Both he and Ryan were already clearly identified as threats to every social assistance program the gov't now operates, so when both of them backpedaled on their far right stance concerning gov't programs, it didn't stick. Romney pretty much screwed himself having to brand himself as a staunch defender of an isolationist far right agenda in the primaries and Ryan, well, his abandonment of the middle class, the minorities and the poor in his now infamous budget proposal had him dodging bullets the moment he accepted running mate status.

Bottom line: Romney/Ryan couldn't fool the independents and the undecideds into thinking that the far right ideology each had to carry around like a ball and chain was open to compromise. Both lived and died by the Tea Party sharpened swords they wielded.
