I am a real estate agent... it has cost me ~750 for real estate school, and about another ~500 to get get started in the MLS and local real estate associate to use contracts. Took me about two months to finish school, with a full time load in college, and working 30 hr/week at my job (I'm 20)... the average payout of a house is between 1,700 - 2,500 dollars, no matter if you are the selling or buying agent. So, I figure if I sell or buy two houses for people I've got my money back.... but it is hard to sell houses to 50 year old couples on their 3rd home when I'm a 20 year old know-it-all
EDIT: Oh-- don't waste your money. About a year ago I attended a free real estate seminar... they all tell you the same thing: Buy a foreclosed/repossed property for 50k, drop some cash into fixing up the yard / carpet / paint / etc, then sell the house for 80k and keep the profit after the cost of fixing it up. Things they forget to mention: Average home sells in 120 days, while you make payments on the property each month... and people are so aware of the process these days it is not really a money maker unless you've got some luck. The rest of the seminar talks about how you can improve your credit by getting secure loans from bank 1 and 2, paying off bank 2's loan with the loan from bank 1 and yadda yadda stuff that does nothing really. Oh well.
