Wish they would make a Civil War version of this game, that period of history is basically ignored in gaming.

They've already got DLC for preorders... so I guess the plan is to nickel and dime us to death. Whoopee.

Meh, they did DLC factions and expansions with Shogun II and weren't excessive about it. Assuming they keep it to the same scale I don't mind them doing it for Rome.

Possibly because that's very US-Centric and no one outside of the US would care about it. Especially a British development company.

Also total war with guns is just bad. Two lines of men standing in a line is not as interesting as a massive melee.

I dunno. Perhaps it's not as exciting to look at, but it opens up a whole new variety of tactics; and there are always bayonet charges for melee.

The issue with guns in Total War is, outside of Fall of the Samurai, the AI had no idea what to do with them.

I agree that it *could* open up a whole new range of tactics, but it simply doesn't because the AI of the total war games is not up to it. Maybe if they can significantly improve the AI in an upcoming game then some sort of Napoleonic/ US civil war era game could work.

Shogun (I never played fall much) guns were fine because they were just a small mix of the units. Empire it was awful because they were the core of your army and it was just boring as snot. I could only stand playing like 10 turns of Empire (I played Rome a ton and then got a huge pack of all the TW games eventually)... I love grand strategy too so the expanded scope of the strategy in Empire would have been awesome to me... except for the combat totally ruining the game.

With that logic US citizens wouldn't be interested in Rome or Shogun or Medieval..or Empire. I'll keep the dream alive I guess.

Go to a civil war reenactment and you will actually find a lot of people from the UK there. Remember a lot of their family members lived here and were in that war. there is more interest than you think.

My issues with Empire's combat were more shitty AI and glitches.

I remember once I was on a map where I could defend a town. I thought "great, I'll garrison these 3 buildings here and just have a nice defensive line." Well it turns out that, for no apparent reason, I could only garrison one building, and the AI just lined up and came straight at me with no flanking attempts or anything. Not to mention the irreparable fortifications bug.

Empire was a great, but poorly implemented idea. I hope they learned something about gun mechanics from Napoleon and Shogun and make an Empire II some day.

The base game has tons of content on its own. DLC is just extra at that point.

I didn't get any DLC for Shogun and had a heck of a time. I also didn't get the expansion for the original rome and still spent tons of hours on that game.

New video was posted from CA showing some naval warfare. Quite a few people complaining of either the lack of ramming animations or the over the top version of it. Personally I think the actual ramming animation looks fine and the fact the some ships come to a screeching halt with no damage sustained does look a bit weird but can be overlooked.

Won't be canceling the preorder thats for sure. All this video did was make the next 2+ weeks feel a bit longer.

I love the new style of naval combat that focuses more on ramming and boarding. The animations do need some work, though, but that'll probably get patched in later.

This is a great video showing some phalanx gameplay halfway through. The phalanx vs phalanx action they show is particularly nice.

What did you decide on (GPU wise)

Looking at a 7850 maybe. Can't afford a new system for awhile.

GTX 780. Overkill for now because I'm running 1900x1200, but I'm considering getting a higher rez monitor in the near future.

well...nobody could beat sid meier's Gettysburg! at the time, it perfected the art of napoleonic warfare on systems of the time.

Take Command was a indie-led movement that actually made an awesome game with great modding capabilities. It was a History Channel sponsored game that turned out to be bad ass.

The AI is always difficult to do though, as it is in total war games.

However....modding a inherently melee game into a shooting game has always had mixed results.

I miss the old Battle Ground series from Talonsoft.

@Datalink7: That gtx780 should last you a long time. I'm sure you'll get your money's worth out of it.
