I've heard the phrase before and I also remember Kelly and the "an empty barrel" nonsense. At some point common sense should kick in and people realize that not everything that is stupid is racist, and no I don't defend "blatantly racist comments".

How do you know a racist? When the sun has just set and there's a black man in a crowd then someone says "it's getting dark outside".

Reserve ire for things we know are racist, not just what we hope are.
Again, I'll do the same for you. Look up the creation of the dog whistle. Lee Atwater.

I guess its a big coincidence time and time again Republicans keep referring to black people as monkeys and/or animals

Give me a fucking break. Desantis has a history of alt-right racist stuff. You are a moron if you think it *wasn't* racist. The big difference--why the hell should they bother hiding it anymore? GOP supporters aren't shy about it.

Personally I'm glad to see the roaches stay in the sun after you lift their rocks...makes it easier to step on them.

Hopefully it gets black voters and anyone else who gives a shit about racist assholes being the governor out to vote.

I'll do this for you. Don't always attribute to malice that which can be explained by ignorance. That is also valid. I have no idea why this dolt picked this phrase, but it looks like a euphemism for don't fuch Florida up by voting for this guy.

Every single time the Republicans decided to pick the most trivial matter about what Obama might have meant they looked more and more like idiots. Of course "they" were right, just ask "them".

Of all the things that could be focused on the demand that this means something racist is foolish. Like I told the Reps back in the Birther days, stop focusing on what you can't prove and instead inspect policies and propose alternatives that make sense to Americans.

Didn't happen.

I don't want to let my internet friends become Republicans.

Maybe just a poor choice of words but kind of a semi-serious political mistake to make the day after winning the primary considering the opponent. That's the best case here.

Yeah...nothing pegged on my outrage meter. I don't suppose he's even bothering to paper it over with "Well, what I meant to say was 'muck this up', but....Although, he is on the Trump crazy train...

Monkey Up was a very well orchestrated choice of words... In the end it will bite him in the ass.

OK. Show me any evidence of DeSantis ever using this phrase before about a white person, or any other thing for that matter.

Howard Cosell was innocent, because he had a long history of using the phrase about his own grandchildren.

But DeSantis is never on record EVER using this phrase before.

DeSantis is 40 fucking years old. If he doesn't have a sense and/of knowledge of history then he shouldn't be running.

What is your threshold before "accidents" turn to intent? Again, try reading some history to understand the pain behind it.

Closer to 100 than I am 0 and I have never heard this phrase used...

Ever heard the expressions "monkey around" or "muck this up?" I've never heard "monkey this up" before either. Then again, what I have heard is people frequently use variations of common idioms. People in general just do not speak all that precisely.

Except when they are professional politicians, and make their living speaking precisely and persuasively.

Whatever, I thought Desantis was a complete asshole before he said it,and I think the same after. His followers loved him before, and will love him now. This changes nothing.

Why would he be on record? Why is he now? He is not because someone has begged the question. "DeSantis is racist because he used monkey and so because he used the word monkey and that makes him racist". He may have indeed be racist but the standard you are using as factual isn't. How many people have heard Kelly say "an empty barrel makes the most noise" before Waters? Few I believe and so it MUST be racist.

Well no.

I'm not defending him but a standard of reasonableness being thrown out because some feel compelled to do so. If I don't accept that for one side I won't for another.

If people need to use this as prima facie evidence of racism then I can't help them, but they are biased in their analysis. Am I now a racist because I have a rational counterargument you may not agree with?

This whole thing is not evidence for nor is it evidence against.

Now that's something I can agree with. He knows or ought to know that everything he says will be put under a microscope just like any major political figure.

I was waiting for the tag line "because Trump won't let me suck his dick in person" at the end....

I live in FL, and it isn't.

Typical Trump-is-our-God modern GOP politician, he'll probably win.

Personally I find this level of speech to be quite offensive in every way and the GOP shouldn't tolerate it in their ranks. I voted for Graham in the primary but will vote for him in the general election.

It's at least suspicious. "Monkey with" is a common phrase, "Monkey (it) up" is not. "Mess up" or "foul up" are the polite versions of "f--K up."

I've read quite a bit of fiction over the years, from ye olde authors like Twain to modern ones like Dan Brown and I can't recall reading "monkey it up."

I'm also not seeing any uses of it in a quick Google search even jumping to pages 10, 20, ...

But perhaps he's only semi-literate like his covfefe idol Trump, and is inventing his own new version of English?

Yes I have heard monkey around many times and it is usually in reference to how children are acting at the time...

Also heard mess something up usually in reference not making a mistake... So he can recuse himself of conflict here...

But like you I have never heard them used together.

I have heard some very similar variations of common phrases that have been bastardized into adding simian words to common idioms to make them pseudo-racist... Like "chimpout" etc...

So TBH when I heard this today my first thought was passive aggressive racist insult and why didn't he just say not to chimp it up because I honestly think that is what he meant to say after careful consideration of how to phrase it and get away with it... Just imo of course...

Starting to think Gillum might be on the right track here and it could have been intentional to provoke a response. He doesn't seem to be taking the bait.

I looked for myself on google and see the phrase being used a few times in the context of screwing something up. Making a mistake. I'm willing to give him a pass but I'm a middle aged white guy so I don't have a dog in that fight.
