Roomiest car?

I'll be in the market for a new car soon, and one of the biggest factors in deciding which cars to consider is cabin space--specifically, rear passenger space. Imports versus domestics is not really an issue for me, although I tend to lead toward imports. I will not consider any RWD cars, and AWD is a plus. I also realize that I'm trading off MPG for size, but MPG is always important.

Can any of you gearheads chime in, please?

Well, since you didn't put a price, I'll assume it does not matter. Bentley Continental Flying Spur is probably your best bet.

Me being a smartass aside, we really need to know a price range to be able to offer any information. Although a Volkswagen CC seems to fit your criteria pretty well, and it looks damn good.

You forgot the one of most important requirement: price range.

Without this, you will get all sorts of answers ranging from Mercedes S-class to Hyundai Azera to Toyota Avalon.

Why? The roomiest rear-passanger space cars often have RWD, and many great cars are RWD.

Commuting in winter conditions is just not something I look forward to doing in a RWD car.

No RWD, huh? That limits your options quite a bit if you are looking for interior space. Perhaps an Impala?

That gives you plenty of options. Are you looking for something simple or something more luxurious? New or used? How long will you be keeping the car? Are there any options you would prefer the car to have (or not to have?)

Under 50k will get you just about anything from a brand new Chevrolet Impala to a 2 year old 7-series.

Roomiest sedan FWD/AWD under 50k new, you don't have many options. Here's how I'd rank them for you.

1. Toyota Avalon - Roomy + Decent Power + Good MPG + Decent Price
2. Hyundai Azera - Roomy + Decent Power + Decent MPG + Good Price
3. Buick Lucerne - Roomy + Good Power (if V8) + Ok MPG + Decent Price
4. Kia Amanti - Roomy + Poor Power + Good MPG + Good Price

Lincoln MKS & Taurus AWD - Both are very large cars with impressive interior room.

Cadillac STS AWD

Cadillac DTS FWD

Buick Lucerne FWD

2010 Buick Lacrosse

Toyota Avalon

Acura RL - AWD

If you are interested in SUV's or crossovers - Have a look at the Ford Flex & Lincoln MKT.

My List covers cars from $30K - $50K. Of those I posted I would go have a look at an MKS or Taurus. American Cars Companyies do "big" cars better than their Japanese rivals.

The Toyota Avalon feels like it has the interior of a mini van with only one back seat. Seriously, from the back seat the windshield is like 10 miles away, nearest to the back of the front seat at only 5 miles away.

I hear this line all the time...RWD isn't that bad in the snow. I drove a RWD vehicle for years (and learned on one) in northern MN. Never had an issue. This is FUD.

Used VM Phaeton with AWD, probably not the best choice for reliability, but roomy as hell

I'm not interested in debating the matter, nor comparing driving skills. RWD is just not my preference.

Oooo! Good point. Why not get a minivan and take out the middle seats? Hella room then.

The Sienna even comes in and AWD version. w00t!

OP: I bet there is a specific amount of space that is "enough." You'd do well to figure out how much you actually need and then look at cars that have it. Do you need it for people, animals, or things?

Without knowing more, I think your best bet for "roomiest" probably is the stupid minivan idea.

No minivans. Been there, done that. Besides that's what my wife's Tahoe is for.

This new car will be a daily commuter, but one that can fit three kids in the back should the need arise. Right now, that means room for a car seat for a toddler, a booster seat for a 6-year-old, and room for a 8-year-old (preferrably with shoulder harness and lap belt). Comfortably fitting three adults is also a consideration.

Ah, sounds like you want some width. I have a toddler car seat, an infant car seat, and room for an adult in the back seat of my Volvo XC70, but it's a tight fit for the adult and the two kid seats are jammed against each other.

My Dad has a 2006 or something Toyota Avalon. The rear interior space is magnificent and even has the rear reclining chairs. The car drives relatively well for its segment and gets good gas mileage. The seats are comfortable, the tech options nice, and the interior decent. All that being said, I think it is uglier than cow dung...but you may like it and I can't imagine anyone not liking the rear interior space.

My parents have a Avalon...my wife's parents have a Lucerne. The Avalon "feels" much bigger in the back seat than the Lucerne. I don't know the actual dimensions...but perception is 90% anyway. Just throwing that in there. I've heard the Azera is nice...but have never been in one.
