<< Good luck to you too. 41 MHz is just far too high if your data is at all important to you. I've seen too many drives fail at high PCI speeds, including a recent Maxtor I bought which died at only 38+ MHz. >>

well you said it right there, Maxtor, Not a very good drive IMO... Try this with a Quality drive, such as IBM, WD, Seagate (some models) and even some Quantums run fine at that Mhz.. Maxtor has a habbit of flaking out on you when you need it most...I never buy them and tell anyone who does not to O/C with high PCI bus rates...

My system is even 44Mhz stable... tho, for the past 2 years I've run a few Quantums and a Few IBMs with great success...

kfloster, I'm curious, what you have your RDR default sleep mode... you know Standby or Nap, etc..

I'm running them in Standby... (default for i850 bios 1002; wierd because default on i820 was Nap, which is slower)

My Quantum Fireball 10 Gig crashed at 38.3 MHz after 1.5 years. It was considered one of the best drives at the time I bought it. It still runs fine at slower speeds though. Both my drives currently are IBM, 34GXP and 75GXP. However, a hop over to the Storage Review Forums will quickly tell you that these drives aren't perfect at 40+ speeds either. As for the Maxtors, I agree: Not so good. Mine died at 38.3 and after that couldn't even be formatted.

If you're gaming only, it isn't a big deal though.

Good God that's an expensive system. Just what exactly do you do with it flokster? Besides bragging rights... (which I see lasting about until the end of this week )

Expensive? Perhaps if I sold it. Crap I've had the memory since January 2000!! But I already owned most of it and only paid $600 bones for the mobo/cpu/mem combo...Come on guys, give me a break. Thats cheap!!!! $600? 1800mhz?

Perhaps nobody mentions the P4 overclocking to high speed because it costs so much to get the damned things. P4 + RAMBUS + MOBO = wayyyy too high for anyone on the slightest budget.

I hate intel for sticking the P4 with RAMBUS. Prices won't come down to good levels for a while now, so I have given up on it.

800 Mhz for 600 Clams is just ok, but I've seen better. Y'all should checkout for 8wire.com for all the 411...and that got tons of free crap too.

Tips

Athon is about as fast as my girlfriend.

$600 for motherboard memory and CPU? How did that work?

Taking these (which are the lowest on pricewatch currently)

$340 for 256MB of PC800 RDRAM
$315 for a P4T motherboard
$850 for an OEM 1.5GHz Pentium 4
$600 for an OEM 1.4GHz Pentium 4

It should have been somewhere around $1000 - $1400. I don't get it. Where did you get it so cheap? I figure I must be mis-reading what you wrote, Fkloster, but I can't see what I'm reading incorrectly.

It was a trade-in of sorts. She said herself:

<< )) 1 Asus P3C-E i820 mobo
2) 1 128mb Samsung PC-800
3) 1 P3-1ghz OEM Slot1 cpu w/Tennmax P3SC cooler
4) $600 bones

for

1) 1 Asus P4T i850 retail mobo with ATX mounting bracket
2) 2 128mb Smart Technologies PC-800
3) 1 P4-1.5ghz retail socket 423 w/Golden Orb
>>

I still think the P4's are not worth the money at all. The cheapest systems configurable by even the best bargain shopper are still astronomically priced. Just get dual athlon 1.2ghz =P

fkloster, where did you get:

<< What are you talking about? P4T's come with a mounting bracket that fits ALL ATX cases! >>

from:

<< and if you ever want to upgrade you have to buy a new MB since they are phasing out the current P4 chipset once the .13 micron P4 comes along >>

Dulanic was referring to the fact that Intel is phasing out the initial P4 socket-423 interface in Q3 2001 (an amazing 6 month lifespan), replacing it with the i850E and the socket-478 interface.

You guys do realize that with a little more Ghz he could be cooking his lunch while on his PC. Yes, most microwave ovens operate at a frequency of 2.5Ghz. Not to mention that the only part of the human body that is "really" affected by microwave ovens is the eye. Hmm..makes ya wonder don't it...

Dulanic-

<< I would never buy a P4 at this time..... its WAY too expensive right now, no software is SSE2 optimized yet >>

Everybody said that when MMX came out, P2, P3, etc.

<< And the person who talked about Overclocking is right, everyone goes by the % OCed. Someone taking a 400Mhz CPU and making it run 800 is doing a major OC while 20% isnt that great. >>

Your right- I would rather have a 400Mhz CPU o/c to 800 because my o/c % is higher than going from 1.5 to 1.8Ghz.

<< Well have fun playing Quake 3 at 640x480 thats about all that system is good for right now. >>

And what is your system good for right now?

<< and if you ever want to upgrade you have to buy a new MB since they are phasing out the current P4 chipset once the .13 micron P4 comes along >>

And if you ever want to upgrade your system, won't you have to get a new MB. Or does yours support 1.5Ghz and above with DDR.

<< Wow what a waste of cash.... I would never buy a P4 at this time..... its WAY too expensive right now >>

Relative to your income. You could say that about any piece of hardware.

fkloster- does a goldern orb really provide sufficent cooling, artic silver or not? I thought GORBs were ok for FC-PGA celeries and most coppermines- but the retail cooler for the P4 looks a hell of a lot beefier than a golden orb.

You are planing to run Seti or Rc5 on that right? Your seti times should be right around 2 hours per wu.

Yeah fkloster, you need to get Rc5 running on that bad boy (once dnet gets an optimized core out).

My Duron 700 Runs at 1150, and has done so for >30 days straight as a server and my personal workstation. I got the MB and processor for <300

That's pretty impressive.

I still think the Pentium4 is a little pricey for the performance, but that is some nice speed. And the p6 was rather expensive in it's first incarnation to (P-Pro) and many people stuck to the p5 (P-MMX) for quite some time after the p6 was released. I expect the same situation, maybe people will hang onto the last interation of the p6 for a while yet, but as time goes on the p7 will be tweaked and ramp up in speed and take over. I think the Pentium4 will definately take hold.

Fkloster: I still think you are on crack for buying a P4 so early, but if you don't mind the price that's quite an impressive system

Noriaki, I respect your opinion alot. But understand, I didn't pay an arm & a leg for this setup. I traded my way into it pretty well (I got very luck on one particular part of the trade). I do not condone anyone else doin' this unless they can steal it though. I'm just sharing my results to the hords!

Wow, 150 times more Mhz than on my toying system worth about $1 and it costs $1000 (1000 times more)? I'd say you must be crazy, 286 has about 6.6 times better price/performance(Mhz) ratio ! Anyone knows how to overclock 286 ? I can install some kind of heatsink on the processor when needed for overclocking, too

P.S. Don't take it too seriously, I'm bit drunk&in the good mood tonight...

I think that 600 bucks was well spent. Good job fkloster.

Just wait until Alpha makes a heatsink for the P4, and then we'll see how far the P4 can really go!!!

Geeez, if I coulda I woulda.

Can you imagine? Start the third Millenium with the fastest system in the most popular hardware community on the planet?

Good going fkloster, you scored a coup d'etat.

Maybe I'll get one like that.... whenever eMachines start selling them

$600 can currently get you a 1.1 ghz athlon ($250),
an epox 8kta2 ($110)
taisol fan ($20)
leaving you $230 for 512mb of quality ram. Much better deal, and plus you dont have to trade in all that other stuff. For $30 more you can get a 1.2 ghz, but those arent really available yet so i didnt count it. 800mhz more for $600 isnt a good deal, considering the 1.8 ghz p4 is probably 10% faster than the 1ghz p3 that she traded for it along with the $600
