Flockster, may I ask you a question. Where do you get the money for all that?

Fritz does pretty well for himself and can afford the toys. He is a lumber broker/trader.

He is our resident Rambust cheerleader and hasn't regretted getting a RIMMjob. We've had out moments and I really respect him for his stand. It seems he has proven that P4 + Rambus can make a kickass system (for now )

Keep us updated fkloster

40 MHz PCI clock? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's kinda dangerous for me.

You should be the first one using P4 in this forums.

Argggghhhh people. You cannot link to MadOnion under your own acct. All that does is take you to the login screen if you're not logged on. I've archived fkloster's stats in my message above.

Anyways, I agree with Chuck. If you're running a 40 MHz PCI, good luck. Just hope you don't get TwinWD U-160 0K'ers in a few months. Good OC though.

getting a p4 or a really expensive processor to me, is like buying a CD over an mp3, sure the CD is better but it costs so much more and you really cant tell the difference.

Yes, that is quite a powerhouse system fkloster... Congrates on the O/C and the new toy

As for the PCI bus being Dangerously O/C'ed?? nah... I've run 41Mhz for over 2yrs and the
components are still funtioning normal...

And as far as the Athlon is concerned... I've seen a 1.4Ghz Athlon get in the 8900's with a
DDR GF, not sure if it was a GF2 or not, but Certainly wasn't Clocked at 299/505 which is a
Terrific overclock by itself....
3Dmarks are worthless... it rarely scales well to realworld performance... tho, with those
spec's, I think it's faster..

i dont think an athlon really is budget anyways. Its still like $300 for the chip, and way above what any one really needs (Except graphics artists, and people compiling huge amounts of code). A duron 800 is probably more than enough for anyone realistically. And if you guys dont agree with that you are on crack. SO i'm saying if you buy anything more than you really need then its a luxury. And hell yes i'm cheap $15 for a CD, are you out of your friggin mind , college students would go broke. CDs are a horrible value, and yes i know its stealing, and i dont care, almost all my software is pirated too and lots of the people here i'd say have the same thing.

3Dmark2K scores depend almost solely on the video card on all high-end systems. Hardware T&L does all transformations and only fillrate&bandwidth counts in the lower poly tests.

Gotta say fkloster that although I'd gladly see Intel burnt by the P4 until they have a 50% market share, I'm incredibly jealous over your rig

Interesting. In the past, when I have OC'ed chips past their comfort threshold, I would get some kind of fatal exception windows protection faults and stuff like that and sometimes windows would lock up. In this situation, with the FSB @ 120, I go to the deskstop @ default voltage no problem. But when I would benchmark 3dmark, periodicaly, I would get bounced back to the desktop without error until I increased the voltage from 1.700v to 1.725v. @ that point, I only bounced back to desktop @ the very end. @ 1.750v, Rock stable, no bouncing back, no nothin'...

OC'd Athlons with DDR so far have had bad reviews when compared to P4.
It would be interesting to see how palomino performs, can't wait for it

fkloster: what is your definition of "rock stable"? This is NOT to bash you (or anyone else), but people's definition of rock stable seem to vary as much as there are different systems around. This is just for my own reference.

Anyway, cograts with that system. It will really 'whip the lamaz a$$'

My definition of Rock stable is as follows:

1) Static CPU temperature
2) Static MB temperature
3) 3dMark demo looped for 4 hours 1024x768x32bit wihout event
4) Unreal Flyby looped for 2 hours 1024x768x32bit without event

...completed yesterday afternoon....

I am thinking I could go faster but I am not sure I want to risk my AGP/PCI/IDE health... processor temperature has been static from 1500 to 1800...

<< I've run 41Mhz for over 2yrs and the components are still funtioning normal... >>

Good luck to you too. 41 MHz is just far too high if your data is at all important to you. I've seen too many drives fail at high PCI speeds, including a recent Maxtor I bought which died at only 38+ MHz.

<< getting a p4 or a really expensive processor to me, is like buying a CD over an mp3, sure the CD is better but it costs so much more and you really cant tell the difference. >>

Except you can't legally buy (most) songs on MP3.

That doesn't guarantee stability. On my system, at extreme speeds I can run Unreal Tournament Flyby looped overnight with no problems, but if I throw a CPU stressor like BurnP6 on top of it it will crash in 40 minutes. I find 3DMark2000 better, but still not perfect. Gotta have both the CPU and GPU running at full load at least for a good 10 hours or so before you can call the system 100% stable. Neither program alone does that.

Eug, your right. All I know is that with a small increase in voltage (1.700 to 1.750), my system appears stable in my graphics intensive stuff. I think that artic silver/thermaltake combo has a lot to do with it, along with proper grease application...

Also of note Eug, I was checking my cpu temp often while clocking it up and noticed my cpu temp did not increase at all....

Wow what a waste of cash.... I would never buy a P4 at this time..... its WAY too expensive right now, no software is SSE2 optimized yet. And the person who talked about Overclocking is right, everyone goes by the % OCed. Someone taking a 400Mhz CPU and making it run 800 is doing a major OC while 20% isnt that great. I got very unlucky on my OC I only went from 900-999... Only 10% Well have fun playing Quake 3 at 640x480 thats about all that system is good for right now. Dont get me wrong I may like AMD, but I dont bash people for buying a P3 its a viable chip.... but RIGHT NOW P4 is a total waste... it has no major advantages at this time especially since nothing is SSE2 optimizied.... Its hellishly expensive... and if you ever want to upgrade you have to buy a new MB since they are phasing out the current P4 chipset once the .13 micron P4 comes along. So you spent a ton of cash for no real advantages at this current time, and you have no real big upgradability path.

Hey but now I know why fkloster was about the only person to defend Rambus in the Rambus thread... hes defending his purchase... people do that when they are insecure about the purchase they made.

What are you talking about? P4T's come with a mounting bracket that fits ALL ATX cases! I got my P4 system through this trade:

1) 1 Asus P3C-E i820 mobo
2) 1 128mb Samsung PC-800
3) 1 P3-1ghz OEM Slot1 cpu w/Tennmax P3SC cooler
4) $600 bones

for

1) 1 Asus P4T i850 retail mobo with ATX mounting bracket
2) 2 128mb Smart Technologies PC-800
3) 1 P4-1.5ghz retail socket 423 w/Golden Orb

Dulanic, turn on your brain before you talk. Last time a checked, 800mhz for 600 bones is a fair deal. Why would I have to worry about an upgrade path before next x-mas when I am already running @ 1.8ghz?????

"Boy, I'm going to be so sad come July 2001 when I'm stuck with this stupid socket 423 @ 1.8ghz when Dulanic is running a 3ghz tbird DDR..!" (whatever dude) Since when does a motherboard platform remain on top of the echelon for longer than a year (besides the BX) before something better comes out?

Get your facts strait about P4 mobos too. Asus' board fits in any ATX mobo...FACT! :|
