This game looks pretty cool. However, I just dropped $80+ on Dawn of War and Star Wars Battlegrounds. Man...tempting.

Actually, you get overnight shipping for a penny at compusa. I'm still going to wait for CC to get it in stock so I can use my PCGamer coupon.

They both look good, but to me Rome looks better. I'm biased though, I really liked Medieval: Total War and expect Rome to be just as good in terms of gameplay.

I preordered with gamestop and now they say tough that BB is lower because they don't match prices. Looks like my first time with them is now my last.

I've tried Warhammer and it's a solid game. The gameplay reminds me of WarCraft 3, except with a rotatable and zoomable camera, cooler units, lots of upgrades. This might not mean much, but the voice acting and overall atmosphere of the game is very well done.

I still have to try Rome: Total War, which also looks good.

My advice is to download the demos and check em out for yourself.

I haven't played Rome Total War yet, but I have played Dawn of War. I really enjoy DoW to be honest. About as much as I enjoyed Warcraft 3. It is something new and refreshing to play, but will it be as exciting to play down the road? Warcraft 3 kinda lost my interest after a while. Even though I was ranked pretty high on the official ladder at one point. I didn't forsee myself leaving Warcraft 3, and I don't see that for DoW right now either.

Anyway, big thumbs up for DoW.

Haven't played Dawn of War, but I consider the games to be different styles to begin with. I have played Rome:Total War, and I enjoy it alot, however, having beaten it, I'd say it feels a lot like Civ3 did, with the empire building.

Granted, the battles are really fun, but the AI doesn't really challenge too much (at least on medium). After a while, its easier just to autocalculate and move on.

As you approach the late game, you really notice the Civ3 aspect to it, where its mainly city management and desperately trying to keep your outlying cities from revolting. There's supposedly a huge problem with squalor, which is discussed on the official boards. Squalor being something that causes citizens to be unhappy, and really having no direct way of affecting it. Nothing ruins the fun when conquering Egypt and all your border cities in Europe, and Africa revolting the same turn.

Don't get me wrong, its a great game, but unless you go online, I don't think you'll be playing Rome for the tactical battles (which are awesome I might add). It feels alot like high level empire building, ala Civ3. I know for Dawn of War, that is definitely more along the RTS line of gameplay.

I tried the Rome Total War demo... someone told me the full version is much better and actually includes the cinematic sounds the demo omits.

Can someone confirm the demo isn't as good as the actual game?

In the demo i couldnt even play it with 1000 Units, now the full game runs smoothly with 5000 Units

I bought Rome TW and I'm HOOKED. I even bought Battlefront a couple days later, and I haven't even installed it.

This game is absolutely brilliant.
