That was a class A, major-league, googlopexic type of a blown call. I haven't seen a screw job this bad since I saw that black midget porn video i watched the other week.

Must not have watched the 7th inning then.

I watched the entire game & from what I saw the 7th inning HR/double & the winning run call while both no doubt questionable could have gone either way ... I had more issues with the strike zone that seemed to change based on the count during the entire game myself.

Of course not being a fan of either team, my vision wasn't effected by a rooting interest!

What do Matt Holliday and Nicole Ritchie have in common?

Neither like to touch the plate.

Why didn't the Padres coach just rush out to contest the decision? Any possible recourse?

Cuz they know that the Rockies got screwed out of a HR

You can say that, but you never know what would have happened if they counted that as a HR. The Rockies would be up 2 at that point, so you never know how the Padres would have played the rest of the game knowing they were down 2.

But as for the home plate call, that was it for the Padres. They won't have another AB, they won't get another chance. The game ended right there. That is the major difference between the two blown calls.
Dude that HR was CLEAR error, you can speculate it could have changed the game all you want but most likely would have been 7-6.

Not only that but there were 2 people on base and that would have been 1 out, so we can speculate what that would have been too.

Matt Holliday is a super-star.

It didnt look like that Holliday hit the plate when I saw it happen live. In fact I said to my friend 'man thats pretty ballsy. I'd be scrambling for the plate'
But on replay the Padres catcher didnt have control of the ball. he didnt scramble to go pick up the ball and Holliday didnt go scrambling for the plate.

What do you expect the ump to do in that situation?

That is an easy answer.. absolutely NOTHING!!! The play is not over until 1 of 2 things happen.

1) Holliday touches home plate, run scores game over!
2) Barrett tags Holliday out, No run scores game continues with 2 outs, nobody on base.

Those are the only things that can happen. The only thing I can come up with is the ump thought about it long enough to say that Holliday touched the plate somehow.

right. the ump sat there and sorta walked a quarter of the way around the plate before just nonchalantly signaling 'safe'. i think he saw the ball lose and Holliday laying there and assumed he hit the plate and didnt actually see it. normally you'd think the ump would be making the safe signal several times out of excitement especially in a situation like that...or at least made the call initially.

i just hope this doesn't lead to calls for instant replay in baseball...

Yes, the delay with the ump's call was just really weird. First it looked like he was waiting to see if Barrett would hold onto the ball so he could call Holliday out. Then he sees it rolling free, but there's still no call, so you're left to assume that he's saying Holliday didn't touch the plate and Barrett didn't make the tag, and the play is still alive. He waits until Barrett has retrieved the ball and is in the process of making a dive at Holliday to make a very ho-hum nonchalant safe call, as if to say "you're just wasting your time Barrett, he was safe all along." So why'd you hesitate ump? Nothing looks worse than not making an instant and decisive call in those situations.

From what I saw on the replay, Holliday's hand did slide under Barrett's raised toe, but that foot was a few inches past the plate. I don't believe that Holliday's hand got any of the plate with that slide. Barrett scrambles for the ball, Holliday just lays there, either stunned from his chin-first slide, or convinced he was safe or trying to convince everyone he was safe.

Everything about that play was ugly, from Holliday's face plant, to Barrett's inability to come up with the ball, to the ump's inability to make a quick and emphatic call.

It wasn't a home run. It didn't go over the fence. Even the fans said it hit some wire thing on the top. They would have been shouting that it hit something else if it had gone over.
