The industry has gone through a couple cycles and Ron came up when producers thought men wanted to see guys like themselves shagging beautiful women. Male stars of the era were more everyman: hairy, sorta greasy, not chiseled or great looking.
That changed over time when producers noticed that men wanted a complete *fantasy* and didn't want to self insert (no pun intended). The women got more hairless and dolled up, the men became more statue-esq, and the hotdogs became Kielbasas. And that's where we're at, 100% over produced fantasy crap (not to suggest the fantasy element wasn't always there, but the vintage stuff definitely has a radically different vibe and look than the current offerings).

What's scary is that there's a horrible history with institutions for the mentally ill, mentally handicapped. They turned into dumping grounds for the destitute. So many shows that look for paranormal happenings go to these historic places that have been abandoned and they go through the records and the amount of people buried at these places is unbelievable, like in the thousands.That's what happens if someone has an illness that may be treated successfully to restore competency. Maybe the hope for success makes no difference at all. They do get to leave when they've served/ been hospitalized for the maximum possible sentence, though. Sickeningly, that wasn't always true. I can't remember the name of the case that established this. Imagine being held in jail for 3 years for a crime with a maximum sentence of 6 months because you're too ill to understand how a court functions.
