If they don't agree and put up a big stink, ditch them and move somewhere else.

not an option Susan, Steve and I are all tied to a year lease. We had an agreement a few months back (when this was first discussed) and they were all okay with just splitting the utils 4 ways, now she thinks it should be split 3 ways with him contributing ~10$ for his (extra costs in utils).

On a side note, he will definitly be here monday through friday as she goes back home on weekends to work (an hour away from here) and he usually goes with her.

and what makes this harder is the fact we have all been friends for years. I just hope this nickle and diming doesnt take a toll on our friendships as we are all tied to live with each other for atleast another year.

Oh, and I still don't see how he uses less utilities than anyone else. He is there, and therefore he is benefitting when the heat is on or his shower is hot.

but her defense is that its already running for us so why split it more?

Im not trying to be biased, or a penny pincher, or what ever, I just want i guess to see if anyone else agrees with her or me. Steve and I both think it should be split 4 ways.

aghhhhhh its like were a bunch of women attracting drama!

This is simple. Dude doesn't pay rent(so to speak), lives there 5 nights a week, and wants only to pay $10 reimbersement? No way! Have them pay 40% of the rent and split utilities 4 ways. Even that way they're still saving rent-wise, plus they get a private bathroom.

The one concern I'd have would be with electrical/water usage. Extra person means extra laundry and showers, which costs a little bit extra per month. Maybe split electricity/water 4 ways, and everything else 3 ways? As is they're getting one hell of a deal on rent/utilities for both of them, and you and the other roommate aren't making out so bad either. If everything is working out well though, don't rock the boat I'd say, not worth it over a few bucks a month.

Back in college we had 4 people in a 4 bedroom townhouse. We split everything and when our gfs came over more often our bill did not increase so much that we would have to sit down and have a meeting about it. I think the increase was about 5 -10 bucks. But, if only one person is over all the time...i think it is only right they offer to pay and at least do something (wash dishes, clean up the place, cook) for you guys in return.

Tell her that she can pick up the electric bill and you and your other roommate will toss in $10 each since it is already running for her ...

water is 30$ tacked onto rent along with cable which is technically $1144 TOTAL a month

Utilities with my computers, appliances ect... ~160-170 in the summer and ~80-100 in the winter.

Groceries...thats another story, we got into a debate about splitting milk, bread and eggs vs having 4 gallons of milk, 4 loaves of bread and 4 dozen eggs in the fridge each week.

My opionion is thats ~$8 a week total split 4 wyas is 2 bucks, but then there was debate hey you may drink more milk than me yadda yadda......i was like for petes sake its 2$ a week! (we wont get into that)

That sums it up. If he lives there, he should be paying. And if he refuses to do so, he's a POS and you should get the gril booted.

Oh ya .. :camera:

It's called a common area. You're not just renting out the room.
