So I've been trying to get a modestly priced lappy for a while now, and my roommate just offered to sell me his at a price I can afford. He says he's giving me a hell of a deal for $400.

Specs:

Inspiron 8200
Pentium 1.7 M
384 mb ram
video card: dont know
40gb hd
dvd rom/cd-rw
linksys card

everything is in very nice shape, and the screen is nice and bright.

All I know is this model is like 3-4 years old, so I'm trying to figure out if $400 is indeed a steal, and if not, if it is worth it. Also, good laptop?

Thanx.

I don't think they had pentium m 1.7 chips out 3-4 years ago. Or now... I know there's a 1.6 and 1.8 and 2.0.

Maybe you mean pIII 1.7?

Yeah it says mobile... I just figured that meant it was an official "M"

Good deal though? Ok, I think I may finally have a laptop.

if it's 3-4 years it's a p4-m 1.7ghz. Big diff between that and the p-m 1.7 ghz. battery life won't be too hot. but if you don't care, it's a decent lappy for 400. might want to upgrade ram tho. 512mb is ideal for windows.

If you get the system ID you can go on Dells website and pull up the specs for sure.

An OK price but I would not call that a steal considering new Celeron M's can be had for $500-600 these days with a rebate.

Make sure the battery doesn't have any dead cells else skip it.

Yes, it is a p4-m 1.7

He says he replaced the battery a month ago with a bigger-than-original one from Ebay, so I'm not worried about that. And a stick of 256mb ram shouldn't be too expensive either.

I don't have the money up front to get a new celeron laptop, even if I can get rebates later.

Maybe I'll offer him $350.00.

I just sold this same machine for $850 on eBay around December. I'd say it's a great deal. I loved that machine and sometimes I wish I kept it. The only downside is that it doesn't have USB 2.0 and only has a mini firewire. The removeable drive bay is also very handy, as you can have a 2nd hard drive without lugging around a firewire or usb box. It was a workhorse and was faster than many of the desktops and laptops that I still use today.

Pentium-4s and Pentium-4Ms with less than 2 GHz and the slow RAM they used back then absolutely suck.

A Pentium-3 with 1.3 or even 1.0 GHz is a much better deal than 1 P4 1.6, unless you compress videos all day long.

I owned a 8100 with a 1.2 P3, and then upgraded to the 8200 with a P4M 1.6, and I must say, you are wrong. The 8200 was far superior. You got a good deal my friend, I sold mine to my brother for 500 about a year ago, he loves it still and is even able to play HL2 on it, damn that source is a great engine.

So far it works great. I'm using it for internet surfing and school work (Excel & Word), which it handles with ease. And it plays DVD's just fine and dandy as well. I'm more than happy with it.
