I just had a lady come to our door alittle while ago from a roofing installation company saying that our roof had hail damage from a storm this past april. She said that if allowed she would work with us on filing a claim on our homeowners for a replacement roof. Basically we would get a new roof and not be out anything, except a claim. I sent her away without pursuing it any further. From what I could see, I didn't see any visible damage, although I am not a roofer. I like the idea of getting a new roof put on, as I'd like to get a vent put on the top of the roof, and also around the skylights were leaking a bit until I put some tar around them(liked to have it done properly). If I do have some damage I'd like to get it fixed. Anybody have someone come to their door for this type of issue?

call a few roofers and get two or three opinions. file a claim with your insurance company. in some cases, they'll send out their adjusters to validate that you are in need of a new roof. i am getting one soon yay

Total scam. I forgot what they call these people but they are basically gypsy type scam artists. I read an article about them in a newspaper.

Will a roofer charge to get their opinion?

No, people don't just randomly come up to my door telling me my roof has been damaged by frozen water 3 months ago. Sounds like a scam-a-rama.

not around here. most give free estimates. also, the door to door could be a scam. maybe they're checking to see whose home or not before casing the place.

You'd have a tough time passing a re-roof claim by your insurer 3-4 months after the fact. You have a duty to file promptly and they could easily deny on several different reasons and red flag you for closer follow-up on future issues. Not only are the "roofers" trying to scam you but they're trying to involve you in insurance fraud.

She said she was referred by our neighbor who I guess is working with these folks to get a new roof put on. I'll have to check with the neighbors to see.

It didn't so much sound like they were scamming me as they were the insurance company. But if I do have damage, I'd like it taken care of.

If it was a pretty big hailstorm, expect a lot of roofers to come by looking to do estimates. Last year I think 90% of the homes in my parent's development ( 100+ houses ) had their roofs redone because of a nasty hailstorm. Had lots of flyers and roofers stop by with offers to work with insurance and do estimates. They decided to have the roof inspected by insurance and got a check cut for $8k to fix shingle damage and a bunch of crushed vents. Got a few estimates and went with a long time local guy that didn't ask to see what the insurance check was - did a good job too.

Why don't you get up there and look for hail damage. Hail damage will cause spots on the shingles and break the edge or corner of the shingle. Hail dents show up real good on the aluminum vents and vent caps.
Stay away from unsolicited roofers or contractors. Use someone local with years of experience.

Video linkage of roof hail damage and what to look for.

I give any solicitors who show up at my house the boot. (Except for girl scouts/boy scouts.)

If I want or need something, I'm doing research on it ahead of time.
