Just played for a solid 2 hours, and I'm absolutely loving this game. I think it's a major step forward for gaming/educational gaming.

It is, I have already been hitting up some of the songs on my own. It won't beat guitar lessons but it is fun and will teach you. This is easily my favorite game on the ps3

Just wanted to put my 2 cents in.
I got rocksmith on tuesday.
So far i've loved it. One of my friends who playes did not like it (Jackass is too impatient to understand the idea of scalable difficulty) but the other one does.

Overall i think if your interested in playiong guitar and learning it better its a great tool. I've already gone from not having learned anything despite owning the guitar for 3 years to knowing several chords and starting to develop the callouses and muscles.

AWESOME GAME

I've been playing it solid for a week. I've definitely gotten better at chord changes and building the muscle memory in find frets. For those 2 things alone, it's a great tool and game and if it helps keep you motivated to put in the hours of practice necessary to get comfortable with the instrument it's awesome. If you don't have any music background I'd still recommend lessons(books,instructor,dvds,etc...) to go with the game to understand some of the "why"s involved with music and guitar in particular.

I plan on getting this game sometime in the future (to busy right now) so hopefully I can pick the guitar back up. I've played on and off for about 20 years now, but for the last 10 haven't hardly done anything and only get frustrated when I try because I have forgotten so much.

Ars seems annoyed with several aspects of the game.

Pretty weak if you ask me.

1) Lag? Sure, if you use only HDMI for both audio and video as the article suggests almost all people do. That kinda surprises me, as I've used HDMI for video and optical audio to my receiver for audio since Day 1, I'm surprised anyone uses TV speakers for audio, that's just awful. Maybe it's because I'm a PS3 user and it's also a BRD player so I'd naturally use my stereo for DVD/BRD audio? I dunno, I'm blown away by the fact that they suggest most people use only HDMI... sure, maybe college kids, but anyone wanting to actually learn to play guitar? Nah.

2) Difficulty setting? I can understand this one, and I could see it fixed easily in a patch. I like the ramping up difficulty/warming up part, but I do understand some people might want to play the most difficulty setting immediately. However, this game is made for those wanting to LEARN guitar, not as a game for pro guitarists to just play songs.

3) Unlocks? Meh, many games have an unlocking system (see any contemporary console FPS). Doesn't really bother me, especially if this guy is the stud guitarist he implies he is, just unlock the stuff quickly .. or buy the "cheap" DLC to automatically unlock it all.

I just wish you could set an option to show the actual score scrolling across the bottom to go with the fingering diagram, makes it a lot easier for me to work on my timing if I can see the notes and not try to judge if that is a series of triplets or or sixteenth notes coming up.

I picked up the game last night and played for an hour or so. I already play a bit (no problem moving among chords, can play scales and some easy solos) My initial impressions:

1. The "learn the song, then play the gig" level design seems flawed so far. I played through one rehearsal for each of the first 2 songs (Rolling Stones, Black Keys) and then it sends me to the "gig" and has me play those songs and then 2 encores that I hadn't even seen before. I want to actually finish learning each song on its hardest difficulty before the game moves on to the "gig".

2. It's going to take a while to get used to the color coding to know what string to fret/pluck in advance. Like someone said, it would be nice to have the option for the score or tab scroll on the bottom of the screen.

3. I had some issues with lag, but it's currently hooked up over PS3 - HDMI - TV -Digital Out to receiver. Sending audio straight to the receiver tonight should fix that.

I'm excited to play more tonight, and if I have any other thoughts worth sharing I'll come back to post.

I'm going to disagree with your statement here, mainly because you're assuming that people using only HDMI are going directly into the TV which ISN'T true. Many modern sound systems come with receivers that have many HDMI ports that people utilitze to switch between video/audio and have only a single output HDMI into the TV. The audio still goes through the surround system. This is how my sound system works, and most of my friends have a similar setup (all working professionals out of school). I can't say it's more or less common, but I will say it's much more common than you're implying.

HOWEVER I will also say that this doesn't have much to do with the game itself as it's just how it has to be with that type of set up and software. People reviewing based on lag just don't understand that Rockband and Rocksmith work very differently and it's impossible to get the HDMI delay out of a real time system. That's just how it works.

I bought it for my girlfriend a couple of weeks ago. She wants to learn how to play, but come to find out she doesn't have the patience to sit down and practice, so she hates it. We usually just end up playing Rock Band or Guitar Hero. Maybe when they come out with bass compatibility.

I've had fun with it, but I really wish I could choose a difficulty, or at least have it ramp up a lot faster.

Yea I searched before making a new thread!

Was reading up on this and have it coming to me as a Christmas gift. Learning the guitar is something I've always wanted to do but never wanted to spend the money on lessons for or the time of driving somewhere to get those lessons. I've had a Fender electric guitar for a number of years now that my Dad gave me half in hopes I'd learn to play and he also plays with it when my parents visit. My neighbor gave me an acoustic guitar that has a amp output that I assume works, though have never tried using it. No clue what the brand of that guitar is but it works and my Dad ends up playing that over the Fender he gave me whenever he visits but says it doesn't hold it's tune as well as his Martin does but it's still pretty good considering I got it for free.

Anyway.....

I'm really excited about this game. If it gets me to learn even some basics of playing and keeps me engaged in it enough to keep at it then it's a win in my book.

I've looked at videos and books but I always get to frustrated so I hope this makes it at least fun enough to shake off any frustration and keep going with it.

For those of you that have owned it for a period of time now. Any updates to report on how it's been? Are you still using it? Or has it started collecting dust?

If you really want to learn, this game can help. Anything that can help you learn is a good thing. It does a good job of teaching techniques, and has enough songs that I'm sure you can find something that you really want to learn. If you want to start now, Google guitar chord charts and start learning them. It doesn't matter if you really understand what you are doing from the beginning, you are trying to build muscle memory and get to where you don't have to think about them when you're playing.

I still feel the same about it. The bass expansion is supposed to come out in a couple of months, and I'm hoping my girlfriend will actually use that, she is far more interested in bass.

I've only had this game for a few days and I really enjoy. I am still discovering what the game is capable of. Is there any way to practice only certain parts of a song without having to play the entire thing?

Does your receiver have assignable I/O's for each device setting? Many newer ones will let you assign a video & audio port to the device you are using. For this instance you'd do "Xbox" Video: HDMI 1 (or whatever number) and then Audio: CD (Or TV/VCR/ect audio RCA input is open).

As for me...I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas about this game. I grabbed it at Gamestop last week for $50. And now I have this on order waiting to get to me:

http://www.rondomusic.com/al-3000rootbeer.html

Weee!

There's supposed to be a Megadeth pack coming out in Dec. Hangar 18 and Symphony of Destruction are the two main songs. Not sure what the third one was. This game needs more metal.

When does the PC version come out? My 11 year old son wants this for the PC and he plays bass right now with Orchestra and wants to learn guitar now, his friends have him convinced that this is a great thing, would I be better off buying a electric guitar seperately and if so are there any Amazon.com deals that would be better than some 90 dollar deal that he found. He seems to think that the 90 deal would be fine for him to learn on and I am one who firmly believes you get what you pay for usually. I know I am mixing up topics here so I apologize for that.

I really love Rocksmith. I have had it for around a month now and it really makes learning the guitar fun. Just like any learning tool though, you only benefit from it if you put in a real effort and invest a good amount of time into it everyday.

10/10 for me.
