Just watching police giving the update on the suicide. It's... not good. I'll put the details in spoiler tags for people who don't want to know.

Apparently strangled himself while seated with a belt, also evidence that he tried to slit his writs. Just a brutal way to go.

Asphyxiation is not on the list of ways I'd kill myself. CO poisoning or caffeine overdose sound like more pleasant options.

Inert gas asphyxiation is my preferred method of suicide.

Cheap, painless, highly effective.

Ah, shit. I saw the first part in the headlines, but not the second part.

Sounds like he was really desperate to get out.

Just heard a relatively short interview of his with Terry Gross on Fresh Air (npr radio). It truly encompassed the breadth of this great man. Listen, he's dead nuts hilarious while also staying real and true and as emotionally honest as the day is long. It'll be on NPR and your local NPR radio web site by tomorrow, and you may be able to stream it later today.

What a brilliant guy! What a heartbreaking loss!

I saw this breaking on the news. I'm shocked for the most part. I thought he had a wonderful outlook at life and never thought he had inner demons. Such a great and talented actor he was. Him and Chris farley and John candy were the best.

RIP man.

Three of my all time favorite actors as I was growing up. Very sad to see Robin Williams go, he was certainly an icon in the movie industry.

Apparently Robin Williams when one-on-one with people “had no social skills” according to his long time friend Bob Zmuda. But “he came alive” with two or more people. I’m using direct quotes from Zmuda shown below and the CNN interview he gave just a few hours ago.

“There had to be two people in the room" with him, his friend Bob Zmuda told CNN's "New Day." "Then you were an audience, and then he came alive."
But one-on-one, Zmuda said, Williams "had no social skills. He couldn't handle it... I knew this man for 35 years and yet it was like I was in an elevator with a stranger."

Wasn't that a slow day to die? I still can't believe he was that depressed and had no recourse but to kill himself. Such a loss for a great person.:'(

It's probably the single worst way to go. Slow and painful. Takes a lot of self hatred to opt for that as your way out.

Its being said the cancellation of his show took a heavy toll on him. He didn't even want to do the show but was forced to because of money problems. It hit him twice as hard because he felt like a failure and the cash he desperately needed was no longer coming in. Thats also why he finally relented and agreed to Mrs. Doubtfire 2. He was apparently very cash poor and was going to have to/started liquidating assets. His $35million mansion was officially listed shortly after the Crazy Ones was canceled.

Everyone with bi polar and mental disorders have a true breaking point where they cannot take it anymore. He unfortunately hit his. His friends and family knew he was in a dark place, but had been there before. I am pretty sure no one saw this coming, they all expected he'd bounce back like before.

Listened to a show about him on Entertainment Weekly Radio. Minnie Driver shared a story about him from the day he filmed the bench scene in Good Will Hunting. He was sitting eating lunch in the park with some of the actors, and was just riffing on random things being his usual animated self. Random people were watching from a ways off and he called them over. Pretty soon he had a crowd of 200 watching his impromptu routine. Very few people have the magnetism or the skill to attract a crowd like that at will.

Such a loss, depression is just a terrible disease.

Yea, some company even sells a kit with Helium and a head-bag complete with instructions. I didn't know he was having all the financial difficulties, guess it makes it more clearer as to why this bout with depression was the one he couldn't deal with. All the same though he sure as hell wouldn't be the first to make a fortune and squander it, heck look at Curt Schilling, he put away $50 million from his pitching years then invested it all in a video game company which flopped, badly and he lost it all. He was reduced to auctioning off the famous bloody sock from the Sox championship in '04, it sold for $92K.

Why are people going to the Mrs. Doubtfire house and putting all sorts of objects on the front steps? They are just disturbing the current resident that lives there.

I feel a sense of loss that I haven't felt for any other celebrity that has died during my lifetime.

I believe because he was such a real person in a make-believe world. With all that reality comes all the brilliance but a tremendous amount of pain. Let's face it, the world can suck without those people who put an interesting spin on it.

Too bad Robin bought into the disease of the left-right paradigm, as he could have been as insightful as George Carlin. Otherwise ...RIP

I'm personally not a big follower of celebrity things myself.

But I'd have to say for me right up there with when Stevie Ray Vaughan, and John Belushi passed away.

I'll leave it there have posted enough all ready.
Belushi dieing didn't affect me at all. I didn't see the Blues Brothers, nothing he did touched me. Vaughn, well, I really dig a lot of his music. But he died in a plane crash, it's a much different thing.

Gotta admit, this one has really affected me. Not sure how much it's just my mood or what. I'm reminded of this quote, the kind that sticks to you:

"How frighteningly few are the persons whose death would spoil our appetite and make the world seem empty." - Eric Hoffer

I think Robin Williams was one of those people. However, I obviously had much less connection with him than other posters here. I don't know that I've ever seen one of his movies! I have never seen Mork and Mindy (which meant essentially nothing to me, I had no idea that Williams had anything to do with it)! Of course, I was aware of him, he's one of those people you hear about if you don't live under a rock, but he didn't mean a lot to me. Still, this has affected me a lot, somehow. I think it has to do with him being a celebrity suicide. It makes a person wonder about the nature of human existence.

What a talent. Sad he couldn't find meds that could help him before ending it. RIP.

Meds don't always help. I saw the same thing happen to my Dad, he just withered away mentally. He had tried every med in the book over the years and was prescribed some serious doses of some of them. They even tried electroshock therapy on him, but he just sunk lower and lower. I remember my last conversation with him, he sad he would rather feel nothing than how he felt. It's a horrible mental condition that makes you basically just throw in the towel and say "fuck it" to everything.

It's even more eerily similar to how my dad passed now that today I heard it was a belt and in the sitting situation.
