Need some advice. The tenants are Susan, Steve, and I (bf is freddy)

**The names were altered to protect their identities**

We rent a 3 bedroom apartment, but there are 4 tenants. The female thinks her bf should only pay 10$ a month for utilities since he?s living in her space and her room and he doesn?t technically have his own room/furniture.

We all think its only fair to split the rent ($1200/month) between 3 rooms and this includes water and cable. The other roommate and I gave her the master room (all rooms are ~ equal in size except she has her own bathroom) and we didnt even think it was necessary to charge her more since Steve and I are sharing a bathroom/ and giving her the master suite.

Mind you we haven?t even thrown in cable and water since they are technically part of the $1200 monthly rent.

PS: He is here besides when hes at work... so basically he lives here

What?s your take?

If he lives in her space, and is there as often as she is, isn't that safe to assume that he's using as many utilities as she is and the utility bill for that room should be double the norm?

You pay for the room. 3 rooms therefore all bills split three ways. She wants to share her room, that's cool.

We all definitly agree the rent is split 3 ways since they are sharing a room. I guess what I am saying is I think utilities should be split 4 ways vs 3. Am I wrong?

Put it in her poop chute. That's the best form of payment.

In all honesty, the bills should be split in 4 ways. He's not using up as much space, but he's still using the same gas, electricity, and water as the rest of you. He may save a little bit on heating because they're sharing a room, but that balances out because they have the private bathroom.

Split the bills!

How is it cool when her BF is racking up excess utility bills that they wouldn't have if he didn't mooch there.

Hmm, good point. Well.... split it four ways then. I guess it depends on how much this guy is in the house and using up...

maybe we need to hear both sides' stories, but from they way you put it, 4 ways sounds like the way to go.

Have done and had that happen to me many times. Never made a big fuss about charging the extra person utilities.

Really, you'd save like $10/month and I doubt he adds that much to the electric bill.

Not worth the effort.

Well, well what? This is wrong. If you and your gf's stay over all the time, you are going to be the lame ones (too). Why do people think this is acceptable. I admit, there are diffrent levels here. Does he contribute in any other way? Does he let you guys use his home theatre? Does he vacumn and clean without being asked? Does he cook and share his food with you?

Honestly thats the full picture, not one sided....her main opinion was the fact that he doesnt have his own room furnature, ect...and since all the appliances are already running that hes not going to add much to the cost of living here since he will only really use electric for showers and laundry.

I still think its an extra body and asking a $160 electric bill to be split 4 ways isnt much to ask for him staying here

If he's a bf who just happens to hang out there a lot, keep it 3 ways. Check w/ your lease and find out how long you can have a guest, and then show it to her = win. If he's paying rent or on the lease, split it 4.

This makes absolutely no sense. If he freeloads and lives there rentfree, he shouldn't have to pay anything, but he is responsible and pays rent, he should pay? Score for all the slackers and freeloaders.

If he's there for more than the weekends and sleeps there, then he should pay as much as any other roommate.
If they don't agree and put up a big stink, ditch them and move somewhere else.

Sorry, I edited. Most leases have clauses about guests, and usually the stay is not allowed to exceed 2 weeks at most. IOW, kick the bum out if he is not paying anythin.
