this is the worst advice ive ever seen. his friend should be wasting time on saving money for school cost. instead of playing a stupid god damn game like wow. i HATE that game! lol

But lately he's been getting suspicious that its been me cutting him off because we give him crap for playing it all the time. So, we have a Linksys wireless router, is there any way I can take off the port forwarding or something so that he gets internet but the game doesn't work?

This needs to be like an intervention because its getting bad. Anyone with some advice?

Thanks fellas/ladies

Cliff Notes:

Roomate addicted to WoW
Want to take off the port that WoW uses so he still has Internet (port 80)
Is that possible? How?

there isnt a way i know of to block just the port. You can cut his connection like you have before, but i am not sure if you can just block the incomming port. either way, you arent responsible if he doesnt pay his half correct?

I agree, some people's desire to avoid confrontation is so ridiculous it's sad. Grow a pair please.

You can't talk to people like this because they will never think they are doing anything wrong.

That's why he has the ports foward to his computer, or even better, just change the ports that get used.

6881-6999 are starting to be known as "WIDE OPEN HOLES" for lots of people. Custom port FTW.

Until he misses a rent/utility payment, mind your own business. You're not his parent. As he is college-aged, I'm going to go ahead and assume he's an adult. Adults get to make their own decisions. He'll come around, eventually.

I know the draw the game can have on people, I played for 16 months, made 5 level 60s and enjoyed most of my time invested. This isn't just a fragfest solo spilling the seed of onan type game. There is plenty of social interaction. It is basically, ATOT with killing things.

If roommate misses a payment, you have 2 options, 1, kick him to the curb, 2, have him tell you that he won't be playing anymore.

depending on your rotuer you could throttle the speed to his pc, or worse, introduce 1000ms+ of latency....

World of Warcraft ruins lives. I've seen it happen with my own eyes to people around me. Its like an entry drug. People don't know how to balance games and life pick up this game and for a lot of people, and it can become a dangerous addiction. The addiction is real, and you should find a way to help him if he is your best friend.

You can, and should have any way, route BT to another, less obvious port. Most ISP's are throttling that port range becuase of BT

Yeah I can see how games are addictive, was once a victim of SC and CS addiction. Good thing I got out of that quick and lost interest in games (mainly because my main rig blows).

But yeah, I would say talk to the guy. You are all grown-ups, so deal with this issue like one. If he can't get his head out of the gutter, gotta kick him to the curb to give him a wake-up call.

The same thing happened with Everquest... but back in the day, it was with a slightly older crowd - instead of bad grades and missing work, it was causing divorces.

Exactly. I *hate* the losers who blame the game or Blizzard for their or their friend's lack of personal responsibility and self-control.

Okay, here's where I have to chime in with something...

It IS his business and it IS his responsibility. The landlord does NOT give TWO CRAPS about who pays him/her and who is playing what game, if a payment is late, it reflects poorly on ALL the tennants. Unless you have some sort of agreement where the landlord knows who owes what and no one can be kicked out as a result of someone else's shortcomings (which I highly doubt) then you have every reason to be concerned and at a MINIMUM ask him if playing this game is going to affect that situation. You can be subtle about it at first and just "remind" him when rent is due about 8 or 9 days ahead of time, and maybe say "I know you've missed work a bit lately, that's not a problem is it?" and he's probably going to say "no" just to get you off his back, but just ask again a couple of days later. Try and figure out what kind of paycheck he's going to get and if you know he can't make rent, cut his ass off.

You draw the line of giving people a break well before when it affects whether you have a place to live or not.

For all the people who are about to tell me otherwise? Bite me. I've had to cover every penny of a $1350 rent one month (which 75% of I hadn't planned on budgeting for) because my roomates insisted on having new video games, iPods and plenty of beer. They got a talking to from me, and we came to the agreemend where not only did they have to pay me 10% intrest because they wouldn't be able to pay me back for a couple of weeks, that if it ever happened again, I'm not going to be living there next month and they can deal with figuring out how to make rent or find their own places.

$4K on the CC isn't that much is it? I can't see how his min payment is $300, I thought they were closer to 3% which would be around $130 or so.

No doubt his WOW addiction is an issue and he's a lazy azz but maybe you should help him get Student loans or more credit cards, that way he doesn't have to work and you get the bills paid.

Hah are you joking? My idea of 'enjoying college' is definately not 'playing WoW'.

My old roommate got addicted to WoW and it really screwed ****** up for him. He was probably playing 40-50 hours a week, and quit a really good job, so he could take a crappier one with less hours, then after a while he got fired from that job.

After he lost his job he was very flakey about paying rent and bills and one day since I had control over the router, I blocked his MAC address and he went crazy trying to figure out what was going on. Then after that I had to cut the network cable to his computer (we were a wired house) to get him to stop playing.

If you let it, WoW can really get out of hand and take over. If he is playing this much now, its gonna be hard for him to stop when school starts.

Many times. We've tried motivating him to get his a** to work. He has been going but he needs to work like 80 hours a week and save up because when we go to school in the fall we can't get the cash. All of my other roomates have been working sick ours (like me) to save money for the summer. He just doesn't. He has over 4K on the credit card. His minimum payment is $300. He has an over $200 car payment on a POS KIA etc.

Trust me, we've tried.

I've had the same thing at some time - I think I've spent around a month doing mostly nothing. In the end, I've deleted all the games I could find on my computer (even minesweeper, freecell and the rest of the bunch), disconnected the hard drive and closed the case.
I've decided to pass it as I was growing weak from bad eating and lack of sleep - that was the time I've played once a full weekend, with some small pauses for sleep. I don't even remember going to bathroom in all those 50+ hours.
Needless to say, when I've finished, my hands wouldn't have been able to secure a sheet of paper, from trembling and weakness.

It's bad to hear of problems like this - in my case, the problem/game addiction came back several times (and still comes from time to time). Most of the time, I am able to keep it under some control - at least in duration, if not very much in intensity.

Good luck, and I hope you will find a way to turn the tide for your friend

If WoW existed while I was in college, I would've had problems passing. I had text-based WoW and was pretty addicted to that almost every free timeslot I had.

Anyway, I don't think you should mess with his connectivity... that's not going to get him to stop getting the urge to play the game. Withdrawals - for real - worse addiction. You'll have to make him realize he's up sh!t's creek if he doesn't produce cash and he'll have to figure out what he's got to do on his own. He'll have to gradually cut his time down on his own.

The answer to this is obvious. You need to get him a date. Many dates, keep him out on the hunt to get laid. Getting laid is more powerful then WoW. Plus to get laid you find out you need to work and get a good job, so school and job will fall into place. Then you find to get laid you need to look good, so he will exercise, then he will be a good productive (pun intended) member of society.

You seem not to understand - it isn't related to that game only - there are people with addiction to lots and lots of other games (Starcraft, other MMO RPGs, even games that run just on your computer). It might be the fact that no matter how low you are on the society scale of values, in game you are a superhero (or maybe not).
I've heard of someone that was addicted to posting on Internet boards - he posted hundreds messages a day, for the last several years (I've heard of that when he died).

Addictions are not only in the games.
