That’s why it need to be codified into law. As we learned from the ACA it won’t be so easy to have laws reversed.

I do worry about Republicans getting a toad as head of the FDA and changing the definition that way.

Maybe they can write laws requiring a majority of government scientists that way it won’t be easy to change
Man are you going to be sad when SCOTUS suddenly invents a right for states to implement their own drug regulations on top of federal ones.

As far the US goes, it's heavily concentrated in the south/bible belt, is hugely white in base and a lot of overlap with what is more commonly known as Baptist.

SOUTHERN BAPTIST. If you’re going to critique, at least get the sect correct. Southern Baptist broke from the Baptists back prior to the Civil War over…slavery.

Interestingly, it took until the mid-1990’s to remove the explicit support for slavery from the Sou. Baptist constitution.

Flawless Bible doctrine is probably the most consistent through all of them. Also generally feel Revelation is the most important book of the Bible. The rapture is coming soon. And everyone we don't like is going to burn in hell.

Those are generally consistent through all of them.
My partner's evangelical dad is a big science nerd... except for evolution, because that's against the Bible
Definitely gonna be interesting next time I see him, it's been 5 years, no idea how he'll behave.

I'm a recovering Catholic raised north of Mason Dixon line. It's all the same to me.

I remember an episode of Cheers where Woody decided his marriage wasn't going to work because she was a Lutheran (Church of America) and he was a Lutheran (Church Missouri Synod). (Didn't remember the specifics, just looked it up on YouTube...I think they even got into their doctrinal differences, but my ears glazed over).

Missouri Synod is very anti-women's rights, especially in church. Other than that they are a lighter version of the rest of evangelicals. Other Lutherans in the US tend to be pretty liberal. I actually learned about the big bang in Sunday school at an ELCA Lutheran church when I was a kid, taught as a real thing.

Really have little idea what the differences are between all the Protestant sects. I initially assumed the Cheers writers were making those sects up (like Monty Python with the Judean Peoples Front vs the Peoples Front of Judea). I suppose it's a consequence of literacy (and, presumably, of the Bible being published in languages most people can actually read) - once everyone can read the Bible for themselves they are going to disagree on how to interpret it.

[Edit - can't believe I mis-spelled "literacy"]

Reminds of the classic Emo Philips joke:

Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, "Don't do it!" He said, "Nobody loves me." I said, "God loves you. Do you believe in God?"

He said, "Yes." I said, "Are you a Christian or a Jew?" He said, "A Christian." I said, "Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?" He said, "Protestant." I said, "Me, too! What franchise?" He said, "Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?" He said, "Northern Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?"

He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region, or Northern Conservative Baptist Eastern Region?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region." I said, "Me, too!"

"Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912." I said, "Die, heretic!" And I pushed him over.

I was excommunicated from a Missouri Synod church as a teen for considering a Masonic organization because our pastor considered masons to be satanic.

I always refer to the Missouri Synod as the crazy Lutherans.

I think it was Freakonomics that had an episode about American religion, I think in his series about American culture. It talked about how in America religion competes for clients, which is why there are so many different sects of it, as compared to countries where it's more static.

So apparently women didn't just lose their 14th amendment rights, but also their 1st amendment rights. But as long as they get to keep their guns, they'll keep voting for the republicans, assuming the 19th sticks around.

Seriously What the Living Fuck is wrong with republicans, besides that they know they can't be voted out.

I get tired of saying “ this is insane” when it comes to Republicans but this is insane

You guys do realize the reason Matt Gaetz and Ted Cruz and all those mouth breathers say these things is precisely because that’s how you get attention and improve your stature in right wing circles. The more you piss off the libs the more they like you so it’s essentially a competitive exercise at who can say the most outrageous things.

Sure, all of that. It's in-group speak.

But it's also intentionally dehumanizing because the fascists are teaching their right-wing authoritarian enablers that it's OK to murder your political opponents.

It has been clear who these people are and what they want from the start. Anyone playing stupid at this point (looking at certain posters who will claim they're not to blame for any of this just because they tacitly supported Republicans over abortion alone), this is your chance at a wake up call. This was never about abortion. Republicans do not actually view fetuses as real people and this was never about protecting them. This is about subjugating women. This has always been just about that.

Yes, religion in the US operates like pyramid schemes.

Sounds like my posts make you very upset. Remember, the ignore button is available to you!

Also you might want to consider what practical differences there are between national political campaigns and obscure tech message boards.

Except the problem is their voters love this stuff. They enjoy it. The evil makes them joyous. The aren't being forced to love it. Ergo they are all evil shitty human beings. Mid level Nazis, tens of millions of Americans

To the people who claim that Republicans don't want to and won't try to end freedom to travel:

Further interesting developments on the topic of travelling to another state to get an abortion:

The Texas Freedom Caucus, a conservative faction of Republicans in the state legislature, sent a letter on 7 July to a law firm that offered to cover employees’ expenses if they travelled for abortion. It threatened Sidley LLP with felony charges, claiming Texas can criminalize anyone who “furnishes the means” for an abortion, regardless of where the abortion occurs. The letter cites a 1925 law which was not formally repealed after the supreme court codified the right to abortion in Roe v Wade in 1973; last week, the Texas supreme court confirmed the 1925 law can be applied.

The lawmakers also outlined proposed legislation that would allow individuals to sue anyone who financially assists with a Texan’s abortion, regardless of where the abortion occurs. The law proposes that such assistance be considered criminal even if a Texan travelled out of state for a medication abortion and took part of the drug in Texas.

Segment on CNN right now. Many large corporations in addition to cover abortion through their health plan, will now offer to cover travel costs out of state.

Sounds as if the above is a direct threat to this idea.

Seems they are indeed going to try and stop women travelling to another state for an abortion. If they can

criminalize anyone who "furnishes the means" for an abortion, regardless of where the abortion occurs

Then presumably that would include any bus company or airline someone used to travel to a state where abortion was legal, thus making it near-impossible for women to travel to seek an abortion? At a stretch it might even make interstate transportation companies hesitant about allowing pregnant women to use their services at all. Would a small car-hire firm risk renting a car to a woman who might be travelling to get an abortion?
