Root beer fresh from the tap is one of my favorite things.

We go to this place in Michigan that has an original A&W, and they brew their own root beer on site. It's thicker and sweeter than the stuff that comes in 2 liters (it almost has a spice to it), and they serve it in a heavy frosted mug. Then there is this place around Cincinnati (I think it's called The Root beer Stand?) that had freakin' amazing root beer.

That was the blog part of my post, and now the meat of it: My wife says "rut beer", and I say "rOOt beer". Which do you say? ...and if you say "rut", you're as big of a dork as she is

As a kid I used to spend summers in a small town in Michigan and they had an A&W. What's great is you pull up to a speaker box and a girl (sometimes guy) comes out and puts you food on a tray on your window. They had really good swiss mushroom burgers and the rootbeer was the best. The second best was buying it to go in gallon containers (like milk). They were frosty chilled. Even when you buy A&W branded stuff from the supermarket, it does not taste the same!

A/W in glass bottles is pretty close. You can't beat a good A/W rootbeer float, though.

I say "root" kind of like "rit," not quite "rut" but definitely not a crisp, clean "root."

What town, BTW? I'm from a "small Michigan town" myself.

I've got friends from northeast PA and they say things like "rum" instead of room, and "ruff" instead of roof. Damn hicks.
Leave snook alone.

Back on topic, Abita (the brewery famous for purple haze) makes a badass Root Beer. This bar/restaurant pub in my town has it on tap and I asked the bartender about it and she said that it wasn't alcoholic, but it was fucking delicious. Boy was she right. Easily top 3 I've ever had and I come from NE PA where Root Beer and Birch Beer are srsbsns.

Yeah, there was an A&W back at UIUC and it was surprising how good the root beer was from a fast food joint. They never served it in the frosted mug but they left the tap out for self service. Mmmmm... numerous trips to the tap were warranted.

Truth. I used to go to the Kutztown Fair when I was a kid, and man, they had some amazing fresh birch beer at some of the stands. Oh, and you say "rum" too!

No A&W's in Virginia that I have found. And every place that specializes in floats & shakes seems to use cheap plastic bottled root beer.

Meh. Barq's in a can tastes the same as tap, or even better. Maybe I just had a bad xp.

This was at Ray's Hellburger in VA.

I think you were doing it wrong. Our local brewpub brews root beer and ginger beer, and both are incredible.

birch =/= root

They are both made from Birch trees but Birch Beer is a little more bitting and clear where root is made from birch roots and is caramel and creamy.

Root beer was made from sassafras roots (usually now artificially flavored b/c the real sassafras roots are banned by the FDA b/c of suspected carcinogenic qualities).

Birch beer is made from the birch tree, usually the bark.
