finished building my storage shed this evening---finally. I've been putting it off for 2 weeks because the only thing I had left to do was put the roof/shingles on---damn what a pain in the ass. I honestly don't see how anyone can do that for a living.

Thank you, that is all.

i shingled a shed once too... wasnt bad, except that being on a pile of tar/rock like things on a roof in hot weather is suck.

Used to make $20-30 an hour roofing in college...it is suck, even with all the requisite air tools and knee pads and whatnot. But the money was good and under the table and they didn't really care if you worked hard as long the job was on schedule...and paided 20-30 minute breaks every three hours in the sun wasn't too bad either.

But I'll keep my current job thank you very much.

Ever see a roofer who knows what he's doing? (There are precious few female roofers, you understand.) The serious ones put the nails in their mouths, spit them out one-by-one and drive them home with a roofing hammer, all in one fluid motion. Air guns can't keep up with them because of their heavy weight and awkward hoses.

I helped my father replace the roof on the garage about 10 years ago. DAMN it was hot. I wanted to kick him in the nuts for deciding to do it in July. We did a good job though, it still looks brand new.

My dad is a roofer. He makes ALOT of cash..and i mean alot...mainly because he spends alot of time on each job so everyone recommends him to their friends. So don't knock roofers, they make alot more money then most of you (Yeah with a lot more labor i must add)

Also...working an entire roofing job is an excellent workout...getting all the tiles or shingles onto the roof is quite a chore.

And good roofing guns only weight about 5lbs...then figure maybe 5 to ten ounds of air hose to deal with...real roofers don't even realize they're holding 15lbs pounds...hell, when I was roofing my nuts weighed 15lbs.

But now, since I have a deskjob for the most part, I'm no longer a true man...I had to stop driving my F3500 dually and wearing wife-beaters.

Alas...my air-conditioned deskjob...thou villian that thou art!!

ROFL... wife-beaters. My boss wears wife-beaters, and the reason is hysterical. He never wants to be stuck in an "emergency" if TP is unavailable. He always has something to wipe with. :disgust:

Something that still amazes me---when we lived in Tucson, AZ, I'd see all these mexican guys out in the 100+ degree heat laying a tile roof---and they would be out there all day. How in the hell can that be humanly possible? I just don't see how they did it.

Drink lots of water...I have relatives in Tuczon...used to rock climb on Mt. Lemon a lot in the summer...I would go through about a gallon of water in 4-5 hours without pissing once.

Yeah, but all the roofers in my area would scramble if INS arrived. However, for them, it is probably the only living that they can make.

I roofed in '81 one summer when I was laid-off, very hard work, good money, hot, dangerous. Had a ladder rung break on me at the top of a two story house just as I was throwing two bundles off my sholder onto the roof, broke through the next rung, but the third stopped me. My legs were shaking so bad took me 5 min. to get back down.

I watched a guy with a hammer absolutely spank a guy with an air gun. It was no contest. He'd been swinging the hammer for almost 25 years, though.

Gotta do my garage in a couple of weeks.
