Okay, so I'm not crazy, right?
There is a point in the tutorial where you're told to "take your time and upgrade your units before the next battle" or something along those lines before the interface even shows you your treasury. Of course, after clicking and upgrading about 6 or 7 of my infantry, I ran out of the money because I had no idea how much I had and the next step orders me to recruit another general at home to crush some rebels but since I had no money left, I couldn't advance!

TW games are pretty notorious for having a few glitches on launch and I never put any credit in new-at-tw reviewers describing an impatient experience through xbox-tinted glasses but this is getting bloody ridiculous!

Yeah, taserbro, during the prologue I raised one-too many armies so I couldn't recruit a navy because the lack of imperium. I knew there where going to be glitches, but there is some logic missing here.

I also heard people have been experiencing low-res textures in the game which could be my problem. All though I tick off the ignore memory requirements option in the options screen, it does not change much. I will fiddle with it at home and see what I can change in the preference.txt file including the multiplier.

Edit: Someone also said there is a GFX.log file that is generated when it thinks you don't have enough vmemory that you have to delete from your AppData folder in MyDocuments. So if you ran your game originally without the "ignore memory" option selected like I did, you have to manually look for this file to delete it. The file is normally hidden in windows so you have to display all hidden folders is checked in your control panel. I'm actually excited to try this when I get home to see the game in all of its splendor.

First patch comes out this Friday.

It's been a time honored tradition to wait out a TW release and let the first few patches come through before buying.

And I thought SINS was a time sink. This game is going to prevent so many things from getting done.

Didn't anyone notice the battle of Carthage being a lot smaller than what was shown during the E3 demo?

That's what I've been doing. I think I had posted here last year about the same thing. It's best to wait for them to sort out the bugs. I still have Rome Total War install in my PC, which also had many annoying bugs when it was released.

This game is going to be badass. Just watched some trailers to get pumped up for it. Hannibal!! Would like to be able to choose which faction you could play with from the onset as well - alter history, so to speak...

Doh, I just realized I had to just move my army to the port and they will generate transport ships. Unprotected, but at least now I know I don't have to build ships for transporting. Argh.

That is nice. I am enjoying some of the new features that remove some of the boring work out of the game.

It's not clear to me what the benefits of a navy is... Transport ships seem to be plenty good at ramming other ships and boarding them.

I am not clear what the point of navy ships are either. I think they can RAM and destroy the enemy vessels whereas the others RAM and they have a fight but I am not sure if that is always the case or just random.

If someone finds the current food count can you let me know where it is. I don't know what my surplus/deficit is and I still haven't found it. Don't seem to get a happiness from it either so is it largely a broken mechanic or what?!

Transports ships can ram, but they don't do as much damage. Plus, they can't take as much damage. They are also more cumbersome.

Additionally, fleet ships get other advantages, such as firing missile weapons/catapults/etc.

Sparta is more fun than Rome, IMO. Rome is always my favorite faction but in the game it is essentially easy mode. You start at war with the Etruscans who are really weak, so that's three easy territories for you right away. Plus, by taking them out you complete a Region which gives you region bonuses.

Then Italy is pretty easy to defend, with the only land route from the north and limited beach landing locations. And the economy is really good. I quickly got up to making 3k/turn.

Sparta, on the other hand, starts with only 1 territory. And it isn't even the main territory in the region, which severely limits your growth. To actually get an economy up and running, you have to capture Athens, which immediately puts you at war with Macedon as well.

To get a whole Region, you have to go capture Knossos, which means an invasion fleet which is harder to support. Plus the island if Knossos is a big city, so it can sustain a siege for 7 turns. I had to retreat the first time after 3 years as my army was getting too small.

With Sparta, I've got two decent sized armies right now, but am only making about 150/turn. I'm sieging both Knossos and Athens right now, but Macedon is capturing some of my other cities (I took out Epirus earlier) and I can't do anything about it because I have no money until I make those captures. If I can't take out Athens and Knossos, it is game over.

Much more tense game.

I haven't had the technical issues others have, so my enjoyment is higher I suppose. Playing Sparta is fun, I'm currently rolling two armies on Knossos to capture it and unite the Greek States. I was going to roll through Macedon with Athens but I think Tyr or something came through the north and gobbled up their territories after I defeated the Macedon armies. BASTARDS!

They'll be next... a unified Greece will soon be upon them.

Given my current video game backlog, I'm good to wait for the Steam Christmas sale.

I haven't had any issues thus far. Performance is lower than I'd expect, but I think it'll get better over a few patches.

A patch is coming this Friday, they say, followed by target weekly patches after.

The diplomacy is more active than I remember. At first nobody wanted to deal with me, but as my armies grew and I started stomping people around me others around no longer refused trade requests. Instead they started offering them. Then as I pushed into Knossos, the factions around offered trade and then non-aggression pacts to stem any future aggression from me.

Even Knossos started offering me more and more diplomatically to try and stop the siege. First was peace, then peace with money, then they simply offered to become a vassal (wrong term for the era and game) but I refused and just took them over.

I'd not seen that from the previous Rome game and it's nice to see the diplomacy react to how aggressive I'm playing. Now everyone wants to be my friend and trade with me now that they fear my armies!!

I get 140-160 max units on "huge". Is this correct? Kind of small, I thought there would be 200 per unit for inf. It looks like I got 20 units that barely fit the scale of the map they are on. I am also going through cities now and the avg battle lasts 3-6 minutes...I am steam rolling these people. I also noticed there are no archers...I know they're an auxiliary force but I still have no option to recruit them. I thought the limited armies where suppose to help the AI not attack you at the heals with 2-3 units that are doing suicide attacks though it hasn't. The AI simply does not want to create a suitable army to invade you with. Grr. Not happy right now.

Same thing has been happening to me except I've been getting some pretty hefty payment demands in exchange for a trade agreement. I think one was 2000+. I just declared war on them instead.

Yeah. I noticed this issue too. I tried to counter offer by reducing the payment, but they only allow you to reduce the payments in extreme increments. Trying to reduce a 20k asking, would be either 10k or 0 which doesn't help. So what I did was switch the option from a demand from to my own ask, then reduced the payment as a ask, then switch back to a demand. There is some serious overlooked logic here. When you see the developers look over such logic, it can only make you wonder how much effort they put into the AI or any part other part of the game for that matter. For the lack of high detailed textures and poor performance, the prologue that is about as intuitive as staring at a brick wall and waiting for something to happen, the overly complicated UI, and the lack of scale and length of individual battles , I'd say it is safe to say that this game needs some work.

My fanboism is starting to wear off, and now I am getting that sinking feeling that CA really didn't put much effort as they should of into this game. I am fairly confident however that this game will be great after some mod work and patches.

A Creative Assembly game has serious bugs at release? You don't say.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdpIENG0Y2k

Well at least now I know the reason I couldn't get my ships to do what I wanted is because its just broken.

Not seen the units run back and forth like that on land so far, but they don't seem to be very aggressive at all, they largely sit back and wait for you to hit them and then destroy them from the flanks and rear.
