I think the biggest glaring omission in the prequels was no Han Solo. I have the feeling that a Han Solo standalone will be like XMen First Class, which IMO is the best XMen film.

Han had no business being in the prequels, with that, uh "story."

Not only was he completely uninvolved in those politics at that time (what, he would have been 10 or so?), forcing him into the middle of that claptrap just to have a Han Solo would have ruined the last remaining shred of sacred content in the Star Wars world that was wrecked by those shitty movies.

XMen first class really was quite good. I still like X2 the best though.

Yup, these origin movies suck, it's literally a cash grab. We don't need a Han Solo origin movie at all. His character in the original trilogy was practically perfect. They are going to totally mess it up.

Neither did Boba Fett as a little kid.

Actually that reason alone is good enough for a Boba Fett standalone movie. Lots and lots of spinoffs can effectively be a papering over of the prequels.

Back in 1977 the star wars concept was off the chain but in 2016 it's just another Sci-Fi movie. The force awakens didn't really do anything for me as it didn't break any new ground just like the last star trek. Next they'll copy battlestar galactica and have an endless space convoy of rebel assets roaming around without a home.

What is it with people where they feel the need to have background movies/shows for every semi-popular or popular character in a movie or show? One of my biggest pet peeves in Hollywood is when a popular movie or show gets some sort of prequel, it seems that producers feel the need to insert younger versions of even lame characters around every corner. Many of these characters (such as Fett, who I'll discuss later) are popular precisely because of their mysterious past and origins. Expounding on these folks' backgrounds should be left to fan fiction or the lame EU-type material.

Boba Fett isn't getting a standalone movie because he was a snotty little brat in the prequels. In fact, his appearance in the prequels (or, more specifically, his portrayal in the prequels) diminishes him in my opinion. He is getting one because he has been one of the most mysterious and interesting characters in the SW universe since the late 70s. There is a ton of EU and fan fiction about him as well which stoked the flames. I will be shocked if a Boba Fett background movie isn't a complete shit show which panders to the lowest common denominator in order to sell Boba Fett action figures, t-shirts, and underwear.

Sticking in a prequel cameo of a young Han Solo in the prequels would've been dumb and completely unnecessary. Sticking in a young Lando would've been dumb and completely unnecessary. I can see it now:

NERD #1: "HEY! Look! See that 10 year-old kid in a white shirt and dark vest over Jar Jar's shoulder? That's a young Han Solo!"
NERD #2: "OMG! You're right! Wait - who's that over by Qui-Gon Jinn, next to that pod racer?"
NERD #1: <straining> "HA! That's a young Lando Calrissian! You can tell by the cape and his Bespin outfit! He is a pod racer mechanic!"
NERD #2: "I will just die if this is where Han and Lando met!"
NERDS, IN UNISON: "Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeek! Han and Lando are talking!"

This is the kind of lame shit Lucas pulled. Unless they played a pivotal role in those events, giving every character a prequel cameo would be nothing more than pandering to get more toy sales and would be dumb. The prequels were dumb enough on their own and didn't need any additional assistance.

God so much this. Just a perfect post.

I've said it a dozen times in this thread and a million times in real life conversations -- the Fett movie(s) and/or Solo movie(s) are unwanted, unwarranted and will simply NEVER live up to any expectations and will simply diminish the mystique and love of these characters going forward. Lucas already ruined Fett with the stupid prequel storyline (though, I just completely ignore the prequels like they never happened so Fett is still OK in my book).

I LOVE Star Wars. And I mean LOVE it -- it was pretty much my entire childhood in the 70s and 80s But I never was one to get into all the EU and "borderline canon" crap.

You are very right. There's this subsection of fandom that requires every single detail be explained. It drives me insane. Worse, that same group has gone on to become the people making this stuff. I'm reminded of John Byrne when he talked about going back to Spider-Man and drew webs under his arms as they had been since Ditko first drew him up. The editor at the time told him they did away with those webs. He then went on to say that they'd explain what happened to them in a few issues. A simple design change that few people noticed needed to be explained in detail. Complete waste of time and energy.

