He definitely was a better and more trustworthy movie reviewer than many others.

He may have been the first person to get a Pulitzer based on his review writing.

RIP

7. Little Indian, Big City (1996)

"There is a movie called Fargo playing right now. It is a masterpiece. Go see it. If you, under any circumstances, see Little Indian, Big City, I will never let you read one of my reviews again." — Roger Ebert

It is a sad day today.

A great man has died, but his memory and his influence will remain.

RIP.

Loved his reviews. Staying up past 12am to watch ___ & Ebert was always a treat as a kid.

good god the doctors really screwed him up

"During his various surgeries, doctors carved bone, tissue and skin from his back, arm, and legs, and transplanted them in an attempt to reconstruct his jaw and throat, though these transplants would each be unsuccessful, and eventually removed. As a result of these procedures, his right shoulder was visibly smaller than his left, and his legs had been scarred and weakened.[99]"

He was really a cool guy, I read a lot of his stuff. Much more than just a movie critic, a great human being. RIP

>> Critic Roger Ebert Dies at 70

Another loss to absorb. Mr Ebert was always very generous with his time . He communicated with my nephew and inspired him to write reviews.

Paul Rodgers is the next generation critic. Check him out and let me know what you think.

I really don't get all this adoration. The guy was a dick. He was a bully. If you ever watched his show with Gene Siskel you'd have known it back then. He treated Siskel like a red headed step-child. His asshole persona reared its ugly head long before his illness.

This is a ridiculous sentiment. I regularly watched that show as a kid. The two would exchange barbs but it was entirely two-sided and if anything Gene was the more obnoxious and imperious of the two.

I find nothing offensive in any of the quotes that article lists.

Roger Ebert was the finest living film critic in the past 40 years, and likely the finest ever. Rest in peace, Roger.

He was a cool ass dude, I remember ages ago I was riding to work in a co-worker car he had Stern on. And Ebert had called into the show. He was proudly telling Howard how he'd lost 25lbs and Stern said "that's like throwing a deck chair off the Titanic" Ebert laughed and they went back and forth. He seemed like a real down to earth guy. Stern was going hard on him and he didn't get bent out of shape at all.

I remember the huge deal made by the gaming media about him saying video games can never be art.

I just found he also made an apology of sorts.

Both very thoughtful and well worth reading.

RIP.

That coward just tried to make up for the backlash from his tirade about video games. He still admits he never bothered to try one, and in the end all he says is "I was a fool for mentioning video games in the first place."

And that's how I'll always remember him, a fool. I have no respect for a critic who forms opinions on a purely theoretical basis without any knowledge of the subject. If I can't respect his opinion, then his entire line of work in my eye is worthless because all he does is express his opinion... which I no longer trust.

The Ebert that I found fair and intelligent has been dead for a long time.

yet he has vast knowledge on film that you will never come close to comprehending, and though you lambast him for poking fun at your video games, you declare all of his criticism to be null and void?

cute.

Siskel was a restaurant reviewer that was good at general criticism, but was tossed in to work with Ebert for entertainment value. He didn't really know the difference between his asshole and film.

Ebert was a film scholar--his TV show didn't actually suit his value, but it was there to popularize what he loved.

I'm guessing you actually hate him because of what he said about that whore, Palin and the throngs of mindless Teabaggers?

I still didn't agree with him saying that video games in general are art...considering there are artists contributing designs to making them lol.
