There's a "good chance" of anything when you're guessing at what someone actually meant by what they said. That's because people don't always speak with the utmost clarity, and none of us is telepathic. Which doesn't mean it's a good idea to stoke anger and outrage over a comment whose true meaning was only known to the speaker, but which on the surface could easily have been just an odd variation of an idiom, which is the sort of thing people do all the time. It's important to be cautious in how you interpret remarks like this or, as I said, we end up creating a very stifling and unhealthy environment.

He's been around long enough to know it, but he knows how much that sort of language excites the base. I'd also argue the phrasing is more than just a little strange. Everyone knows of "monkey around" and "throw a monkey wrench into". The latter seems like something that would have came to his mind first of all, but I think he tried the weird phrasing for attention.

If the media is obsessing and providing coverage to one candidate (promotion) over the other, then the response has been provoked and given.

It's a double edged sword. Pumps up the base but can cause problems with other parts of the electorate. The Trump margin here was like 1% so not a whole lotta room for miscalculation if you're going full MAGA.

There is no fucking way this isn't satire.
No, it's not. I live in central FL, this sorry POS licking the ball-sack sweat off Dump aired this thing constantly. His entire platform is literally "hey look!!, I've got Trump's dick in my mouth!". Rick Scott, (the governor who has reached term limits) is now ahead of long time Democrat Bill Nelson by spending a fortune in attack ad's claiming Nelson voted to "slash medicare". Truth is, when Obamacare first rolled out states had the option, (at minimal cost), to add Medicare for low income people, Scott refused to accept this.

I didn't read the thread, but how is this different than when Obama made his lipstick on a pig comment?

I.e. normal phrase used everyday by people.

Context is hard...especially if you have the IQ of a pet rock.

monkeyed; monkeying
transitive verb
: mimic, mock
intransitive verb
: to act in a grotesque or mischievous manner
2a : fool, trifle —often used with around
  • he likes to monkey around with engines
b : tamper —usually used with with
  • don't monkey with the settings

Right, which is exactly why, in spite of the odd variation he used, it's clear enough what he meant. In the example I gave above where my wife said "the ball is in your field" instead of "the ball is in your court," after I called her on it, she said, "oh come on, you know what I meant." And she was right. I knew exactly what she meant.

In this case, if we consider a hypothetical world identical to our own, with the difference that "monkey" had never in the past been used as a slur, I doubt anyone would have called him out simply for using a strange variation of a common idiom, precisely because everyone would know what he meant. Which is why the whole argument that his words were not a known form of idiom isn't a very good one. If instead he had said "don't monkey around and vote for a socialist" that would have been the common idiom but I doubt we'd see a different response.

For me to be convinced that his intent was racist, I'd need to see other examples of racist remarks he's made. Otherwise, I'm not just going to assume it.

Just out of curiosity... does your wife ever tell you to shut the fuck up?

I swear to god US Republicans always come off as either complete fucking morons or mustache twirling comic book villains. It's hilarious.

Getting back on topic, if this was a random one off I would probably give him the benefit of doubt but after googling this dude ehhhh. He attends events with Bannon and that moron that founded the Proud Boys so yeah, he probably said this shit on purpose.

All the time. Which doesn't mean I'm wrong.

I won't be so rude, but just offer a suggestion...

If someone that literally dresses their infant in a MAGA onesie is measuring people's skulls, you don't have argue that he's probably just fitting them for hats. You don't have to carry water for the absolute shittiest people this country has ever produced.

This is one thing many on the left do that drive me crazy. There's enough blatantly racist and prejudiced shit out there without trying to find offense in any little statement. He didn't call Gillum a monkey. Just let it go. Keep the focus on the issues with the republican candidate, who from my understanding is molded in the image of Trump.

Why is calling a person, of any color, a monkey an insult to liberals? I makes no sense at all, unless one remembers what hypocrites Liberals/Democrats are.

I wonder if any of you see this as I do. So, do any of you understand?

Historical claims of 3/5'ths of a person, related to monkeys and the overwhelming usage of the term monkey to describe black people is why it's an insult to EVERYONE.

Are you a teenybopper or something who is completely unaware of this praticise? Or are you just playing stupid because you think that helps?

You want to know how you sound to me when I read your reply?

"Why is dem dere fine white folks who are a bit misled worried about the negroes and us calling them monkeys"

That's it.

Because historical context is a thing. Back to your cave.
