Xabanak Fanatik told me about the thread, so I had to get on my phone and check it out. That said, I'm not in Oregon, I'm in Texas for tech school for the Air Force. They're slowly turning me Texan (I say y'all now), but Oregon is still home. And I'm originally from the North Bend/Coos Bay area.

HOLY CRAP!
I think I only said the name of my town once in the past year.

How the heck did you know about me?

Anyway I'm not a native, I moved here to take a job at Hynix after I left the Navy.
Born in Philadelphia, grew up in Minneapolis.

I might be considered a native if I ever toss my umbrella and buy some shower shoes (what you people like to call "sandles").

I live on Oregon.

Lake Oswego originally.

Right now I'm temporarily out in the flippen middle of nothing called Condon. Remodeled a home out here. Selling it now. But just told some renters I have in woodburn they have to be out by February. Probably move into there for a bit until I get that place sold. Then moving down to Roseburg I think. So right now just um say Oregon. Because I'll be all over the place for the next few months until I settle down.

I was born in Eugene. Grew up mostly in California. Lived in oregon the last 13 years. The weather sucks arse here. Trying to work my way a little more South now.

I'll be moving to the Portland area for the summer (May - August) for an internship. I was originally going to stay in the Hillsboro area, but recently I've been considering living downtown instead (I'm not going to have a car).

Big mistake to move to Hillsboro if you don't have a car. Even if you do have a car, dealing with traffic on HWY 26 is a burden you don't want.

Downtown is great. Right across the river in close-in SE Portland is nice too.

We have a great mass-transit system. Make sure you pick a location with easy access to Tri-Met (bus), or (preferably) MAX (light-rail). Our roads are bicycle-friendly, but our weather isn't.

Yeah, I'm trying to find a place within walking distance to the MAX line. I would like to live near the Pearl district, but it's a bit expensive. I think I might have found a furnished studio apartment for a reasonable price though, so hopefully that works out.

1-2 weeks before you arrive in Portland, check Craigslist.org at least once a day.

Yeah I've been looking at it pretty often, the problem is I don't want to wait that long to find a place. I'd like to get something settled by the end of Feb hopefully or mid March by the latest, which makes it a bit harder to find something. Hopefully the listings will pick up a bit and I can find something that's not crazy expensive.

Wow.

Cocaine is a hell of a drug. Admit it, you snorted a line just before posting that, didn't you?

Didn't see this thread before, but recently I've become strongly interested in moving to Portland (I'm overseas at the moment though). Below is a cut-and-paste of part of an email i sent to my dad about why I want to go there- anyone care to comment?

"Up til now I've never mentioned anything about Portland- well that's b/c
I didn't know how good it sounded until a few weeks ago. By chance I
came across an article and video on the web about how Portland is
America's most bicycle friendly city (and supposedly the most bike
friendly place in the western hemisphere outside of Amsterdam). As I've
said before, I much prefer living in a city where I can easily get
around anywhere by bike instead of driving across wide distances by car,
which is one of the reasons I came back to Japan in the first place.
This article perked my interest, and after a little more digging I also
found that Portland is America's most vegetarian city, which would be
great and a such a huge relief compared to Japan. It's also a city of
500,000+ with reasonable apartment rental, something I couldn't find in
New York City, which helped push me be back to Tokyo. Those are my top
3 reasons for wanting to move to Portland, but here's the icing on the cake:
- seems to be relatively libertarian/socially liberal as Ron Paul just
got 15% of the primary vote a few weeks ago. Previously Paul's previous
best showing to my knowledge was when got 2nd place at 14% in Nevada
back when there where still a number of Republicans still in the race
-second most eco-friendly city in the world
-mild winters. although it's not generally not as hot as I'd like it to
be throughout the year, mild winters are a plus
-it's not so far from the coast
-OR is supposedly a beautiful place with plenty of nature
-no sales tax (though a relatively high income tax)
-has Sapporo Japan as a sister city, should indicate a chance to
interact with some Japanese people

I got most of my information from these 2 links:

Just what we need, another Paulbot. All kidding aside, yeah, Portland's pretty good. Bike friendly, very good public transportation system, not terribly difficult to find cheap apartments in the city (and certainly in the outskirts), and easy access to a wide variety of natural environments (you're within 2 hours of the ocean, temperate rain forests, mountains or desert). There are way too many vegetarians, which of course means many restaurants cater to that diet, so it's not hard to find food. And, of course, no sales tax, which is brilliant as long as you don't bother thinking about how they're collecting that revenue from other sources.

One that you didn't list; Oregon has the best beverages. Portland is a big coffee drinking city (and not just shitty mass appeal coffee like Starbucks), so there's a large variety of great coffee shops with great roasts. Oregon has more breweries than any other state (or maybe that's just per capita, I'm not sure); regardless, our mayor did proclaim Portland "Beer Town," so if you like good beer, you'll be in heaven. Ditto for wine; Oregon produces the finest Pinot Noir in the world.

I wouldn't get your hopes up too much about the sister city thing though. While there are certainly Japanese people here, it's a very, very white city, and it only gets whiter as you move into the rest of the state (it doesn't help that we don't often see sun, so we're all ghostly pale). Honestly, it's the first I've heard that Sapporo is our sister city. But hey, if you're looking for that interaction, I'm sure you can find it (I've never sought it out so what do I know).
