their local access number answer the username/pass question right and bam, you get gobbledegook.

After looking through the script some more and trying it myself, it appears that they are doing some sort of proprietary challenge/response after the login. If I had to guess, I would say that it had something to do with this line at the top of the script:
string prefix = "aolnet/ent."
You can't login to their system at all without using this prefix, otherwise the username/pass comes up as unknown, but if you do use this you get gobbledegook afterward. This causes DUN on Windows to close the connection.

Now, after all this, I could be wrong again, but this is what my limited testing has shown. If anyone else can get this running without having installed their software, please let me know by pm or by posting to this forum.

Finally, I'd like to apologize to TekDemon. You were right .

FYI - I use RR dialup sometimes when I stay in a hotel that does not yet have broadband, but RR dialup is not as good as you might think. You cannot access your primary computer back at work or home that is connected using your RR account because RR automatically expires your IP lease on primary computer logs you out of your RR account when you login through RR dialup. According to them this is a "security feature", but IMO, it is to prevent user from doing what megatron is suggesting.

I get UNLIMITED dialup with Roadrunner...through Earthlink. Up until a month ago, I had standalone Roadrunner @ $39.99 (went up to $44.99 recently) and standalone Earthlink dialup @ $17.95 and now I get both for the cost of Roadrunner alone.

How did you get this? I currently am a RR subscriber. Will I be able to get Earthlink dialup for free?

If you are currently a RR customer, you might be able to get the same service through .Earthlink. You'll have to cancel your RR account and sign on with Earthlink to get the unlimited dialup benefit. Plus you can earn 5000 Delta Miles

Very interesting thread. I had used RR dialup while I was on vacation in December. Using dialup, I would get periodic problems with their DNS server, couldn't get to any sites off and on thru dialup. I figure it's their growing pain in handling dialup access.
My RR offers Earthlink but I didn't know about the free dialup through Earthlink. Since Earthlink is usually rated #1 in customer satisfaction, I am thinking of switching. How is their Usenet newsfeed? After my switch, the only difference that I should notice is my email accounts or home page, correct?

So, is this service really free (up to 10hrs)? After reading the "Terms of Use", it seems that they have left some openings for potential charges. I would feel better if they did not ask for a credit card. Wonder why they can't just add it to your regular Cable bill? I would appreciate any comments from those using this service.

For now, I will continue my $10, once in a "blue moon" prepaid internet access by Slingshot. It gives me 600 local or 200 toll-free minutes per $10 card.

I checked with RR regarding being connected at Home and someone on the Dialup at the same time and it WILL WORK. This is the email I got..

"We understand that you have questions about usage of the Dial access
service. When you dial up it will not affect your home connection as you
are using two different connections to the network."
