FWIW, the default BD-R disc formulation is very similar to the M-disc formulation, which is why M-disc BD_R discs will be fully compatible with Blu-ray drives.1000 year dvd and soon blu ray

The special M-disc DVD formulation is not compatible with regular DVD writers and some readers without an enabling firmware update.
What's interesting is that market pressures are forcing BD-R disc producers the other way. They are reformulating BD-R discs to use the older DVD formulation (but this will require firmware updates for readers and writers). The old DVD style formula is much, much cheaper than the inorganic formulation used in BD-R/M-disc type discs.
