Yes that is true, but my point still holds with that argument. A used $70,000 car that goes for $50,000 will still be a much much better car capable of doing more things than a used $15,000 car.

You are the perfect example of my entire point. People don't buy these watches because they are "just that much better." They buy them because they want to make themselves fell better and "classier" than the person next to them. I give you props Greg03 for being honest about it.

I think what most people get caught up in is the quality debate - a $10 seiko keeps better time than most Rolexes, but that isn't the point. A rolex is *Jewelry*, a $10 Seiko is not. There are a lot of things that can analogized - cars - do we really need an S class Mercedes? No, but its craftsmanship is superb and it sasy to the world "Hey, I've got money and I'm successful!" Nothing wrong with that, the rich pay most the taxes in the USA so that the poor people can live off welfare. So, go out an buy these Rolexes and keep the welfare flowing to the poor.

If a Rolex is jewelry, then it's UGLY jewelry. Despite the fact that they make some of the ugliest luxury watches in the market, they carry prestige due to it's obscenely proactive marketing.

The quality is legendary for being substandard when compared to other lux watches--as well as OVERPRICED for what they offer.............Yet, they attract the uninformed lemmings due to it's "media" cache.

Rolexes are too numerous nowadays anyways, thus reducing its snob appeal.............Among snobs in the know, they would never, ever buy a Rolex--too common man for them. They would instead buy a Patek Phillippe, Audemars, etc. But here we're talking real refined snobbery folks. Patek Phillippe is just on a different level in terms of snob appeal and performance.

If one wants to really show off at a society event, Patek is the only way to go.

Yet, I still stand by my conviction that a digital watch is all one really needs!

Rolex? I just don't get it

Dan

I like the cut of your jib Dan.

You propose an alternative instead of just whining.

Myself I used to wear a Timex "iroman" which was OK, but I got a Nike Triax 300 as a gift, loved it, and beat the hell out of that for 2 years.

For a watch to survive 2 years on my wrist is quiet an accomplishement.

I got swayed back to the "T" side by the new Timex Ironman "sleek" series. If you you have not checked these out the eletronics are great. Things like 10 alarms, 200 run memory, notes, 10 intervals with syncro timer (for total time in intervals without setting a separate timer), a knob to quickly adjust the settings and so on.

HOWEVER

The "high end" (the one with the most memory/alarms etc) sleek has real quality issues. The band is two different types of plastic which fell apart within 3 months. Unfortunately the band falling apart uncovered a hole in the case, it leaked and died in the bathtub.

Also the interval timer on the ironman sleek series BEEPS for 10 gosh darn seconds. VERY annoying if you are at the gym and slightly annoying when running outside.

Replaced it with a Nike Triax S 27 which my wife picked up for me. At first I was like why did you get me this POS it only has two alarms but then I tried it on and decided I liked it (plus returning gifts from you spouse is bad juju), If I returned it I would probably have gone back to the Triax 300 or one of the newer Triax's BUT the 27 is a good size for me, and I realized I was not using 1/2 the features of the Triax 300 or Ironman sleek. Also the bezel is recessed on the 27 while it is convex on the 300, just a magnet for scratches.

Also tempted by the ironman datalink USB. But, the old datalink software sucked, and the new datalink USB is but ugly and does not function as a USB hard drive.

For a while I was tempted to get one of the nicer looking polar/sunto or Nike HRMs and use that for a watch. However now that I am doing intervals I pay less attention to my heart rate and quite honestly I feel much fitter than whan I would use a HRM to exercise "in the zone".

So what do you wear instead of a Rolex?

let's face it, watches are the only jewelry that guys normally wear. so you aren't buying a watch, you're buying a piece of jewelry. you're buying status.

if it were just about telling time, you'd be like me and buy the Rolex i-control, analog alarm, backlight. totally awesome.

oh, did i say Rolex? i mean't Timex. (laugh here).

(you would also save yourself thousands on the purchase, not to mention the maintenance!)

not like anyone else can tell. well atleast from far away they can't.

You can easily tell whats the differences, the real one...the SECOND hand moves continuously while the fake one stops and goes.

my fake doesn't stop!

My friend's fake stops. He took that one into a jewler and they instantly new it was a knock off. He also took in a fake tag heuer though, and they thought that one was real

Just so you know, there about 4 grades of fake rolexes above all of the "clear back" watches. About $1,300 buys you the best there is.

Ok so what I am missing from this post... What is so hot about a $5K anything? Especially a watch? I have a $90 sundial watch that has a little solar panel in it instead of batteries or kinetic energy and it has not skipped a beat in over 5 years, I wear it everyday and it looks brand new. Link

Yeah, I remember before the quartz movement came out, I needed a Rolex to make sure I caught the Steam Engine Train on time. Of course nowadays, any $1.99 quartz movement watch is superior to the inferior and outdated Rolex mechanical movement. The Swiss just got their butts kicked by the Japanese, just like everyone else. I think even Rolex adopted a quartz movement because the second hand now clicks instead of smoothly rotates.

Now a Rolex is just a status symbol and a waste of time IMHO.

the only thing worse than spending 15k on a new watch is spending 500 on a fake one

Here's an economic thought on this subject:

Why does money exist? Mainly for the exchange of currency for goods, as one's preference for specific goods will vary with respect to another's. Some may want a Rolex, some may want a new computer, some may want to donate the money.

My point is that consumers' preferences for durable goods vary widely. This is fact, why are there two pages of posts slamming each others' preferences? Move on. Buy the rolex if you want it, otherwise use the money for something you WOULD like. We no longer barter, we have money. There's no need to try to align others' preferences with your own anymore

Speaking of fakes, how do you know these Rolex watches at Overstock aren't fake? They're shady operation and have sold fake items before. They got busted for selling fake Microsoft OS. They also sold fake Tiffany Pendant as real thing. I was going to buy my wife couple of Burberry bags until I read about this. Buyer Beware!

My friend paid like $1600 for a Tag and at the time I told him, "sorry, but there's no such thing as a $1600 watch". Now that I see these Rolex prices I have to ask myself what is so magical" about them? Seem like a lot of money for a device to tell the time. Heh, I don't even own a watch. My cell phone keeps perfect time (auto updates) and I don't have to wear some heavy piece of jewelry on my wrist to check the time. I'll stick with that...

Thorsten Veblen - conspicuous consumption. It's a widely known sociological theory...read about it.