If these guys have their way, we'll soon have a complete story of the evolution of the Ewoks and how Wickett came to possess that hat he wore in Return of the Jedi. I can almost hear certain nerds squealing in delight as they learn the answer of the age-old question: HOW DID WICKETT THE EWOK GET HIS HAT?!?!?!?!

And it would obviously require a trilogy to tell the whole story.

Could be since it's a fairly unknown group of characters lore wise. Visually it looks quite similar but seeing how new it is relatively speaking, imagine most feel that way to a degree.

All the equipment/bad guys should be nostalgic though.

New trailer missing the classic Star Wars music that sold me on the episode 7 trailer, but that music's more Jedi related which this should be.

I believe some of those items are missing on purpose to serve as the division between sequels and anthologies.

Trailer gave me goose bumps. I am excited to see this one. TFA peaked my interest but didn't stir my soul. The end product for TFA was disappointment. I keep holding on to hope and dreaming of a truly compelling cast of characters. The last 4 star wars movies I couldn't care less what ended up happening to the lot of them.

The trailer looks great... the TFA trailer was exciting because it was the return of Star Wars but this one is exciting because it's new Star Wars, no nerds going to wet themselves off seeing a light saber in this trailer or at seeing the old cast return. TFA was a refresher, now that is done, it's time for some new stories with new heroes (and I don't mean those stupid young Han Solo and/or Boba Fett backstory movies).

I was about to say the same thing.

I think they did an excellent job on making this look realistic, probably the lack of Abrams helped with that. I will be disappointed if they use the same hyper compressed universe they did in TFA.

The war movie theme they have going is incredible. I love it.
I hope the re-shoot doesn't destroy the movie.

The "war movie" atmosphere is what they were after from day 1. At least that is how the described it -- being "Private Ryan" like. that is what intrigued me the most -- finally a more "adult" Star Wars movie that is a bit more gritty and dirty than the "fantasy" they spun in all previous movies. I don't think we're going to get over-top war situations, but even what they show right now in the trailers is better than it has been. I realize it's still Disney and they still have LEGOs to sell.

This is my favorite trailer of the new movies. The war movie theme looks like it survived the reshoots. Thing about the reshoots is
1. Gareth Edwards is still a green director. The guy they brought in to help with editing & reshoots is a friend of his who worked on Godzilla with him, and Kathleen Kennedy's (Pres of LucasArts, and producer of many of your favorite 80's movies) husband. He didn't tear apart the movie, just gave a good 2nd draft & final edit.
2. all those actors have several movies lined up & in production. Getting such a big cast all together was always going to be tricky. It looks like there are like >8 core characters going in the Op, meaning they're all going to be in scenes together. That means the preplanned reshoots (ALL big budget movies have reshoots now) are going to be longer than normal movies where most scenes have only a couple main characters in them.
3. If you watch the behind the scenes footage, the sets are very intricate. Rebuilding/setting them up again took a lot longer than your average green screen movie.

I'm very excited. I have a feeling this might be the best star wars movie yet. I doubt half the team makes it out alive...

I know it won't happen, but I wish this movie would show Rebels at their worst, committing acts of terrorism that sometimes kills innocent civilians caught in the crossfire of attacks on Imperials while Vader attempts to hunt them down, seeing the rebels as insurgents disrupting the peace. Let the line between freedom fighting and terrorism become blurred.

But yeah. Won't happen.

One of the new books, Lost Stars, handled the view from the Imperial side quite well. It showed the pain and grief from friends being lost on the DS which helped to drive the two main characters different ways. One was solidified in the Imperial view that they were trying to being peace and order to the galaxy and the other started seeing the bad side and goes Rebel. Despite the book being targeted at teens I thought it was quite good.
