Okay. I got an apartment with a roommate. The total rent is $866/month.

My roommate is letting her friend stay with her (long story, )

So.. they (and their friends agreed) felt as though I should continue to pay my
$433, and they should split the original roommates $433.

I said I felt it was unfair.. that I will have to pick up after extra roommate,
and not be able to use the living room, and MY TV and entertainment stuff
because the extra roommate will be using it. I also said the utilities should be
1/3 to each roommate, not me paying half.

Your opinions?

Cliff Notes:
roommate has another person staying in their room, and I feel like now there
is a third person to occupy my living space I should not have to pay as much
as I did before.

Agree with you. Unless those two live in JUST her room, and not interfere with you and not use your equipment and the bathroom (I'm guessing they'll be sharing the bathroom with you).

Tell them that if they use any electricity/heat/water then they will have to chip in 1/3 of the amount. Same goes for your TV and everything else.

If there's a third person there, they should damn well be paying 1/3 rent and utilities. It's not fair to you. If they won't listen to reason, you need to find a new roommate or move out.

Do it by square footage. Divide the common area by total # of people and add that to whatever square footage (pro rata) of the room they habitate. Divide this sum by the total square footage of the apartment and multiply by the rent.

Well duh it has to be split in thirds. Tell your roommate that if they're not going to be sensible about it you'll just report the "Friend" to the landlord.

It's a 2 bed 2.5 bath apt.

They have their own room, and their own bathroom.

I just now got off the phone w/ her, and told her I'll break the damn lease if they expect me to pay 1/2 the utilities. 1/3 or nothing.

Now I need to figure out something fair about the rent.

My argument:
My living room/kitchen/dining area is now being shared with another person and that third persons friends (who are not my friends.. I don't know them)

Her/Their argument:
They are splitting the bedroom and it doesn't affect me

My rebuttle:
It's my ROOMMATES decision to let her move in and I shouldn't have to share ANYTHING.

Yeah, good idea. The "friend" isn't on the lease, so technically she can't live there. Threaten to tell the landlord and/or break the lease. It's not fair to you to have to share your apartment with them if they're not going to pay for anything.

But is 1/3 a fair amount to split it?

I mean, they are sharing a room. I feel like 1/3 is fair, but I can see their side too. If we all had equal rooms then yes.. but they are sharing one.

are the rooms equal size?

is the third roommate living in the living room?

if the rooms are equal size, and they are sharing the one room, then they can split the rent in half, but utilities should be split in thirds. the third roommate would use electricity in the kitchen, right? they use the refridgerator, right? water?

if the third roommate is in the living room, they should pay less than everyone else but everyone else's rent should go down. so you should pay like 325, the other person in a room pay 325, and the living room person pay 216. they are taking up space that could be used in otherways. either way, utilities should be split in thirds - there are three people living there and everyone should pay their share.

Okay she called me back.

She asked if $366 is fair for me to pay, and the extra roommate is $200, with my original roommmate $300.

I am on the lease, as is the original roommate.

the 3rd roommate is a friend of the original roommate who is having b/f problems and is needing a place to stay for awhile.

I agree that the utilities should be split up three ways. Now, as far as the rent goes, if the two girls are sharing a room, then I think the rent situation should be divided differently, but not into thirds. It isn't fair to them to each have to pay a third of the rent and share a room when you pay just as much to have your own room. Maybe you could pay $350 and they could each pay $258. That way you get a break, and they aren't stuck paying as much. On the other hand, if this new girl is sleeping on the couch at night, then definitely split the rent 3 ways.

GL, roommate situations can be very tough. I'm glad I live alone.

I think they should pay a 1/3. They're living there, using your living room/kitchen/etc. as well as utilities. If they don't like it, that's too bad. Why should the friend get a free ride just because they're splitting a room?

I think this is getting pretty close to fair.

Tell her 3 ways or no way she can stay. Yeah she maybe sharing her room "I'm assuming" but the 3rd roomie will have whole house privileges "access to you stuff". Sit them both down and law down the law. Tell them its your place to, your name is on the lease , and you to will be having to adjust your living arangements to work around the 3rd party. If all else fails move your stuff into your room and see how long it takes for them to change thier attitude.

I've had roomies try and pull that sh!t before, and sometimes there is no reasoning with them.

Most people seem to agree w/ me.

Right now she's set on me paying $365. If I had a choice I'd rather pay $433 and NOT have the extra roommate.

I'm going to print this out and let her read it after everyone's done with their opinion
