I am being offered a PS3 bundle including the whole Rock Band setup.

My kids are 8 and 5 at the moment and would probably be the ones getting to play it more than me.

Is it even worth it for kids this age??

Thanks in advance!

This is my question as well. My sons birthday is this month and he is asking for it.

My son is 10.

My friend's cousin got the game and he has a younger, 11-year-old brother. Right out of the box, the brother jumped on and played drums on hard with no past musical experience. The song list is pretty clean, but it doesn't have the popish stuff younger kids are into, so singing might be tough. It could help building coordination and rhythm, though.

Kids of all ages play Guitar Hero - there's youtube videos of 4-year-old kids tearing it up on Expert.

It's more of a question of content. I wouldn't feel comfortable having a 5 year old singing "Mother nature is a whore" when manning the mic on "In Bloom". Plus there are some other songs on there that just are a little too mature/adult oriented for a kid that age.

I think they would have a blast with the drums though, some of the guitar stuff, and maybe a few of the songs in singing. If Mom/Dad aren't going to be there to play/supervise the playlists I'd maybe be a little more skeptical.

Well then that brings me to the question of .... FAMILY MODE. Is there a way to "make it cleaner" with a rating thing?? I realize that my limit the song list but again worth it or not??

To give you guys an idea of the "package deal" I am being offered -- with a little work I would end up with a 40gb PS3, RFOM, extra controller and the Rock Band bundle for about $300 if I do the deal.

I am thinking it may be worth a shot.

Is that out of the back of a white van in a Walmart parking lot?

Seriously, that's a heck of a deal provided there's nothing wrong with it. What's the "with a little work" part, though?

yeah, that is a hell of a deal. Since the PS3 alone costs $400, and the game costs $170...buy it without hesitation. But for the games, they edited out curse words. But I'm sure they didn't take out everything bad like what you said. There is no family mode or anything. My personal opinion is they could play it and have fun, it may be a little much for a 5 year old, but I have felt that 10 year olds could do well with it.

But again, at that price it should be impossible to pass up.

There's not really a family mode. It just comes down to individual song selection. You are pretty much safe on all of the classic rock stuff (Stones, BOC, the Who, Rush, ect). And you can always buy add on content that passes approval.

As for the deal - assuming there is nothing shady and it's a legit offer than get it. That's an incredible price for that bundle. That's almost $600 in gear.

Just a quick perusal of the Rock Band DLC shows that all of the songs are rated T for Teen. So, even though the 360 version has great Parental Controls they are useless for Rock Band since every song is seemingly rated the same.

The PS3's parental controls are a little more Byzantine because they don't use the ESRB rating system. Instead, it uses a rating from 1 to 11. <insert Spinal Tap joke here> I don't think that is useful for Rock Band songs either.

Ok thanks for the feedback everyone.

I know that what the upcoming "Disney version" would be ideal for my kids since it should have all the pop stuff in it (ie Hannah Montana, Jonas brothers etc.

The deal is 100% legit. It's a large package deal with some games, movies, and this stuff.

The little bit of work would be to sell off all the stuff I don't want/need (ie mostly the games and the movies). Essentially selling off the stuff for current used market prices would net me what I mentioned above. I would be paying shipping on the items I sold but that's not too horrible if sold in bunches. I have outlay a big chunk of cash first of course but it would come back to me "eventually". It's a gamble yes but not a huge one.

I'll probably move ahead with the deal and if the RB stuff doesn't pan out then I am sure I could get at least a $100 locally for the RB setup making the total cost for the PS3 about $200.

Thanks

Greg

FYI - I believe the Disney Ultimate Band is Wii/DS only and won't have any special controllers.

For that price, it is well worth it even if you just got the PS3. Do it for sure. If you end up feeling that Rockband just isn't suitable for your kids then at least you got a cheap PS3 out of the deal.

I have a co-worker who got it for their 8 and 6 year old kids for ps2. They love it.

They let them sing and everything, kids that age generally don't know what they're singing about anyways. They just told them they were only allowed to sing those songs while playing the game, the rule was enforced when the 8 year old started singing 'Pleasure' at the dinner table.

Whether or not it will adversly affect your kids probably depends on how good a parent you are.

They did take out all the f words.

Well, at least it wasn't the Divinyl's "I Touch Myself".

Yeah, my cousin's are 8 and both love guitar hero. I can imagine that Rock Band would have the same or greater effect. The 5 year old might have trouble picking it up though.

My nephew is 5 he can play bass on med now. It was funny he kept telling me to play the aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh song I was like what song is that. Then he said it was the song wear they go flying and I realized it was Highway Star. He was on drums at the time he got through the whole song and was signing it as he was drumming. This was on easy. I first saw him play when he was 4 he just turned 5 and everyone said he could not do it but he got through bass. What we do with the kids is you play you stay. If they bomb out then they are out so the next time they get to play they try harder to stay in. Ya a 5 year old should be ok once they practice a few times.

My sons love their PS2 version. They are 10 & 13 and I wouldn't feel comfortable with them playing some of the songs if they were much younger than that. I'm sure that's why it's rated "T", and not "E".
