Romney reflects on his loss in call with campaign donors

Mitt Romney told his top donors Wednesday that his loss to President Obama was a disappointing result that neither he or his top aides had expected, but said he believed his team ran a “superb” campaign with “no drama,” and attributed his rival’s victory to “the gifts” the administration had given to blacks, Hispanics and young voters during Obama’s first term.

Obama, Romney argued, had been “very generous” to blacks, Hispanics and young voters. He cited as motivating factors to young voters the administration’s plan for partial forgiveness of college loan interest and the extension of health coverage for students on their parents’ insurance plans well into their 20s. Free contraception coverage under Obama’s healthcare plan, he added, gave an extra incentive to college-aged women to back the president.

Romney argued that the Obama’s health care plan’s promise of coverage “in perpetuity” was “highly motivational” to those voters making $25,000 to $35,000 who might not have been covered, as well as to African American and Hispanic voters. Pivoting to immigration, Romney said the Obama campaign’s efforts to paint him as “anti-immigrant” had been effective and that the administration’s promise to offer what he called “amnesty” to the children of illegal immigrants had helped turn out Hispanic voters in record numbers.

“The President’s campaign,” he said, “focused on giving targeted groups a big gift—so he made a big effort on small things. Those small things, by the way, add up to trillions of dollars.”

Romney said he and his team were discussing how to keep the campaign’s donor group connected—perhaps with annual meetings or a monthly newsletter—“so we can stay informed and have influence on the direction of the party, and perhaps the selection of a future nominee.”

“Which, by the way,” the former candidate added with a chuckle, “will not be me.”

The former Massachusetts governor said he was trying to turn his thoughts to his plans going forward.

“But frankly we’re still so troubled by the past, it’s hard to put together our plans for the future,” he said.

Yeah, right. Romney wanted to give every corporation and wealthy person huge tax breaks and he's bitching about Obama.

Well at least he says he is going to go away now.
I believe he means it cause if he ever shows his face in a campaign again the first thing we will want to know is if he amended his tax return.

I love how these businesspeople, such as Romney, have made it an agenda to cut insurance, pensions, wages, and workers' rights at every turn over the last 40 years and then have the audacity to talk about people taking "gifts".

I find the conservative mindset fascinating. Why are they so worried about change? Something needs to shake up the political spectrum in the US, because the back and forth between the Dems and Reps is getting old.

Have you guys received your gifts yet? I have a tracking number but it still shows processing.

I already sent out a consolation gift to Romney, a box of summers eve, seeing as how he is a douche.

I thought Romney was above that sort of BS. I'm still (fairly) sure he doesn't really believe what he said.

But that was for the real America.

Romney has no public future and he knows it. Had he any shred of integrity left, he would keep his mouth shut.

And for the record, the gift notifications for everyone I've spoken to (mostly engineers in the defense and software industries) must have gone straight to the SPAM folder because no one has received anything yet.

Repubs better do something quick about the changing demographics. Obama won only 39% of whites and still won with ease. That's just crazy.

George Bush won with virtually no black support. As long as the Republicans just ignored blacks, they could get their way. During the 2008 election though, they started they actively denigrated him as a candidate and -- incredibly to me -- doubled down on disrepecting the President of the United States. That did not go un-noted by Latinos and Asians.

As long as the Republicans think that they get to define what is and is not "American", they are going to lose more and more ground.

After all, 53 is greater than 47. As I submit, ole Miitens simply did not make enough believable promises to the 53% when Mitts real base was the top 2%.

Obama won his base by default. Mitt lost because he was a delusion phony

He won by almost 3 million and over 50% of the popular vote in both elections. That's only happened seven times in US history.

Calling it close is wrong.

What, income equality, fair taxation, and progressive leadership not driven by religion? Yeah, sounds horrible. If there is anywhere in the world where the separation of church and state should be upheld it should be in Wash DC.
