Here's what my Rolex looks like: Explorer not a pic of mine, mine's yellowed quite a bit...

I've only had one person recognize it's a Rolex & he was a big fan of them...

Since I had mine (orig my dad's) refurbed & started wearing it, I've noticed a lot of look alikes.

Only a real fanboy will notice it.

BTW, between the 2, I'd recommend the Rolex, the Omega just looks gaudy compared to it.

.5 seconds every 24 hours?

I would have thought it was possible to make more accurate watches. Heck, my $200 Elgin is that accurate.

I can't take it down to 1000 ft, just 100. Of course I get headaches at the bottom of a 9ft pool, so that's no big deal.

The cheapest quartz watches are more accurate than any mechanical watch by (quartz ~1 second a month, mechanical ~ several seconds a day). It's not so much about accuracy, mechanical watches are "accurate enough" for most uses.

Even a mechanical chronometer (i.e, COSI certified chronometer) can be +3 / - 5 seconds a day. Mechanical watches are subject to position (face up, down , sideways, etc.), vibration, heat / cold .... all can affect accuracy. A chronometer is tested in several positions and tempreture ranges and still must maintain a specified level of accuracy.

What it's about is that mechanical watches are an artform. The craftsmanship and skill to produce a mechanical device that is accurate to a couple parts-per-million and still offer some style. It is amazing.

Personally, I love em. I usually wear a Blancpain Flyback 2100, but I also have a couple Breitlings (one is my "flying watch" and is quartz), a couple Omegas, a B&M, a Rolex DateJust two-tone, a Bell & Ross, a Breguet, a Patek, and some others.

Next on the dock for me is a Jaeger-LeCoultre, a Ulysse Nardin, and a V&C.

If you are just looking for a nice higher-end watch, I'd say go for the Rolex. It's a great watch, it has some recognition, and they are very durable. It is also a certified chronometer. My second choice, given the price range, would be to get the Omega in gold. The price is comparable and it's still a great watch (as good as the Rolex, IMHO). The points offered about service should be taken to heart. Mechanical watches, especially water-resistant watches for diving, need to be serviced by people that know what they are doing. Check your area for people that can competently service the watch.

Nothing looks goofier than some clown wearing a $1000 suit, $300 shoes, $100 Tie ..... and a $20.00 plastic timex. A "nice" watch is a good thing. A couple "Nice" watches is a great thing (and a good investment too).

Good Luck

Scott

My advise is buy the watch that you like the best.

I have the 18k and stainless Rolex that is so popular and I never wear it. I also have a Breitling Super Ocean (pictured earlier in this thread) that I just love. My everyday watch however is a Luminox Ultimate Field Watch with metal band that gets noticed every time I wear it. Even a Jeweler raved about it. Prices on these watches repectively are about 5k for the Rolex, 2k for the Breitling and $400 for the Luminox. I also have several other watches, mostly dive models.

One thing to mention and the reason I bought the Luminox. If you dont wear these mechanical watches almost everyday you have to either buy a winder or set them when you do wear them. A real pain sometimes.

My vote of your 2 - Rolex Submariner. Wish Id have bought one instead of the 18k and stainless Datejust.

EDIT: Laughed out loud at Scotts comment about the Goof with the $20 plastic watch. Happy to know others feel the way that I do about watches and their role in being well dressed.

I'm a watch lover myself, although I'm too poor and young to own anything nearly of this caliber (20 years old ). My uncle owns 3 different Omega watches and 1 Rolex. He says that in his daily life, he always goes with the Omegas, and for higher up ordeals he goes with the 'lex.

Personally, I have and have always owned Seiko watches... they're more expensive then your walmart specials, but you get things you can't find for cheaper... I personally own one of the kinetic auto-relay arctura watches linked to earlier up, but with a silver face. The kinetic feature is nice, even though it happens so seldom I hate bothering with changing batteries. The biggest thing for my was the saphire face, which is the most important thing I think. This makes the face nearly scratch proof, which means I don't need to go through 4 watches a year when I knock it into a door frame or something and mar it up.

I completely understand why people have problems with paying a lot for a watch, but it's something you can use every day for the better part of your life if you buy a quality one.

Hey Beast, you can always sell your TT Datejust and get a SS Sub....might take a beating compared to your original purchase price but still....

I am going to probabily sell my Explorer in a few years for a Sub or GMT...who knows.

I'd go with the Submariner, Rolex is just so much more presentable than an Omega.

hmmm, are you a scuba diver? Are you going to dive in the watch? If not, what's the point?

That said, get the Rolex.

Patek's are awesome but IMHO not good for everyday wear as they are very delicate, service costs are starting at about $1K USD and their cost of entry for the base models are about $8K USD....really only something for the uber wealthy or enthusiast....

I was watching LOTR last week, wife asked what time it was, I had to tell her my $2K watch didn't light up like the kids's $20 Timex's:Q

You watch fanbois, what is the brand of the giant French retro diving watch my jeweler was showing me?

This is very true...

That said, Breguet > Patek

Cheers!

Are you sure it was French and not Italian...if it was Italian then I would say Panerai....not familiar with any French brands...

also while I have a Casio G shock with "indiglo" I always think it is very tacky to "light it up" especially in a theatre....like the legibility but that watch has been relegated to a gym and manual labor piece only.

Shuttle that is such blasphemy.....maybe if you said Lange is better than Patek then fine...but Breguet??...sorry but gotta disagree on that one... that is a nice piece you have though...maybe in that case you are right as Patek doesn't have anything to compare with that...I think Chi McBride has the same Breguet only in all gold...least that is what I remember seeing in Watchtime...also isn't that a Piguet 1185 movement in that bad boy? if so then very nice.

Anyone who knows anything about fine watches knows that functionally there is no difference between Rolex and Omega. If anything, Omega has the superior movement and quality. I was in the same position, trying to decide between a Submariner and Seamaster... After doing tons of research I got an Omega Seamaster, it's a technically better watch than a Submariner and a lot less expensive. With Rolex, you are paying a lot for the name. Which may be fine depending on what you are really looking for.

A big problem with having a Rolex is that there are so many fakes out there that everyone thinks yours is fake, too. I didn't like the idea of having to explain to everyone who asks that no, it's not a fake. I'd rather explain the Omega story if someone asks. Omega's the only watch that's been to the moon, for example.

As soon as I have some spare change I'm buying another Omega, this time a Speedmaster to go with my Seamaster.

I laugh my ass off when I see some dumb Sonofbitch wearing a $2000+ watch that can't keep as accuate time as a 5 cent quartz movement. Why? To impress?

Yep, Italian I couldn't believe how large it was & how proud he was of it:

Nat Geographic about 2/3 of the way down the page.

Mine has some sentimental value, used to belong to my dad, jeweler said they were meant to be worn, not to be left in a jewelery box, was 1/2 way through changing oil in my wife's car before I remembered to take it off yesterday.

After wearing it for a few months, I can understand the attraction, sort of like wearing a new crisp pair of underwear everyday

Some people like nice things. Usually the people who don't understand are poor. How would a very expensive watch from a brand that only watch enthusiasts know impress the average person on the street?

Haha, we both know that only poor people buy receivers. Separate components are sooo much better. However magic wires make everything better. (please note that I am kidding...)
