Roomate is addicted to WoW

Today for example he was supposed to be at work at 10. He didn't make it. He's a good friend of mine but he's in deep debt. We are all university students here and he is just going no place fast.

So I had an idea. I'll kill his internet. I have been taking his MAC address off of the router occasionally and he's been going nuts. Its like a meth addict off the meth.

But lately he's been getting suspicious that its been me cutting him off because we give him crap for playing it all the time. So, we have a Linksys wireless router, is there any way I can take off the port forwarding or something so that he gets internet but the game doesn't work?

This needs to be like an intervention because its getting bad. Anyone with some advice?

Thanks fellas/ladies

Cliff Notes:

Roomate addicted to WoW
Want to take off the port that WoW uses so he still has Internet (port 80)
Is that possible? How?

Imo you shouldn't be messing with him unless he actually hasn't paid you rent.

I agree, some people's desire to avoid confrontation is so ridiculous it's sad. Grow a pair please.

Many times. We've tried motivating him to get his a** to work. He has been going but he needs to work like 80 hours a week and save up because when we go to school in the fall we can't get the cash. All of my other roomates have been working sick ours (like me) to save money for the summer. He just doesn't. He has over 4K on the credit card. His minimum payment is $300. He has an over $200 car payment on a POS KIA etc.

Trust me, we've tried.

He is my best friend. I've talked to his parents a few times. I've sat down with him and told him that he needs to change etc. He is having trouble paying for stuff including the $30.00 internet/cable. This is an act of desperation.

Once we get into school we know he won't be able to post rent if he keeps going in this pace. We are trying to save him from being kicked out and being homeless. I understand your point though.

Create a character in the game and ask him to meet you for a talk Seriously though, talking to him in person would be the best way to ease the tension and resolve matters.

I had the same problem with my roomate (addicted to Quake and CS), and I knew him since I was a kid... Then I got an eviction notice because of he collected rent from me and didn't pay it to the landlord... That was the last straw, I kicked him out... Sad thing is, he still owes me $2500.. I don't think I am ever seeing that money again...

Word of advice, do not loan him any money......

He's just enjoying his college year. After college, he'll be working for the rest of his life. Let him enjoy the last few peaceful years of his life

What is it with that game and all these losers who seem to get addicted to it? I doubt whether there is anything that anyone can do for him, he's going to have to figure it out himself. Sounds like he's dug himself a hole that he won't get out of anytime soon.....

As others have stated, I would have a talk with him again and maybe give him an ultimatum (shape up or you're out). I'm pretty sure WoW uses specific ports that you can block but you'll have to check with the game's technical support page (pretty sure there's a section on how to configure routers... just do the opposite) for the exact port numbers.

A friend of mine got kicked out of school because he spent so much time gaming that he couldn't make a 2.0 GPA. TEN years later, he's finally graduated from college. (Work & college-part time, as opposed to college straigh as he should've done)

I never graduated from High School and look at me now! I live in my parent's house and I get to pay WoW all day and don't have to worry about real life. Life is great

His grades are crap and I know its because of his game playing and lack of motivation.

One of my friends graduated from High School, and a year or two ago started playing WOW. Ever since he started playing the game, he's started having a very wierd sleep schedule (goes to bed around 4am, gets up at around 2 or 3.) He's tried to go to community college a few terms, but always ends up just dropping out after a few weeks. He works around 2-4 hours a day, a few days a week.

My group of friends have repeatedly tried to convince him to stop spending 8+ hours a day on WOW, and do something productive, but after a few years of nagging, we are all starting to give up. His older brother is around 24 and still lives at home, without a job, and also plays WOW all the time.

I don't get how a game could be so addictive.

Me neither. I let myself become addicted to CS:S/DOD:S but it never got in the way of my college work I still managed a 3.3 this last semester which was 'the toughest semester' for my degree's program. i've played plenty of addicted games and just dont understand how people get so addicted especially with something that gets SO repetitive after awhile....*shrug* My vote goes for laying down an ultimatum, either work and pay rent or good bye, and make sure to tell him that.
