You can easily tell whats the differences, the real one...the SECOND hand moves continuously while the fake one stops and goes.

Not true. Rolex watches also tick off the seconds in a stop and go manner.

my timex ironman sleek just fell apart after a few months.

What a piece of garbage. First the plastic band fell off piece by piece then the 100m water resitant case leeked in the bathtub shorting out the insides.

Now if I had only paid a few more dollars and purchased a quality watch like one of these.

Any piece of jewelery you take to an appraiser will appraise for a ton more than you paid. It's like MSRP on a car, it's a made up amount of money that nobody really pays that much for it.

Then they would be lying now would they. It bad when it gets to your death. Obviously they people aren't stupid to make up a figure. Especially if the decease it bordering whether or not they have to pay any estate taxes. Or even if they do how much.

you think the IRS would be happy if the appraiser appraised jewelry or anything for less than its value. They(IRS) could be losing lots of money. Making up a figure isn't a smart thing to do for the appraiser.

jewelry, collectables and a few other items that can't get a fair market value(home, car, land) have to be appraised. Although most people don't even come close to having to worry about value of their estate.

It's true, jewelry appraisers give a figure worth more than anybody would pay. It's like buying a new $100 video card that has a MSRP of $299.. Nobody would ever pay $299 even if it was brand new but that's the MSRP.

Exactly. It's ticks very fast so it looks like the second hand just sweeps.

But if you want to tell people you have money by wearing a rolex, isn't it just cheaper to say "I have money."?
Since when does everyone that wears a Rolex have money? I wear one (2 tone Datejust w/diamond dial) and I don't have money. It was a gift from my Uncle and ya he does have money. Although he prefers Cartier to Rolex.

Even if I could afford this. I haven't worn a watch for 10years+. Why would someone spend money on such a frivoulus item? There are clocks everywhere.

Why do some people think nothing of spending $100 on a tie or $200 on a pair of shoes? Or why do some people spend $1500 on a computer that will be outdated in a couple of years?

To them it may not be frivolous.

$200 for shoes is not unreasonable given that you spend 8-10 hours in them in day. There's also a huge quality difference between a pair of $200 shoes and a pair of $80 shoes. If you pick a good $200 shoe it will last several times longer than an $80 pair, 10 years or more easily.

I don't really understand needing a $10,000 watch either, but I guess it's just me. To me, there's a big difference between spending as much as a car on a watch or upgrading a computer/buying clothes. For me, it's all about how much I need to do the job of what I need it to do. If an $80 pair of shoes can last me a year, and a $200 pair can last me 10 years, then great. If I need to upgrade my computer to play DOOM III or any new game, then I feel it is justified. I guess that's why I don't get the whole Rolex thing. A Rolex doesn't tell time any better than my Relic, and my Relic is constructed well enough to last, so I don't see the upside in getting a Rolex, other than to "show off my money" if I had any.

If I won the lottery, I still wouldn't get a Rolex, although it also might have to do with the fact that my current Relic is a gift from my parents that won't replace until the Apocalypse.

In my opinion, the only reason Rolex's or Cartier's exist if for rich people (mostly rich people) to show everyone else how rich they are. How would you know if the guy standing next to you was a CEO or something unless he had the bling to show off?

And frankly, I'd be scared to even wear the damn thing. People have been killed on the street for a pair of shoes; an expensive watch screams "Rob me!"

I hear ya. I was afraid to wear it at first but realized how many other companies have copied this watch. The average person would think it's some cheap no name or Seiko at best. I've only had 1 person even notice it was a Rolex.

Did you ask him to buy it from you at his appraised price? Did he agree?

If not, it's an inflated appraisal to make the customer feel good. No appraiser wants to tell a customer he paid too much. Getting an accurate appraisal is not as easy as it should be.

Why do you have to buy a fake Timex for? I had to ask.

Most of you miss the whole point of owning a Rolex. The point is that in just one area of your life you can own arguably the finest, most engineered (you fill in the blank) in the world. In my case it is Rolex watches. Can't afford a vette, a McMansion or a huge boat. But I can afford the Rolexes.

Also, 95% of the people I meet either don't know I'm wearing a Rolex or just think its a good knockoff. Personally, I hope they don't notice the watch. I bought it for me, not for them to see.

I will admit that I have been careful to not wear the Rolexes in certain areas. No sense in tempting anyone to try to steal it.

Also, for those who think such excesses could be better spent on charities and feeding the poor, I agree with you. I personally tithe to my church and have generously supported various charities that are close to my heart. I would encourage all of you to search your heart and do what you can. To whom much has been given, much is expected.

How can you guys compare a watch to a car or a house?????? I brand new spanking nice watch costs $100. It works fine, and does exactly the same thing as a rolex, it just looks different. A nice brand new functional car can be had for $10,000. It's a cheaper car, but it would still work fine, there is a big difference there... Spending $50 on a watch is like buying a ford focus. Spending $100 on a watch is like buying a Maxima or something. Spening $15,000 on a watch is like buying a car for $500,000+!

Why not just buy an expensive knockoff?

if you have the dough those are good deals for a Rolex, sometimes it is not a bad thing to drop some money on yourself, if not that money is just going to end up as more jewelry on your wife or significant other. I only have enough money to afford the titanium Omega. It keeps better time than the Rolex, but I still like the SS Rolex submariner.

Man you guys are missing the point. People pointing out rich people buying rolexes to show that they are rich lol. YOu guys just don't get it. Rich people buy rolexes etc. because they know most people can't afford it. Not to show that they are rich, but to distance themselves from common people. They don't want to wear the same watch that Joe Sixpack can buy. They don't want to drink the same drinks, they don't want to eat at the same restaurants, and they don't want to live in the same neighborhoods.

Yes it is snobbery, but judging from the posts in this thread, can anybody blame them?

I for one have a luminox Navy Sael watch... thing lasted me 3 years b4 the resin band finally (after much abuse) fell off... Cost me $300 but for the sh*t it went through and the quality of the construction It was well worth the money (not to mention the uber-cool trintium (H3) indicators)...

Now I have a Timex Ironman since I'm working out... Things change I guess...

Sad thing is that Rolex's are notorius for losing/gaining time.....mine gains a few seconds every day. They really are overrated as far as watches go.

Breitlings are better value.

Oh - and if you are in the Forbes 400 list - you might want a Patek Philippe - you can get em for the same price as a 911 Carrera.

Rolexes are extremly fine watches, I work at watch repair shop and I am yet to see a Rolex brought in for service. People bring in quite a few Tags, Omegas, Rado, Movado and etc (mostly older, atleast 5-7 years old or older) for service. I myself wear an OMEGA (i paid $600, on $1350 MSRP), because me being a student still does not justify spending over $1000 on a watch yet. Alot of my friends with real jobs, their own places and nice cars all have Rolexes, Cartier, Breitlings, Tags, Panrae and so on...I guess it's fairly normal to spend thousands on a the fine watch at some point of your life

No disrespect to your watch shop but most Rolex wearers won't take their watch to any old repair shop. Most tend to stick with an authorized service center.

I had one, uncle gave it to me for Confirmation in 7th grade. My Mom kept it when I went to live with my Dad.

I guess if you have the money thats fine, My parents have the money but I don't so I'll stick to ones that are under a $1K.
