The big metal/melodic death metal/metalcore/ect thread introdced me to a few new things, but also got me perusing the depths of my collection for the first time in a while. There's a lot of stuff from the late 90s and early 2000's that has totally dropped out of my memory, but I'm a bit stunned when I 'rediscover' it.
That was a major time for musical greatness...post-hardcore, metalcore, even nu-metal (it's not all bad; remember, people called deftones 'nu-metal') were really coming to the forefront. And melodic death metal was gaining steam at an exponential rate from its early 90's beginnings.
Yeah, I know, some of you old prudes are saying AHHH HE'S TALKING ABOUT THE BEGINNING OF THE END! Well...nuts to you. Post your own contributions from whatever era. ;P
But anyhow, I've got a ton of stuff from ~1998-2004 or so from bands that either made one album and broke up, or made one album and then just kinda of...faded away; maybe they put out some more stuff, but it wasn't the same. I have habit of getting into 'Dream Theater' mode, and not listening to anyone who doesn't have a whole catalog for me to enjoy...but it jolts me to remember how much I like some of this stuff. Might be a bit of nostalgia at play. But here's a few brief examples from me:
________________________________
Boy Hits Car - S/T
The Rebirth
Going to India
I saw these guys live around the time this album was released. Fucking awesome live band. Very Daryl Palumbo-esque vocals. Singer is a weird hippie-lookin' dude, but he's a damn badass. Halfway through the last song, he starts clambering up equipment, spider-monkeys out onto the ceiling rafters over the audience, does the last verse hanging upside down, then drops and finishes the song while crowd surfing.
Memento - Beginnings
Abyss
Blister
Another band that, while altogether talented enough, is notable for an awesome singer. I've checked in multiple times over the years to see if this guy ever got another project going (he's formed and disbanded like three bands without releasing anything). Nothing yet, AFAIK. That second song is a great semi-prog piece that deserves more appreciation. The track before it is a piano lead-in.
Who else has got some albums that have gotten some copious listening time, despite the band that recorded it being a bit of a fart in the wind?
edit: Try and post a link or something, there, dudes and fellers. My intent was to share somewhat obscure/forgotten music, not just namedrop.
